i do love the 870 but the $300 pricetag i diddnt like so i got the h&r pardner pump
it rules its strong "a little heavy" and it works so i cant complain and its almost half the price of an 870 about $169 so for a fun gun situation its perfect
@shadysideguy123 He said " you don't need a $3000 AR-15.... what you need is probably get yourself a really good pump shotgun...", he is talking like a gun is a necessity, what I am saying is it is not necessary to have a gun at all
870 is a great choice, although I found a like-new Benelli Nova pump for $250 that's equally sweet. Definitely don't need to spend more than $400 on your entire shotgun setup, though. Save the money for ammo and training!
I LOVE my 870 express super mag. I've had it 11 of my 26 years on earth, and it's simply the single most versatile weapon on the planet. It serves me well for recreation, hunting, and home/neighborhood defense. 1 gun, MANY roles.
If your planning on using that 870 for home defence why wouldnt you buy the tactical? I feel more comftorable defending my home when i have 9 shells in the tube i guess its personal pref.
@GathmanZ71 No offense but if you need 9 shells in a pump, your in trouble that a shotgun probably isn't going to fix... But say skeet shooting at home, oh yeah I gotta love the extended tube.
Good video. I have a Mossberg 500 basic 12 ga. and it's been great. The only reason i chose it over the 870 is because i'm left handed and the safety on the 500 is in a better position for me.
FWIW, I have personally seen a 590 fail after one range session. Extractor broke. Mossbergs have always seemed cheapy to me, an 870 will last and last and last.
The only thing Mossy's have going for them is the loading gate. That is it.
own both an 870 and a mossberg 500 no problems with the mossberg but at one point with the 870 a round would fail to eject out of the magazine tube had to cycle the action abnormally hard a few times to make it work and the problem seemed to rectify itself both good shotguns but the mossberg can be bought for a hundred bucks less
@SturmTrooper666 it may be dufferent where i live but i was lookin at some shotguns the other day and there was both an 870 and a mossberg that i believe was the 500 and the 870 was actually about 100 less...
i've been looking for a nice shotgun for hunting and sport, and i've heard a lot of great reviews about this gun. i have yet to hear a bad word about it. definitely my top choice unless i find something that just feels better in my hands
I use an 870 to deer hunt, but mine's carbon stock. I've never owned a more reliable shotgun in all my life. It's rifle barreled and sighted in at 70 yards and I have never missed a deer with it. If you're looking to buy a shotgun, buy an 870. You can't go wrong with it.
Just bought a 1963 870 wingmaster for $200. Couldn't be happier. It is heavily used but I am very happy with it. I love the nicer wood of the wingmaster. Only thing I've done is cut the barrel down to 18.5 inches.
The 870 is my first gun. I got it mainly because it was cheap, from a good manufacturer and on reviews from the internet and friends. It's dead simple to use and take apart to clean and reliable even after dropping it in a mud puddle. >_< I've never regretted buying it and I'm sure I'll get the Wingmaster version at some point to add to my collection.
I heard the finish of the 870 express is not so good, that it does not work as well as say an 870 Wingmaster. Does anybody have a somewhat new Remington 870 EXPRESS to confirm this?
@ntrudr800 ive had an 870 express magnum for 5 years now and its been in the woods, dropped, and shot an ass load and it looks brand new, you cant go wrong with an 870.
@armenianesh818 because he doesn't own a high powered rifle. The range isn't great, but a shotgun is very diverse. You can hunt anything from turkey to bear.

