  • Britain was once an empire ruled by an emperor. Then it was a kingdom ruled by a king. And it finished up a country run by a c ... Margaret Thatcher!

  • god bless maggie

  • I'm a Teamster....Local 830....

  • too many people mocked arthur scargill & listened to thatcher, at least the people in the north of england, scotland & wales rejected thatcher & have a clear conscience

  • happy days

  • You Pommy union boofheads don't have a job any more - you lost your skills, lost your capital equipment, lost your jobs to your comrades in the corrupt communist China, and even lost your identity. You have been plundered by private equity parasites, excessive CEO pay and bonuses, foreign takeovers and property grabs by opportunistic foreigners. You may be still part of a union, but the reality is you are finished.

  • @creativeengineer and the public voted for it every step of the way

  • @creativeengineer umadbro?

  • @creativeengineer - I fear you may be right, unless people wake up and grow a pair. You forgot to mention the flood of cheap labour. But never fear, it is heading to Australia too via Christmas Island :-)

  • @WheelieMacBin You will find most of the refugees are genuine and have good reason to be here. Many have harrowing stories and really want to make a go of it here. In my opinion they are welcome. They are not pretentious like some others. If they become wealthy, they don't show off and are not into saving face and superstitious stupidity. From what I know the refugees in the main are generally prepared to work hard and make a go of it

  • Funny--I just read that the U.S. Military is planning on getting rid of pensions and going to a 401k type retirement plan for vets--well, they are public employees, too!

  • There is no working class

  • You don't get me...i'm with the Woolwich.

  • @ mugwamp4 .......how do you think he got to where he is now.......its a good tune with good lyrics & good musicians...........so go play somewhere else if you dont like it & are too young to understand it......twat.....

  • wtf ...rick wakeman on piano!!!cunt of a song...no wonder he left to play MUSIC,

  • @mugwamp4 sorry wakeman wasn't on piano for this one.

  • I'm a member of CWU! "Won't get me, I'm part of the union"

  • STRAWBS play The Wardrobe in Leeds - Friday 11th May 2012

  • Was with them in 73 and still am!

  • showing support for the strickers today

  • @guardianofhell strickers???? christ.... its no wonder the unions are useless....

  • My heart will be with the strikers, and I may join the rally. But I can't afford to strike. I just can't. I just won't be working, because it's my day off.

  • @helenaquarian i really, really cant either but shove it. i cant afford the suggested pension change and then work until im 95. theyll be wheeling us in from the nursing homes. we need to unite now and fight the gits.

  • @123jsbach we need to unite for future workers or there terms an cond will be shit fk these middle class cu ts and the houses they cant afford

  • @tvamp88 People should unite, yes. Do I believe that we should disrespect people who want better living conditions? Absolutely not! I am no economist, but it is most definitely not the people’s fault that house prices became ridiculous. You undermine the idea of unification by suggesting that the middle class is to blame (whatever that is today I’m not really sure)

  • @tvamp88 It is said that approximately 84% of Britain’s wealth is owned by 7% of the population. Clearly this has nothing to do with lower or upper middle class people, but is a large part of the problem.

  • I'm a union man, I'm on strike today and @hogalog, no I'm not a "fucking idiot". It's idiots like you who swallow all this shite about public sector pensions being gold-plated. If an average annual pension of around £5K for 20 years work is 'gold-plated', then what do you call the politicians final salary scheme (which is something like £51 million in deficit) and will see the likes of Fanny Alexander walk away with an annual pension of over £26K? You are either gullible or simply a tool.

  • Wow. Just WOW.

  • This song is oddly appropriate given the events in Britain happening now.

  • Shame the unions are a shower of useless bastards.

  • I,m afraid that we now live in a society of the have and the have nots...There are over twenty millionaires in the coalition cabinet and these are the people that can decide how far to turn the screws and I have to admit that Danny Alexander doesn,t look like he,s convincing himself never mind the Unions.

