  • I heard the original version of this at my local leisure farm and I was like "Nah, Wilburys do it better!"

  • An excellent tribute to Del Shannon . Love this version .

  • As I understand it, and please correct me if my facts are wrong, When Roy orbison died, the other members of the Wilburys decided to contact Del Shannon, as a replacement, he had just had a disasterous comeback and took his own life, without responding to the call from the wilburys,

  • nearly Del but not quite.

  • It sounds a little bit like Electric Light Orchestra doesn't it?

    Jeff Lyne is amazing here!

  • This is a Del Shannon composition, not Gary Lewis.

  • An Old Gary Lewis tune.

  • @catzimman2001 Gary probably recorded it, as he recorded lots of other people's hits for his LPs, but this was Del Shannon's song.

  • Fantastic band!!! <3

  • Thanks Pizzadealer R.I.P. Del

  • What a GREAT cover!

  • God! they covered it soo good!:D<3

  • Is this song available anywhere?

  • @cygnus53

It's a bonus track on the Traveling Wilburys volume 3, and it's available on amazon.

  • Fantastic just wonderful listening.

  • Del Shannon

  • who is singing? jeff lynne?

  • @range567W

Yes, that's the wonderful voice of Jeff :-)

  • The story goes that roughly around the time Roy Orbison was dying, Tom Petty and George Harrison were enroute to visit Del Shannon and sign him to the Wilburys. Unfortunately they were too late. Quite a sad story..

  • Thank you. I can rock it with windows down.

  • Terrific cover by an EXCEPTIONAL group of musicians. Love the post. Thanks!

  • Hi Derk Sorry, but I think: dibenj, hissijurvonen, david1leigh and Ms Songcollector are right about this one: that Jeff is singing the song, but I want to agree with MsSongCollector that George is backing him up. It's also possible that Tom Petty is singing this song since it was he who befriended Del Shannon professionally and was instrumental [sorry 4 the pun] in getting him in the Wilbury' to replace Roy Orbison.

  • Definitely Mr. Lynne.

  • Who sang this Del Shannon cover on the Wilbury's Album?

  • @eleni1968 Jeff Lynne (ELO)

  • @eleni1968 def George Harrison

  • ELO /JL soud GREAT

  • It's on iTunes, just search it.

  • As I walk along I wonder What went wrong with our love A love that was so strong And as I still walk on I think of the things we done together While our hearts were young I'm a-walkin' in the rain Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain Wishin' you were here by me To end this misery And I wonder I wa-wa-wa-wa-wonder Why A-wa-wa-wa-wa-why she ran away And I wonder where she will stay My little runaway A-run-run-run-run-runaway
  • Del Shannon is a Wilbury, not a lot of people know that, but it's as right as rain.

  • definitly Jeff singing, you can tell his voice when he sings the deeer in wonder. He did another Del Shannon copy, little town flirt and that was better than the original. Think its an extra track on the remastered Discovery album. Have been a fan of Jeff's voice since around 1971 and have followed ELO through their whole career.

  • I think that's Jeff singing and George backing him up. I've heard lots of copys of this song and the traveling wilburys are the only ones that I would even say measured up to del's version of it. I love it!

  • Jeff has the perfect voice for this type of song. Always thought he had one of the best voices in the business.

  • Is this an Anti Nowhere League cover or the other way around?

  • @ImYourDeity This song is 50 years old... It's a Del Shannon cover.

  • What a cover! As good as Del Shannon. Unforgettable!

  • Still wondering!

  • Sweet, but what's with the 2 minutes of silence at the end?

  • Beautiful cover by a fantastically talented group. The Traveling Wilburys were truly a musical gift to the world.

  • After Roy Orbison's untimely death, the Wilburys were going to invite Del Shannon as a replacement, if only he had held on for a few more days things would have been so different

  • The other version with the harmonica solo is also the Willburys, and that's Dylan playing the harmonica, instead of Jeff Lynne's note-for-note copy of the original organ solo in this one. Both versions were recorded as a tribute to Del Shannon after he committed suicide in 1990.

  • Del Shannon did background vocals on Full Moon Fever. He is heard on the song Running Down a Dream

  • I have a version of this song, very similar to this, I really think that Jeff Lynne sings on it too, but it has a guitar and an harmonica solo instead of the keyboard solo. The backing vocals and the drums, all the music it's almost the same, the voice is a little younger, but i'ts the same singing style. Anyone knows who plays this version I'm talking about?

  • Cool cover, thanks a lot!

  • Originally recorded by Del Shannon who committed suicide at his home in California today Feb 8, 1990.0 T.I.P. Del : (

  • Yeah I know my masters voice....Jeff Lynne

  • No. Sorry, it is NOT the Equal to Del Shannon's original. Not as raw Heart-Felt Emotional Being there. I doubt if Del Shannon, Himself, could have Equalled his first version a second time, either.