@TTBlackOPS lol really? i think you over think things, if you hear them racking a shot gun the time it would take you to turn around and shoot them you would already probably be dead
Ill take a mossburg 500 over an 870 express, but I love the wing master, any good pump is great for home defense, you can use a light load and still take out your enemy, and have less chance of the shot going through the wall and hurting or killing a family member, which could be a problem with a rifle,or even a pistol depending on the round.
@pidner dont know man, i got 8 shot Mossberg 500 some time ago, now all i can think of is that why the f*ck didnt i get remington 870.. but yeah answer is price and availability of specific models on this side of the pond..
@thiscouldntblowmore Yeh,its also about when the gun was built,my mossburg is around 20 years old,and as you know older guns are better made than the new stuff, also my 870 wingmaster is 20+ years and if I had to choose between the two it would be the 870 wingmaster all the way.I bought a used benelli nova about a yer ago and in my opinion its junk, made of a plastic like composite, its the heaviest shootgun I have, kicks like hell, they just took more pride in thier workmanship years ago.
l couldn't agree more with your assessment regarding the 870.. l will disagree with Mossberg fans however, simply because l find they tend to cycle poorly.. The 870 cycles like a dream, and l've only had 2 jams in the hundreds of rounds fired..
The NEF (or H&R) Pardner Protector 12 GA pump shotgun,. 18.5 Barrel with black furniture and shoots 2 3/4 & 3" shells for $200!!! Its a Clone of a Rem 870 (all parts except the barrel & accessories for 870 fit it)and it IS reliable and built like a Tank with the REAL STEEL reciever. Check it out for your home defense purchase!
Dude it all depends man. I picked up a very lightly used 870 tactical with a 6+1 capacity with the new RemChoke (highly recommend for versatility and cool factor) for $370 INCLUDING shipping. $450 seems high to me...but if you're looking at a camo finished, Remchoke model with a 20" barrel and maybe rifle sights and a speedfeed stock, now that's a decent price.
@thegangvault2 Just today one of my local sporting stores (Gander Mtn.) had one for 250$. I wound up buying a Mossberg 500 for 170$, which I thought was a really good deal! Thanks for the info though!
Well sounds like you got a great deal. I always tell dudes "just think of all the ammo you could buy with the difference in price!". Shoot man, you could almost get a pistol for that. My brother has the Mossberg 500 and it's been a great gun through hundreds of rounds.
I own a Remington 870, you've gotta love that sound when you rack that shotgun! I've heard nothing but good things about the 870. I love it, never had any problems with it.
I don't care much for the all black synthetic modded-out shotguns unless I was on the offense.
For home defense this here 20" with wood stocks looks beautiful and is just as deadly as any other shotgun. Perfect.
When you have tons of crap all over your gun it starts to look questionable to some people, especially those who are afraid of guns. Just a point. Not true for everyone.
Good point, but I like my shotgun to be as visually intimidating as possible (not that it is yet). That way, if I point it at someone who just broke into my house, they are that much more likely to stick their hands in the air and surrender than try to do something fancy. Just my $0.02
i own a moss 500 need the length of pull adjusted and the rib on the barrel came loose so im thinking just buy another gun i picked up an 870 the other day and it wasnt bulky and heavy like my 500 the salesman talked me out of it though said i wouldnt like the 870 but im thinking i should buy it seems like a cool gun
@zombieturd7 -- You might take a look at the new Stoeger semi auto shotguns.
Stoeger now makes a licensed copy of the Benelli M1-Super 90 you can get them for under $400 or a Benelli Super Nova pump shotgun which is also around $400.
@usarmycaptainamerica i had the benelli nova pump 18in barrel it was a good gun but i sold it cause it weights too much it was alot heavier then the remington or mossberg im gettin a 870 next
Just bought an 870 (the new tactical one with the choke) and I gotta say it's awesome. Lightweight and fast handling! The stock absorbs recoil fairly well too. The choke option def increases versatility. Shot a bunch of birdshot, #4 buck, and slugs through it over the weekend and although the shoulder was a bit sore monday it wasn't bad. SWEET gun. Highly recommend!
@thegangvault2 already bought it fired a dozen rounds through but Im still trying to get used to the way pump shotguns feel I much pefer sxs shotguns its still a cool gun
remington 870 vs mossberg 500-590 both great guns 870's are alot easier to feild strip and can have more mods how ever 590's are excellent in military combat with the nice metal trigger guard but with a knoxx the saftey is in a bad position i like the 870's better goin with mr smith i am just an 870 kind of guy but i will not turn down a good offer on an 500-590
