John Cook, the EMT, was not only off duty, he was out of his jurisdiction. This incident occurred just north of the Idaho/Utah border and Mr. Cook was (and still is) an EMT in Ada County (Boise) Idaho, over 250 miles away. He and his wife were caravaning with his brother and sister-in-law back to Boise from Salt Lake City, UT.
The police who got shoot was NOT off duty einstein!! If he was off duty why did he drive his policecar, were his uniform and gear?? And he tried too report in that he was shoot, but the radioshaddow their made it very unclear to hear!! and they didn´t have the same system ass today!!!
mxchan: ya sure... they had cell phones back then! We all had them back in the 80s and early 90s and all used the Intenet too, had flat screens and mobile computers etc.... i think they should have called robocop and have him fly in with a space ship. Wonder why they didn't do that?
To these people who say: "How could she cry, she was a Deputy and so was he. She must've known the dangers!" Well, Shut your mouths, you waste of space. IT is still devistating to lose a family member, danger or no danger. I'd cry if I lost my wife to a gunshot. I'm so glad he made it through, and even with these disABILITIES he still continues life. Well done mate!
Do you know what kind of pain you are in when you get to the point that you say you just want to die? Excruciating pain. Not many people can say they know what that is really like. To want to die because the pain is unbearable.
Todays cell phones only transmit 1/3 of a watt, so in a place like this it would be use less if you had one of those old bag phones on VHF then it might do you some good, bag phones generally transmit 3 watts or in a place like this ham radio or any kind of radio service.
um, i'm pretty sure that even though she knew the risks her husband faced every day, she still had the right to cry when she found out her husband was shot. You can't really separate your emotions when something like that happens. I'm married to a cop, knowing fully what may happen to him each day, but I'd still be devestated if I lost him.
The officer's wife should've realized her husband assumed this risk by wearing that badge. As she's an officer herself, a sheriff's deputy she should've known the risks better than anyone else. Risk is part of the game if you wear the uniform. So I don't see where she had license to cry like she did. She knew what she was in for marrying a cop, not to mention herself being one.
Wow, God sure was looking after that man and his family. It sounded like that was a really remote area, and to have a family drive by was lucky, but then to have an off Duty EMT, was just a miracle! Then also the RV to transport him as well!
I'm not usually very religious, but that's what I thought too. I mean, everything he needed in just the right order. The first family came at just the right time. A few minutes more in that cruiser and he would have burned to death.
lionattacksa, Shatner said at the end that the guy the trooper pulled over was driving a stolen vehicle and was later arrested. He was than sentenced to 40 years in prison. So the guy was caught eventually. Good thing...
my next door neighbor is a cop, and my girls are best friends with his daughter, I would do whatever I could to help them out if anything ever happened to him.
This video brought me to tears. I hate it when people say such awful things about police officers. They put there life on the line everyday for us, they deserve respect
Murder and attempted murder should carry the same penalty in my opinion. That guy meant to kill this police officer. Why should he be rewarded with a shorter prison sentence just because these other people helped Steve and he managed to pull through? If noone had helped, Steve would have died. The guy who shot him certainly did not have anything to do with the fact that he lived. He should've gotten the same sentence that he would've gotten if Steve had died.
Well 40 years come on that basically could hes in jail the rest of his life. Also the death penalty I am against it and thank god for it being banned here in Massachusetts after that Sacco and Vanzetti mess. If you sentance someone to death for murdering another indiviual and several others than you are no better the killer. Also when someone is sentanced to 20, 30, and 40 years god only knows if they live long enough after all those years. Also the death penalty is known to screw minorities
My brother is an Idaho State Trooper and I use to live there as well. This area where Steve was is so remote. It's scary for family members of these officers---never knowing what each day holds. But, I am proud of them all. They are heros. Thank God for citizens who are willing to help in time of need.
I'm from Idaho and remember when this happened. That stretch of interstate (I-84 between Rupert and Tremonton) is the last place I would want to have an accident. There are very few cars, no towns, farms or anything.
it goes to show you it takes a special person to do this kind of job and for their partners to live their lives never knowing if their husband or wife will come home at the end of their day
Thank God there are still good people around to look out for God's Angels. Fourty years for attempted murder? That's not enough time. Especially if he gets released early.
I agree. That person who shot him needs to spend his life in jail for ruining someone elses. Yeah, the Police man is still alive, but will never be like he used to be.
I think that bastard that shot and tried to leave the officer for dead should spend more then 40 years in jail.. That should be his new home for the rest of his life
it could be worse, the crime could have been committed here in Canada, where serial killers get released after only 10 years (reference to Karla Holmolka)
1, if the scum bag is dead, he cannot shoot anyone else.
2, Why should decent law abiding people and the cops wife, family and friends have to pay through their taxes to keep that scum bag in prison for several years.
Because killing is wrong and if you kill people who kill people someone who is suicidal a good way to commit suicide would be to commit homicide first. Keeping someone locked up for life would be a much worse punishment then being put out of your misery.
I'm kind of ambivalent about the death penalty, but I can see where ganeshkali is coming from with not wanting to have his hard earned money going to support worthless criminals, and getting rid of dangerous people who have shown they are willing kill other people. I think keeping murderers off the street is more important than making their lives miserable.
Driving a stolen car is one thing but shooting an officer that's 10 times as worse.

If the officer's radio didn't work, maybe the EMT's headset didn't.
Maybe he forgot to put it back in the kit.
I don't think he would help the officer but intentionally forget to call 911 w/ his headphone.

I would say no since he can't use his right arm (so he can't shoot and do something else) it would be hard to drive and he can only see 50%