  • I hope hogalog nobody yakes your job pension or wage cut then you will eat your words

  • WHAT GOSE AROUND COME AROUND

  • Last verse - 'So though I'm a working man, I can ruin the government's plan, And though I'm not hard, the sight of my card Makes me some kind of superman' Enough said!

  • @Conrad1974 You say that but anytime your order anything online or go into shops or get public transport etc remember it's the working people who provide the basic service, moron, if the poor all stop working then idiots in offices and managers wont have jobs and whoose going to drive the lorries and pack parcels then rich won't be able to live so comfortably. You may say get foreigners in but how long would that last before they're fed up and they steal from the factories and shops

  • @Conrad1974 Continuation of comment Then foreigners taking housing, child and other benefits that you'd have to pay for.If your so brilliant why you posting on youtube, I wouldn't bother so much with the internet I would be exploring the world, buying expensive items and ect.Do you think that your middle class so you look down on the poor, well unless your superich and i mean mega multi millionaire, your a somebody,if not, your a nobody, very easily expendable just like the lower class

  • @Conrad1974

Go away and grow up Conrad. You are an imbecile.

  • Glad to see this is still going strong! One of my fav songs ever sung!

  • The Boss decided he was going to kick arse and have all the salary staff sign the shittiest contract I have ever seen, not me bother I stood firm and said no way "Mate" you can clip a letter onto the Union Composite agreement, just pencil in what your happy with said the Boss, so I did "the bloody lot", a week later Boss said ok , so I joined the Union just in case and "Mate" "You don't get me I'm part of the Union"

  • All out on November 30th!

  • StoryLady ( well named) If she was so good why did her own Party kick Thatcher out... I celebrated that night with other Trade Unionists , at last she knew what it was like to be made redundant by the Tories no wonder she told everyone to vote Labour in 1997. She was a traitor to the British People. I promise to celebrate when she dies anyone fancy coming to the Party ,,, I'm drawing up the guest list now !!!

  • @rockaroundtheclock56 I'll be having the day off to celebrate the death of bitch.

  • @rockaroundtheclock56

I'll be having the day off to celebrate when the old bag croaks it.

  • @rockaroundtheclock56 your a dickhead mate the unions at that time nearly killed the country

  • @azzabossman Silly Tory WC Dickhead

  • Why no england What do you know about B L the cars they produced are still running today, go to any classic car show, where are the Japanese classic cars apart from in the scrapyard. Shoddy workman ship my eye.. The unions are on the rise because it was you tories who used your power in an ignorant manner, I was a union organiser at B L I was proud of our workforce so much that the orientals & the germans took them on & glad to, because Brit Engineers are the best...... look at BMW

  • Working people are standing up against the boss man again havent you read the papers.... more power to their elbow god bless em

  • she was only a grocers daughter in my eyes as evil as thay come state funeral my arse

  • Who is John Galt?

  • the strawbs did this as an anti-union song. listen again carefully and you'll get it - especially the last verse

  • @richnfamous59 False! the lyrics can be taken as being sarcastic of the unions IF that is how you wish to interpret them( as you obviously want to) However, the Strawbs have stated many ,many times that the song is not meant to be sarcastic or a parody of the Unions in any way what so ever!

  • @richnfamous59 A lot of bands say things like that to cover their backs, they came up with the song obviously based on unions. They don't neccessarily care, it's something to sing about but they're singing from some union members point of view, I expect also that when they're saying won't get beat up part of the union, union members knew they weren't invincible but would have good crack at being treated better and having more rights. Not Strawbs own potential view on the subject (third person)

  • @richnfamous59 bollocks

  • 1973? Margaret Thatcher? You are as big a bunch of retards as any militant union man ever was. YOU were the cause of the downfall of GB. With your BL shoddy working practices, your blinkered outlook for the good of the people of the country as long as you got paid a week's wages for doing f... all. Then the miners who thought they should play God with *my* life - no. They were too stupid to use that power wisely and looking at some of these comments, you donkeys haven't moved on in 40 years.

  • All bullshit aside, this is a great song. With real meaning.

  • All out on November 30th!