clint smith is the man. cuts through all the bullshit, and tells it like it is. whereas gun rag writers are pushing the newest tacticool mall ninja shit.
@usernametroubles seriously, i see at least a dozen guys at the range out of 40 peeps witch bitched out ARs, tacticshit lights and lasers. Do you need all that crap on there??? a single led light set up cost more than this 870.
@Jnarte1 I couldn't agree more. They say it's not the weapon that makes the shooter, it's the shooter who makes the weapon. I own and am in love with my two Remington 870's. I think they're the greatest shotguns on Earth. My best friend, diehard Mossberg fan. But that's what works best for him. IN the end, it's what you're comfortable with and what you've trained with, and are profficient with. My favs: Remington and Springfield. His favs: Mossberg and Beretta. All great guns. "To each his own".
@Jnarte1 SO true! I tell people that same thing. Is a 1911 or Glock better? Neither, but which do you shoot better? Same goes for shotguns. Are there crap guns out there, sure, but honestly I have a Mossberg 500, it has an unprotected red dot as I do a lot of tactical shoots, but otherwise it's simple yet tactical, and I like it.
Glad to see someone reply with the same mindset as myself.
Uncle Jesse's old double barrel 12 served HIM well for home protection.
I use a .303 British...THAT used to be a Canadian Forces rifle during two world wars and Korea.....303 makes for a good hunting rifle....You think so NorseAztec???
yeah no problem, if you arent going to buy for home defense, i would go with the field barrel with the vented rib, that way you can change out chokes and all that for hunting right?
What is the performance drop on a 20" barrel as opposed to a 26"? I don't intend to do serious clay shooting, so if I had a 20" barrel with a choke, would that work fine?
not lame, understandable. from there it is just preference in my opinion, i dont really have much experience with clays but i would still probably go witht he 26 or 28 inch barrels...and im not sure if i know of any 20 inch barrels with chokes, but im tired and am not thinking hard enough haha, good luck buddy any more questions just ask.
yes the safety is in a much metter spot than the 500, but when you go to load the 870 you can get your finger caught in it, i cant remember what its called but its like a elevator that you push away with the shell. but ether one would be a great choice.
01: Check into the H&R protector (pardner) it is an exact copy of the 870, excellent warranty, solid steel receiver, steel trigger guard, dbl feed (feeds anything) under 190.00 and best bang for the buck. Rock solid. You might consider.
I have a Remington 870 best part it's got no kick at all.and yet it could blow right throw a car door and i only have the one that uses buck shots a slug would break my gun or backfire but still it's pretty bad ass.and if someone thinks of rubbing my house wish happend onece i just cock it back and that's enough to scare the shit out of anybody and if they were armed i almost fell bad for them.
I built an 870 from parts I found in a box at the gun shop I used to work at. Ramline black synthetic stock and forend, a 26" IC bbl with a 10 shot mag extension. It stays loaded with 2 3/4" Mag #1 buckshot. I call it "The Black Bastard". :-D
i went to go buy an 870 but that had a benelli supernova right next to it. i got the benelli and love it. not knocking the 870 at all my dad has one great gun.
I still use my 870 20 gauge I got when i was 13 years old. Great gun I've had it for fifteen years and have killed tons of deer with it. I have a 12 gauge 870 I use for bird hunting also awesome gun! Now I wanna save up for a 870 wingmaster they are just perfect, simple shotguns atleast to me.
Dang it, now I'm conflicted. I am interested in an AK variant, but I also love shotguns! The one I have now isn't really prime for home defense, on account of its long barrel. I can't afford both at once. Guess that's the problem with guns today: there are too many good choices!
Good video sir. I have a Mossberg now with 20 inch barrel and 8 round capacity. However I'm getting a new job soon and REALLY want to get an 870. What I was wondering is what exact model is that? I love the look. I dont want more than say a 22" barrel and a wood stock.
One of the best things about 870s is the simplicity of the weapon. I have a 26" barrel 870 that I use for duck and turkey. One of the best shotguns ever made.
i have that exact remmington 870. its amazing i use it for turkey and deer hunting. i got 3 turkeys and a 6 point under is so far. very reliable and simple to use cant go wrong with a 870. and im only 16
Mr. Smith is right. I just traded my FHN Police Shotgun in for a 870. It is easy to get parts and accessories there are so many out there and they are proven! 870 is the standard!! The 870 is used by more military units and police units than any other guns. FHN Slide release "button" sucks at best
100% agree absolutely love my 870. I throw on the 26in. barrel and hit the trap range, come home throw on the 18in. barrel and its ready to protect my home. ...haha i love how fast he speaks

