Just hearing the command to start engines, the sights, the sounds, takes me back to an amazing time in indycar racing...which makes it that much more of a travesty that it was destroyed and would not ever be the same. as mentioned by fleshwoundNPG the variety of cars, drivers, engines, storylines it truly was a spectacle of racing at indy thru the mid 90's and again a travesty all of this came crashing down and ended by tony george.
I think they need to get rid of the 11 rows of 3 they never seem to end up that way at the start hell during a reg indy car race they cant seem to start two buy two whats the use of haveing two buy if they just go sing file buy the start finsh line ..........
If you pause at :17 I'm almost positive that's a shot of Stan Fox in his car minutes before his horrible crash...and they did highlight him a few minutes later on TV as an "underdog"...despite the fact that Hemelgarn won the race the next year. It's just kinda sobering to see.
@fleshwoundNPG Well, tell you what he was thinking. 2 thing: first, the 500 was under the rule of USAC and not CART. This explain the little Mercedes winning the race in 1994 ;) Technicaly, this was not really over but they was a peaceful agreement, which was stupid (79-80 problem still there).
2nd: smaller team had problems in the early 90's; cart was dominated by Penske, Patrick racing and Newman Hass... His series was to be a cheap solution.
I guess he did not expect the present situation ;)
"100 years ago, America's first Automobile race. The spectators followed the two racing cars on foot. Today, 33 drivers will power their speeds of 240 MPH in front of 1/2 a million people. A new face and name will be added to the old silver cup" -Paul Page-
Chip didn't blatantly lie; he, just like Roger Penske, Bobby Rahal, Derrick Walker, and the rest of the CART IndyCar fraternity, planned to make their annual trip to Indy (which was never SANCTIONED by CART). But later they essentially got uninvited when Tony George foolishly set up the 25/8 rule, which guaranteed the Top 25 in IRL points a spot in the race REGARDLESS of time trial result. This left only 8 spots open for CART teams, who would have been more competitive but still fail to qualify.
Thank you so much for posting this, i have been watching the indy 500 ever since i was 5 years old in 1992 i have a tape of every 500 since then, unfortunately i dont have the 1995 indy 500 and it was a great race. i remember i got in trouble in school shortly after the 1995 indy 500 and my mom broke the tape lol. but this is great to finally watch this one after so long.
I felt this was the last great Indy 500 ever ran...............yet arguably the most controversial. It was all downhill after this running. BTW: Gomer Pyle is gay......lmfao!
All of the Menard cars had it that year. I also wonder if the Pagan and Hemelgarn cars had the logo too because they competed in the League in '96. Maybe it was small promotion.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I never got to see the 1995 500....
"100 years ago, America's first automobile race... The spectators followed the race on foot. Today 33 drivers will power their machines at speeds of 240 MPH, in front of 1/2 a million people. Whose name will be added to the old silver cup?"
Its funny how they said all this. But then again this was really before the screwy stuff with the split happened. At that time the IRL just ment more cars at Indy.
Yeah Stan was a nice guy. I got to meet him in 99 or 2000 and got his autograph. Unfortunatly he was killed just a few months later in an auto acccident
Perhaps he was mentioning all three Menards drivers; "A former winner (Luyendyk), a veteran (Brayton), and the third Menard car, Buddy Lazier."
To luy90, in a snippet of the 1995 starting lineup video (separate frmo this) Emerson Fittipaldi (who DNQed) said he would be back next year, too. Of course that was before the 25/8 rule was announced, subsequently inspiring the rival U.S. 500.

its funny the way this race started for Robby Gordon, to think if it didn't happen he likely could have won

The very last IndyCar real battle at Indy500 with great drivers, chassis and engines! Incredible season!

who in row 8 had won the indy 500?
Lazier did not win until 1996 and I do not remember either Salazar or Boesel winning it

Some of the best looking racecars ever....the mid-1990's IndyCars. Lolas, Reynards, etc.
Some of the best sounding racecars ever...the Cosworths, Chevys, Merc-Benz, those Menard/Buick V6s, all with turbos.
...as much as I preferred the IRL over CART with the American talent and the 500 race, WTF was Tony thinking?
At least he's gone. And yes, the IRL really IS CART 2.0, but weaker and diluted.
Let's hope the 2012 IRL rule changes recreate the glory....

ok, ive followed AOWR for years, and im sure this sounds like kind of a newbie question, but are Davy and PJ jones related?
djbadlt 2 years ago
Nope, just a common last name! P.J. is the son of the great Parnelli Jones.
Just like Jeff and Robby Gordon are unrelated.

Those Reynards and Lolas. Beautiful machines....and the fastest ever.
Ditch the Dallaras. Bring these back with 21st century safety innovations.
And that turbo V8 sound. Even the turbo Buick/Menard V6s sounded awesome.

A.J. Foyt's cars may have had that decal, as well. They at least had a USAC logo, showing showing that they would in fact bolt CART.

$143K for 33rd? Last place at Daytona got less than 40K, and only the first 3 finishers got more than 143K!