  • I hope thay play this song at margaret thatcher's funeral , just to piss her ghost off.

  • @vashna3799 I hope they bury her face down with a stake thru her heart under an aspen tree

  • @storylady Loved your comment, Thatcher inflicted unbelievable misery on the working people of Britain and destroyed more manufacturing then the German Luftwaffe in WWII. I for one will not mourn her passing. Nothing pleased me more to see her leaving No10 and crying.

  • @storylady You talk like a pratt, she was the best leader this country has had. She didnt piss about like the wets we have now.Soft as shit all of em.

  • @slickmicky54 Even as a socialist I must agree that Margaret Thatcher was one of the strongest leaders this country has ever had. Yes she was strong, but alas she was fatally flawed in so far as the contempt that she displayed in abundance for those in society who unfortunately carry the can for everthing, pick up the pieces and generally pay for everything that the top 5% of society un-ashamed, collect without so much as a thank you!

  • @storylady not face down but swinging in a gibbett with crows pecking at her fetid cadaver

  • I think in "any situation" in life , "No Matter What It May Be", ( Union or Non Union related) if someone chooses to turn their back on others, especially so if it is a situation where their family or friends or work mates, colleagues are involved , in order to satisfy their own self interests , then is it any surprise, that their actions may cause upset / contempt from those who they have chosen to turn their back on ?????

  • @AnAutumnsDay the master of self interest was that twat from yorkshire. sold the british coal industry down the river trying to be britains lenin! if it werent for the unions, we would still have heavy industry and mass employment. thats a fact that simply cant be argued with.

  • @hogalog No Thatcher, the mistress of "diseased" ideas and the tory sc*m whom she was the matron of, did that.!

  • @AnAutumnsDay aye, nowt to do with demarkation, people going to sleep on night shift, strikes over things as trivial as cold pies in the canteen, not being able to fire people who were actually fucking shit at the job. instead of facing off against the government, scargill should have sat down with them and asked "what can i do for you?" ie: represented his people properly. the mines they wanted to close that caused the strike had no coal left in em! why keep them open?!?!

  • The unions stood up for the working man, as long as they had a union card. If not then they were scabs to be treated like scum. If they crossed a picket line because they wanted to work they were also scabs isn't that right???

  • 27 people they work like slave and they like it

  • The Unions represent the interests of all the working Men and Women in the country ! Whilst , on the other hand the Tories and the wannabee tories( i.e. the Hyacinth Buckets and Golf Club toads of this world ) represent absolutely nothing but greed and their own worthless interests ! I know where I stand in life, and that certainly isn't with Tories , buckets and the toads of this world!

  • socialist labour is what we need, ed and his boo boys are just blue rinse labour

  • i all ways get my way....if i strike for higher pay.....if only....come the revolution

  • I always thought that this was purely ironic.....

  • To all you Thatcher and tory haters think on... there is nothing fair in life but do tell all what you say to the average minimum wage man on just £6 an hour trying to live,, when the union led RMT all powerful bob ( i couldnt give a shit about the average man) crow makes sure his men get £55,000 a year, when the police and the nurses struggle on 36,000 and 31,000... When your beloved unions were in charge they got their workers higher pay while others got left behind but inflation went up 10%

  • @thedaisydog4 Minimum wage an absolute outrage , scandalous, according to the Tory Party, because it would suposedly destroy the economy ! Think that tell's you all you need to know about the Tory party!

  • @thedaisydog47 If you were one of Maggies millions (unemployed) neither the unions OR the Tories did you any favours. Agencies were a joke and acted like Hitler and you had friggin' spies outside your door evert few days checking you really were NOT working and I had to struggle to get a roof over my head anyway. The 80s was the worst decade though I am too young to remember the 1920s.

  • High time that the Unions considered dumping New Labour, and started all over again with their own political party, a "real labour party", a party which truly represents the workers! and not as this Blair/Thactcher New Labour party sh*te, who are nothing more than watered down Tories! and who haven't a clue what they represent anymore!!

  • @AnAutumnsDay well said that man/woman....lets have a proper labour..not any of this modern labour crap..