@thiscouldntblowmore Yeh,its also about when the gun was built,my mossburg is around 20 years old,and as you know older guns are better made than the new stuff, also my 870 wingmaster is 20+ years and if I had to choose between the two it would be the 870 wingmaster all the way.I bought a used benelli nova about a yer ago and in my opinion its junk, made of a plastic like composite, its the heaviest shootgun I have, kicks like hell, they just took more pride in thier workmanship years ago.
pidner 1 year ago
@pidner But I understand about getting the best you can thats available for your hard earned money.

Right on. The gun go click, the gun go bang. Love my 870.

Should I buy the regular standard 870 that just holds 5 rounds or get one that holds 7? This is for home defense.

l couldn't agree more with your assessment regarding the 870.. l will disagree with Mossberg fans however, simply because l find they tend to cycle poorly.. The 870 cycles like a dream, and l've only had 2 jams in the hundreds of rounds fired..

Take a look at what I just bought:
The NEF (or H&R) Pardner Protector 12 GA pump shotgun,. 18.5 Barrel with black furniture and shoots 2 3/4 & 3" shells for $200!!! Its a Clone of a Rem 870 (all parts except the barrel & accessories for 870 fit it)and it IS reliable and built like a Tank with the REAL STEEL reciever. Check it out for your home defense purchase!

My dad said he might get a little revolver for home defense. I think i'll get him the 870 for his birthday next month.

I looked at a used 870 for 450$. To anybody out there is this too much? What is a decent price for these models?
partymariner 1 year ago
@partymariner
Dude it all depends man. I picked up a very lightly used 870 tactical with a 6+1 capacity with the new RemChoke (highly recommend for versatility and cool factor) for $370 INCLUDING shipping. $450 seems high to me...but if you're looking at a camo finished, Remchoke model with a 20" barrel and maybe rifle sights and a speedfeed stock, now that's a decent price.
thegangvault2 1 year ago
@thegangvault2 Just today one of my local sporting stores (Gander Mtn.) had one for 250$. I wound up buying a Mossberg 500 for 170$, which I thought was a really good deal! Thanks for the info though!
partymariner 1 year ago
@partymariner
Well sounds like you got a great deal. I always tell dudes "just think of all the ammo you could buy with the difference in price!". Shoot man, you could almost get a pistol for that. My brother has the Mossberg 500 and it's been a great gun through hundreds of rounds.

Wish we had home defence in the UK!! I'd take great pleasure in blowing someone's head off who dared breach my security.