  • @LiveLoveLives The Wilburys were a laid back band not a raw emotion band. They were about good times and enjoying life, not a lot of drama. So I'm not sure that comparison is necessary.

  • @verbusen You wrote, "I'm not sure that comparison was necessary." - LOL! - What's 'necessary'? - Hey, hum 'Runaway' while your clipping your toenails, if that's what pleases you, - for all I care!! - But the Real and Best 'Runaway' is Del Shannon's, for all Time! - I suppose many people are unconsciously suffering from internalized traumatic denial syndrome, and so Real Messages can trigger an uncomfortable reminder of forgotten traumatic unpleasantness. But healing can only come with Reality!!

  • Awesome just awesome. Jeff Lynne is awesome.

  • Jeff's voice is fucking fabulous.

  • I like that they recorded this as a tribute to the recently passed Del Shannon, but its too close to the original for me. I don't understand covers that are exactly the same. Imagine if movies did that - shot for shot, line for line everything the same. Oy.

  • Get the audio from this clip at tubepull doht cohm.

  • Goddamn this is good...

  • It is Del, as he replaced Roy after he passed.

  • Del did not die in the 80's He died in 1990 after killing himself.

  • It's the Travellin' Wilburys...Someone said Bob Dylan's voice was missing, it's quite possible he didn't play or sing on this song or you just can't hear him. Just because one voice is missing is missing doesn't mean it's not the travellin' wilburys. He may have just skipped this session. Maybe he was sick, on vacation, on tour, felt he couldn't sing on this song....you never know why someone may be missing.

  • who sings this, i know its not dylan but it could be jeff lane or gorege harrison. anyways this is a awsome song and they made fun of it on walk hard .

  • @gotmilf6911 It's Jeff Lynne singing.

  • If it's not The Traveling Wilburys then who the heck could play with such mastery this 60's classic?

  • this is the travelling wilburys... definitely.

  • Jeff runs away with this one. Big surpise. Only one of the best voices ever!

  • A great tribute to a great singer and song writer!

  • jeff Lynne on vocals with the remaining wilburys, jeff was a great fan of Del shannon, great track. available on the wilburys compilation.

  • Saw Del Shannon as part of multi-group concert not more than 2 years B4 his death. Against many other high-calibur, legendary acts, many of whom had been touring w/ only brief breaks for 30+ & nearly 40 years @ that time, who received repeated standing ovations w/ thunderous roars, he took the stage & proceeded 2 almost literally put 'em all 2 shame. He practically *torched the place*, such was the effect of his performance.

This tribute is the only one which comes close 2 doing him justice.

  • I don't understand. Enlighten me:

R U saying U can't recognize Jeff Lynne's voice, arguably 1 of most distinctive voices ever recorded?

    R U saying U can't recognize equally-distinctive Wilbury synchopated backbeat?

R U saying U were never a real fan, & so don't *really* know their sound?

R U saying you were never a real Del Shannon fan, & so don't realize that no one short of The Wilburys would ever have a hope of recreating his sound?

    Or R U merely saying U need new speakers/buds/headphones?

  • I have no idea who this is, but it's really good.

  • me+this song=happy:D

  • whats up with the minute of silence at the end haha

  • How Come Ringo was never listed as a member of the Band.. He played the drums on almost every one of their tracks..

  • @TheDonofMMA Where did you get this information? I haven't found it at all...I think you may be mistaken.

  • @TheDonofMMA nope it was Jim Keltner playing the drums, not Ringo.

  • Wasn't Del supposed to be one of the original Wilbury's? His passing was untimely.

  • @FramerLLC I think he was going to replace Roy after his death, but I could be wrong? I think I remember reading that somewhere.

  • The Wilburys recorded this song just after Del Shannon's tragic death. There were rumors that he would have been invited to join the band, had he lived.

  • The guys doing this song are NOT The wilburys, and need to get in tune.....

  • This is really really good........love the Rick 12 string in there.

  • Miss Del

  • Thank you for posting! :D I've been searching for this song for ages, trying to remember the whole thing.

  • Although I LOVE this...I don't think it's the Wilburys....I could be wrong....Where did it come from...I've never heard it before....I thought I had all the Wilburys stuff....PLEASE let me know where it came from.