  • @AnAutumnsDay Im with you my m8 sick to death of new labour bullshit.

  • Better red, than Tory brain dead!

  • @AnAutumnsDay w00t!! 8- D

  • Reminds me of my Nazi years.

    .....good times.

Actually more when I was a boss to the working man....GREAT TIMES!

Actually this is like when me and Thatcher went and danced on a WHOLE BUNCH of graves.

    (Not being ironic either)

  • hand-cranked titles at the end on super 8 film, and a brilliant song....god i miss the 70's

  • Nice to hear this on Mike Smith's show on 2UE yesterday, not heard it for yonks !

  • Dave Cousins looked more than a little disinterested..

  • Workers of the world, unite!

    Пролетарии всех стран, соединяйтесь!

    Προλετάριοι όλων των χωρών, ενωθείτε!

  • they'll repeat it to cameron in hell! come on people-stand up!!! they fleecing us to make up for the bankers deficit! Stand up for your rights !!!!

  • bring back unions!

  • @davidinbirmingham Yes, that is correct, David. Even in June of 1983 - when Mrs Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party won a 'landslide' victory in the General Election - only a MINORITY of British adults voted Tory. A large minority, definitely - butm at the end of the day, still a minority.

It really annoys me, therefore, when I hear Conservative politicians going on about how their party is the "natural party of government".

  • Unfortunately they DO get me, even though " I'm part of ".....( I now work for the NHS ) the unions shite ! bunch of yes ( wo)/men. Where's Jimmy Reid, Vic Feather, et al when you need them ?

  • THIS SONG NEEDS TO BE RE-RELEASED NOW !!! to remind the gov and the unions what the working man will only allow them to kick him so many times !!

  • let the bankers evade 150 billion taxes an make us pay? people need to stand up!!

  • now more than eva. such a tune.

  • The Man Bevin made the national health service and the welfare state to make unfortunate people, eat and live.It was'nt meant to be a lifestyle, and ive seen the people who have lived there life on the state so good on this goverment if they can reed them out

  • Only decent one out there is Solidarity, it does not politically vet members

  • stick the unions, all left wing filth tunnelling their money into fighting the right. Marxist bastards, you noticed how rich the leaders are? you mugs

  • this song reminds me of those times its the only time the working man stood up to the bosses ,it was a time never seen before and since

  • @wellbeing100

Just exactly HOW young are you?

This has being going on for over a hundred years in its current form, and thousands of years in its most basic form.

Do not believe either that joining a union is harmonious with the beliefs you have NOR that this is a NEW thing!

  • Brings back my childhood great song

  • this is the best song ever . FOR ALL UNIONS ALL OVER THE WORLD

  • For what it's worth, out of curiosity hearing about how it's supposed to be a satire, I just popped over to Wikipedia and looked the song up. According to Wiki the band's members deny that it was meant as a satire or parody or anything like that. Guys, when listening to the idealogues (left or right) due diligence is recommended.

  • @Taiwanlight I think that the lyric " I'm not too hard, but the sight of my card makes me some kind of super man" is quite demonstrative of a group making a point... and it isn't sympathetic to the unions. This is satire .

  • @diddydiddycool Perhaps, but it's perfectly possible that parts of the song were making points about certain personalities or attitudes within the union movement without necessarily being hostile to unionism as a whole. You can be sympathetic to something and still slip in some criticisms. Other lyrics such as 'wise to the lies of the company spies' seem to show some knowledge of the history of the struggle to establish unions and don't sound to me to be particularly sympathetic to the bosses.

  • long live the mighty unions the only way we ever got a fair deal

  • long live the mighty unions the only way we ecer got a fair deal

  • peepz will b singin this now the conservatives r in again. kick em out n vote labour. i remember my dad avin this record n he always used 2 play it. his a very political man and clever wen it cums 2 politics. lol. he shud b prome minister.

  • We Shall Overcome.

Extremely cynical way to say it but it has to be said.

  • lol @ all you lefties on here stuck in the 70s.