I own a Remington 870, you've gotta love that sound when you rack that shotgun! I've heard nothing but good things about the 870. I love it, never had any problems with it.
leroy592 1 year ago
Hey, zombieturd7, don't hesitate on the 870. I haven't shot one, but I've heard nothing but great reviews. I am getting one very soon :) :) :)
Check out 'The Home Defense Shotgun' article by Wylie Clapp on Guns and Ammo website. The 870 is most recommended for bang per buck.
Screw the salesman, did you see Clint rack that slide? Sounded beautiful, man. Haha
ntrudr800 1 year ago
I don't care much for the all black synthetic modded-out shotguns unless I was on the offense.
For home defense this here 20" with wood stocks looks beautiful and is just as deadly as any other shotgun. Perfect.
When you have tons of crap all over your gun it starts to look questionable to some people, especially those who are afraid of guns. Just a point. Not true for everyone.
ntrudr800 1 year ago
@ntrudr800
Good point, but I like my shotgun to be as visually intimidating as possible (not that it is yet). That way, if I point it at someone who just broke into my house, they are that much more likely to stick their hands in the air and surrender than try to do something fancy. Just my $0.02
thegangvault2 1 year ago
see, you don't have to be able to launch the space shuttle with your gun.
just a simple shot gun will protect your home just as well as buck rogers' ray gun!

i own a moss 500 need the length of pull adjusted and the rib on the barrel came loose so im thinking just buy another gun i picked up an 870 the other day and it wasnt bulky and heavy like my 500 the salesman talked me out of it though said i wouldnt like the 870 but im thinking i should buy it seems like a cool gun
zombieturd7 1 year ago
@zombieturd7 -- You might take a look at the new Stoeger semi auto shotguns.
Stoeger now makes a licensed copy of the Benelli M1-Super 90 you can get them for under $400 or a Benelli Super Nova pump shotgun which is also around $400.

@usarmycaptainamerica i had the benelli nova pump 18in barrel it was a good gun but i sold it cause it weights too much it was alot heavier then the remington or mossberg im gettin a 870 next

@zombieturd7
SWEET gun. Highly recommend!
thegangvault2 1 year ago
@thegangvault2 already bought it fired a dozen rounds through but Im still trying to get used to the way pump shotguns feel I much pefer sxs shotguns its still a cool gun

@zombieturd7 i totolay agree sxs shotguns are the best!! my first shotgun was a 12ga coach gun but the 870 is still a good gun

remington 870 vs mossberg 500-590 both great guns 870's are alot easier to feild strip and can have more mods how ever 590's are excellent in military combat with the nice metal trigger guard but with a knoxx the saftey is in a bad position i like the 870's better goin with mr smith i am just an 870 kind of guy but i will not turn down a good offer on an 500-590

@usernametroubles seriously, i see at least a dozen guys at the range out of 40 peeps witch bitched out ARs, tacticshit lights and lasers. Do you need all that crap on there??? a single led light set up cost more than this 870.
kryptoniterxn117 1 year ago
@usernametroubles YES. I was telling my work friends that they didn't need all the extra crap, that a larger mag tube is nice but not needed.
ntrudr800 1 year ago
Here in the U.S., we use the Remington 870 for hunting, home defense, law enforcement/military applications, and sport.
To argue which is better (Remington 870 v. Mossberg 590, etc.) is moot. It's not what's better; it's what's better for YOU... ;-)
Jnarte1 2 years ago 44
i own the 870 express 12 gauge and the mossberg 20 gauge . them bolth ar good ,,,
adcomamps 2 years ago 2
@Jnarte1 I couldn't agree more. They say it's not the weapon that makes the shooter, it's the shooter who makes the weapon. I own and am in love with my two Remington 870's. I think they're the greatest shotguns on Earth. My best friend, diehard Mossberg fan. But that's what works best for him. IN the end, it's what you're comfortable with and what you've trained with, and are profficient with. My favs: Remington and Springfield. His favs: Mossberg and Beretta. All great guns. "To each his own".
centurion205 1 year ago
@Jnarte1 SO true! I tell people that same thing. Is a 1911 or Glock better? Neither, but which do you shoot better? Same goes for shotguns. Are there crap guns out there, sure, but honestly I have a Mossberg 500, it has an unprotected red dot as I do a lot of tactical shoots, but otherwise it's simple yet tactical, and I like it.
Glad to see someone reply with the same mindset as myself.
Happy and Safe Shooting!