  • @77KMAN Bonus tracks on 2007 re-release in The Traveling Wilburys Collection box set 12. "Nobody's Child" (Cy Coben, Mel Foree) – 3:28 13. "Runaway" (Max Crook, Del Shannon) – 2:30

  • @pizzadealer GREAT.....gonna have to get that box set...thanks

  • @pizzadealer Also it may have been a B-side to one of the Vol 3 singles, like "Nobody's Child". The way I heard it, Del was going to replace Roy Orbison in the Wilburys, but then killed himself. The Wilburys then did this in tribute.

  • @pizzadealer origanally by Del Shannon :)

  • @pizzadealer The bonus tracks were from the never released Wilburys Vol 2. Del Shannon died, and the project was shelvrd.

  • @77KMAN

Not sure, it does sound like Jeff Lynne..although like you I had no idea the Wilbury's did this song.

  • @77KMAN Del Shannon was rumoured to join them after Roy Orbison's death. He never did, but they recorded this in honour of Del after he committed suicide in 1990.

  • @77KMAN I don't think it's the TWs either. Bob Dylan's voice isn't in there

  • @77KMAN It is. It was the B-side of "She's My Baby".

You don't hear Lynne and Petty?

  • @77KMAN

Its a Del Shannon song who sadly died in the 80s RIP Del

  • @77KMAN It was on the 12 inch B side She's My Baby

  • @77KMAN It is the Wilbury's.. I have the greatest hits cd

  • hutc101

Hey 77KMAN, it's an old Del Shannon song. It was also done by The Ventures, it was released February 1961. It was written by Del Shannon and Max Crook. The Traveling Wilburys released a version as the B-side of their single "She's My Baby". (Lead Wilbury Tom Petty also references the song in his 1989 hit "Runnin' Down a Dream", describing himself singing "Runaway" along with Shannon as he drives along listening to the radio.)

  • @77KMAN Hi This song was origonally done by Del shannon and he was going to join The Wilburys after Roy Orbison's death but unfortunately he also died before they could record with him, after his death the other members decided to disband the group.

  • @77KMAN I'd bet lefty it is The Taveling Wilburys.

  • Thanks Traveling Wilbury's for this tribute to Del.God Bless you guys for remembering how great he was.RIP Del..,you are still loved and missed by many.

  • Germany FIFA cup we will sing this song in the rain the other teams will fell the PAIN ahahhah from Runaway Travelling Wilburys... now Deutschland we can now sing this song Runaway with the WORLD CUP FIFA Beat the smart asses

  • I agree with all the previous comments about Jeff Lynne's fine singing voice and his amazing talent, but what no one's mentioned so far is that, if you think about it, Jeff Lynne is the catalyst that brought the Wilbury's together in the first place. Sure! It's George's band; there's no doubt about that, but after his ELO days were over, Jeff turned to producing and even before he hooked up with George on "Cloud 9", he produced the Heartbreakers "Full Moon Fever" album. Thank you, Jeff!

  • fantastic

  • george harison sang this shit

  • @derkdirtydiggler +

    no chance

  • my name is gavin, im 8 years old and i think this song is very vesy goooooooood. my dad told me to put all the o's in

  • @yellowgreensocks

Your dad is a very smart man. Ask him to give you the Beatles, And George Harrison. I was 8 yrs old when I first saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. I'm an old guy, but good music is for people of all ages. Rock N Roll Forever

  • who is sining this,is it petty i cant tell.someone tell me

  • @HUskersGuy12345 Jeff Lynne sings lead. Sounds like George joins him on the chorus.

  • Jeff Lynne Is Amazing on this track

  • I wish I could find the original version with the guitar and harmonicaq solo.

  • Amazing version!!!

  • First time I found the wilbury's version of the this was on a cd single in the 90's while wondering around amsterdam. This one is a longer , but sounds like its from the same take, guess they changed it a bit for the single. I hate the version of this they put on the Wilbury Dvd & Cd release, but love and thank God they finally put the video's out. Ok, before I go on and on , I'll shut up.

  • Jeff Lynne is always being praised for his songwriting talents, but rarely he is praised for his excellent singing voice, Jeff has a fantastic voice, and can work it on any style or genre of music, he really is a true musical genius!

  • Absolutley love this song, could listen to it over and over again and not get bored!

  • Thanks for putting up this fantastic song... I was a kid at the time..lve it

  • brings back so many memories, sad innit, superb

  • Damn....sounds as good as Del. Best cover I ever heard.

  • @wrotenwasp

Not cover...Del Shannon was part of the Wilbury's and after his suicuide they dedicated this to him...of course the oroginal track from 61 was his own

  • @wrotenwasp is it the brummie accent!!?

  • @wrotenwasp this is awesome just wonderful!

  • @wrotenwasp Del was in this band before he committed suicide and the band covered it as a remembrance to him.

  • THANKS FOR POSTING hats off to Del Sahnnon R.I.P. good ole tune