  • @ukstevey 70's???? The 60's not the 70's! The 70's kinda sucked ya know especially in what they served up and called music.

  • @ukstevey fuck off mong.

  • @ukstevey smash the left

  • @ukstevey so ... you 'righties' think that the quality of life in Britain today - in the year 2011 - is superior to what it was in the 1970's, do you?

Well, the gap in wealth between the posh people and those at the lower end of the income spectrum is certainly considerably wider now that it was back in the 70's. I guess that, in the eyes of you right-wing Tory loving people, that can only be a good thing.

  • @TheEctomorph Do you think that the quality of life in the ukraine in the 30s was better than in the 1890s? At least the gap in wealth was 0 and that is the only important thing! As long as there is equality fraternity and liberty can wait,

  • @deghst Sir: I don't know anything about the Ukraine and its economic history, I am afraid.

I am not an extreme left-winger, by any means; I just think that people like Mrs (now Baroness) Thatcher were too concerned with improving the quality of life for the posh people and those at the top end of the income spectrum ...... and not concerned enough about improving the quality of life for those in the lower socio-economic classes.

  • Great song! We need unions more now than any time since their inception.

  • Power to the people

  • @bodhranbliss yeah right comrade "All unions ever got us was holidays, lunch breaks, tea breaks, pay rises, better safety" it may be a satire, but we sing it not as a satire today 40 years later:-)

  • @vorhaug Well said Brother or Sister !

  • FUCK U Government !!!

  • Hate to ruin it for many but this is an ANTI-union song. supposed to be satire.

All unions ever got us was holidays, lunch breaks, tea breaks, pay rises, better safety, apart from that........

  • @bodhranbliss :-D

  • @davidinbirmingham Yeah, compared to the 0% your Royal hating, Police detesting commie brothers polled. Still, you have Lord Madleson and George Galloway to vote for. Labour = Iraq

  • Omg, what a stupid thing to say. "Only a minority of people voted Conservative"? Then why did they get in by a landslide? Can you imagine the state this country would have been in with that arse Kinnock ? Now? you have posh labour luvvies, like LORD Mandleson, George 'I LOVE IRIAQ' Galloway and pro IRA Ken Livingston. You should feel ashamed at a labour party that hate Britian, hate the Queen, the Police and always lump us with massive debt that the working class have to suffer. What a fool

  • @bottlechuff you're as thick as pigshit.

  • @retchen You are just like the rest of your British hating Labour Oxbridge brothers. Stupid and uncaring. You must feel so proud, every time your Union buddies organise a march, and break windows, fight the Police, smash up shops, throw paint on war memorials and vandalise working class peoples homes. What an arse. You should fuck off with all your rich Labour peers, and live in France with the IRA and everyone else that hates the UK. Posh twat.

  • @bottlechuff Sir: I refer to the comment that you made (a couple of months ago) to a 'You Tube' viewer who calls himself "retchen". You stated (and I quote your exact words, verbatim): "You are just like the rest of your British hating Labour Oxbridge brothers. Stupid and uncaring."

Since when have your lot - The Conservative Party - been renowned as a caring, compassionate party????

It is not for nothing that The Conservative Party has acquired the nickname 'The Nasty Party'.

  • It took Thacther to be brave to beat the unions. All the posh boys of Labour would love the unions back because they are all crooked and thats how Labour is funded. Hopefully the Con Lib duo can kill off these dinos forever. Everyone that complains about Thatcher did not live through it as shown by the landslides she was voted in again and again...

  • Did The Scaffold (english group) ever do a version of this song?

  • @jiffy017 Not as far as I know.

  • @gotmihandstuck

The unavoidable facts of the matter are these:

    1] Your side lost

    2] My side won

Better get to terms with it.

  • The mess that Britain was in in the eary 70s was not the sole fault of the unions. They were merely trying to obtain a wage that was in line with the staggering rise in inflation during the era. Oil shortages arising from a conflict in the middle east, were just as responsible, if not more so, for the 3-day week than the coal miners strike was.