the safety locations
Yotehunter93 2 years ago 3
Thanks for the reply.
I like the look of a 20" barrel on a shotgun, but If I am not going to be using it for home defense would it be much better to get a field barrel?
O1toolsteel 2 years ago
yeah no problem, if you arent going to buy for home defense, i would go with the field barrel with the vented rib, that way you can change out chokes and all that for hunting right?
Yotehunter93 2 years ago
What is the performance drop on a 20" barrel as opposed to a 26"? I don't intend to do serious clay shooting, so if I had a 20" barrel with a choke, would that work fine?
Sorry for all the lame questions.
O1toolsteel 2 years ago
not lame, understandable. from there it is just preference in my opinion, i dont really have much experience with clays but i would still probably go witht he 26 or 28 inch barrels...and im not sure if i know of any 20 inch barrels with chokes, but im tired and am not thinking hard enough haha, good luck buddy any more questions just ask.
Yotehunter93 2 years ago
yes the safety is in a much metter spot than the 500, but when you go to load the 870 you can get your finger caught in it, i cant remember what its called but its like a elevator that you push away with the shell. but ether one would be a great choice.
my3406cat 2 years ago
if you gonna put a pistol grip on it then i would go with the 870. The mossberg's safety is hard to access with a pistol grip.
jerryficus 2 years ago
Not really. it's mostly a preference. I have owned both and there was no difference between the 2 that I saw.
deworeg 2 years ago
01: Check into the H&R protector (pardner) it is an exact copy of the 870, excellent warranty, solid steel receiver, steel trigger guard, dbl feed (feeds anything) under 190.00 and best bang for the buck. Rock solid. You might consider.

I have a Remington 870 best part it's got no kick at all.and yet it could blow right throw a car door and i only have the one that uses buck shots a slug would break my gun or backfire but still it's pretty bad ass.and if someone thinks of rubbing my house wish happend onece i just cock it back and that's enough to scare the shit out of anybody and if they were armed i almost fell bad for them.
chosenbabyfrom1980 2 years ago
I built an 870 from parts I found in a box at the gun shop I used to work at. Ramline black synthetic stock and forend, a 26" IC bbl with a 10 shot mag extension. It stays loaded with 2 3/4" Mag #1 buckshot. I call it "The Black Bastard". :-D

It's amusing that modern bowling balls are actually quite deceptively complicated. :D
Always so modest, Mr Smith.
ALAPINO 2 years ago 5
Keep it simple and there's less things to go wrong. It's always been more about trusting your gear and getting trigger time, rather than cool gagets.
trust me on this-
erickallen102 2 years ago
Absolutely. I always hear about how reliable the AK series are. They don't have anything, compared to a pump-action, or a manual-bolt rifle.
maniamme2 2 years ago
870 to me with a wooden stock and stuff is pretty much reminds me of what the sheriffs use in the tv shows lol
shadowhunter388 2 years ago
Dang it, now I'm conflicted. I am interested in an AK variant, but I also love shotguns! The one I have now isn't really prime for home defense, on account of its long barrel. I can't afford both at once. Guess that's the problem with guns today: there are too many good choices!
CrystalHunter1989 2 years ago
I would just buy the short barrel for it, and save the change for the AK or whatever else.
terahybrid 2 years ago
Good video sir. I have a Mossberg now with 20 inch barrel and 8 round capacity. However I'm getting a new job soon and REALLY want to get an 870. What I was wondering is what exact model is that? I love the look. I dont want more than say a 22" barrel and a wood stock.

Mr. Smith is right. I just traded my FHN Police Shotgun in for a 870. It is easy to get parts and accessories there are so many out there and they are proven! 870 is the standard!! The 870 is used by more military units and police units than any other guns. FHN Slide release "button" sucks at best
