The idea is to keep the market stable since oil is the one thing everyone relies upon. After US intervention, German troops had to withdraw from the conquered western USSR. to defend the Germany's western borders. Stalin asked Franklin D. Roosevelt to leave Berlin to the Soviets, he did.
Cold War was fought with technology, ideology, and economy - the US won.

I honestly doubt that Russia or China would go to war with America, however, i do see a civil war here in the US, and i will bet that Russia or China will either A) try and support the Rebels or whoever by supplying them and/or sending troops to help out or unlikely B) try and take advantage of the situation by invading through alaska, san franscisco, and Seattle; then annex canada and move their way eastward