  • @gotmihandstuck

I do not have have to make any research on the subject since I lived through most of it. Miners strike in the early 80's, carried out without a ballot because Scargill knew he would lose it; etc. I live in Britain now and I lived in Britain then, so I know we are better off.

  • @Stinkinini then you live in another country called Britain to the one I'm living in then or your living in cloud cuckoo land, it was thatcher that caused the unrest and the trouble, and she used the police AND the army to do it, and now we have the idiots in power!!! BLAH

  • Play it on your i-Pod when it's your turn in the queue to piss on Thatcher's grave

  • @TomthatiscalledTom what a good comment lol

  • Comment removed

  • @TomthatiscalledTom

You got your name wrong, hehe it's okay.

Everyone his youtube should actually say TWATthatiscalledTom

  • @sazzrhilee Ooops, my mistake sorrry...TWAT, in my case, stands for 'Throwing Wrenches At Thatcherites'

  • Comment removed

  • @TomthatiscalledTom Yeah, play it on your slave made MP3 player while you piss on the grave of the bitch who deregulated labor to the point where children could die for your Apple products.

    GREAT IDEA!

  • @TomthatiscalledTom

deffo a big thumbs up from me

  • I used to be union in the 60's. Was disillusioned with all the corruption I saw. I quit my union job, went with a non union company and had a 22year career that allowed me to rise to the top.

Hard work, honesty, duty and appreciation allowed me to excel.

Maybe some need a union but the worker bees never will!

  • @indieboy26 Well done for you!..now i cant really make a comment on your countries relations with the unions, you being in the usa, "Hard work, honesty, duty and appreciation" what sort of job?, Finance?

  • Brilliant song but wrong lyrics. Not unexpectedly, this song arose in the early 70's, when the Unions were deliberately trying to wreck the Nation. So, no sympathy, only relief that the Unions lost; the Country is far better off this way.

  • @Stinkinini= "early 70's, when the Unions were deliberately trying to wreck the Nation." It was Thatcher that caused the unrest, SHE tried to destroy the union movement, and the country is better off? WHICH country do you live in!?. try doing some reseach on the subject

  • This song's lyrics ran quite true until Mrs Thatcher came along....

  • hogalog... Is that your policy then.. 'I'm alright jack'.. stuff the rest...actualy we need the unions now just as much as we needed them 80-100 years ago,,very little has changed over the years,,,and we have to fight every step of the way....to uphold our rights,,,do you realy think you can put down the sword that your grandfathers fought with,,,just because you dont think you dont need it any longer?...freedom of the working men have to be fought for every day, if not you will be trampled on

  • @gotmihandstuck hold on so we need the unions, those same unions led by the same people who fucked the country in the 70s? what we NEED is private companies providing decent secure jobs and we need people to get up and get into work of a morning instead of whinging about how shit their lot is and planning strike after strike because the democratic process didnt get the minority the government they wanted.

  • @hogalog Yes we need the unions back in this country,,and it was not the unions that f'd the country, it was the goverments, you should do a little more research on

the topic before you rant. We do need industry, after all we could show the world by example what a production worker was. but we still need to protect the rights of the workers, what we have are employers that make slaves of their workforce

and sack them if they question them.and you think this is acceptable?.

    BLAH

  • @gotmihandstuck hold on, the heavy industries are gone because they were nationalised and the unions wouldnt let them sack ANYBODY. there were guys going into shipyards and finding a quiet spot and going to sleep. there were guys at rover who quite simply didnt want to do the job, so didnt bother, but they couldnt fire them, because of the unions. im a production worker, im a member of no union and i can assure you im not being exploited. fancy that, having to actually work for your money.

  • @hogalog 'Work for my money'?....I know what working for a living is 12 hour nights, five nights a week no overtime pay, crap working conditions...pulling worker' trapped hands out of machinery, and ending up being tossed on the

scrap heap..yeah I know what my working life was. and yeah we still need the unions .What about the people that are being exploited are you going to

stand up for them?, I dont think you have the nuts to do it.
