This band, like so many others, makes me proud of my native NC. We may not top the charts in pop, rock, or hip-hop right now, but we have plenty of great music to keep our spirits up, and I love that the Drops are keeping that tradition going!
My wife and I are going to see the CCDs in a couple of weeks here in Madison WI. They played at a festival in town last summer, but I missed them. I especially like this clip, even though it isn't their best, because of its setting at UNC. I went to grad school at Carolina, and met my wife there. Being young, and in Chapel Hill, in the late 60s and early 70s was a wondrous thing.
Come back to London! All over the world there are people who can hear the roots of modern music in these authentic performances. And we LOVE it! Hey - we love YOU too, guys! You are a lot of fun! :-)
Absolutely love this group, hope to see them soon. ( However, I think the jug player ripped off Brisco Darling on some of this). "Got time to breath, got time for music"
I used to hate this kind of music growing up. But now I can really get into this it is great to I KNOW that some young black musicians are carrying on this rich legacy that few Blacks even acknowledge much less appreciate.
I heard you all on fresh air on NPR tonight and had to look you up on YouTube. I truly love your music and will definitely purchase your new cd. Keep up the good work.
no he's not he's using it as a resonating chamber. if you knew anything about jug bands you would know that if you blow into it it will only generate one tone
Amazing and empowering. Very interesting phenomena going on here: young African Americans accepting and appreciating Black American traditions that have been previously viewed as racist steretypes. A similar thing is happeing with 18 year old, Noni Carter's new book, "Good Fortune."
If you ever feel the need to see a truly great show then you must see the Carolina Chocolate Drops! They will without a doubt blow you away. I saw the at the Bijou in Knoxville a couple weeks ago and I am still smiling and stomping my feet.
This is old time music pre-dates the modern bluegrass by some 50+yrs and more but it's still folk grassroots music. In other words is the daddy of the bluegrass....
Bluegrass predates the blues we know and black/white folks borrowed each others songs so there was so much cross fertilisation. The banjo is perfect result of an instrument that was introduced from african-americans
Actually Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass, was influenced by the Blues, an American musical genre that came about via gospel/spiritual songs, work field songs and holler songs of black Americans/ex-slaves post-American Civil War. So the Blues were around at least 30 years before Monroe was born.
Wow. Just left South Carolina's Boone Hall Bluegrass Festival. Can't say enough about these guys. They are such a rare group of musicians. Trying to give a description of them is impossible as there is nothing I've come across to give a comparison to. One word here folks.....TALENT. They KNOW what they are about. I love we have been gifted with them sharing our unique history of the universal language of music. Many thanks Carolina Cho1colate Drops. You have many new fans
How anyone can say that this band is not bluegrass or 'historically inaccurate' is beyond me...this is one of the most AUTHENTIC bluegrass/string bands I've ever heard and they kick ass!
Well i have to disagree . Maybe we need to remind ourselves the difference between bluegrass( been around since the 1940s) and old-time fiddle music (around for centuries) They are great musicians nevertheless, I just wanted to get that across
Fluff, after hearing the CCD talk about their own music, I realized what your saying is absolutley right....they themselves do not call it bluegrass...really just stringband music....a combination of genre's.thanks for taking me to school on this....
You can beat a good fiddle and banjo and the old jug - you don't need a bass fiddle when you have it. I love the old claw hammer style this young lady is using and her banjo playing is terrific. All three of these musicians are great and, as has been mentioned in posts on other videos of theirs, they make lots of music with few instruments. Thanks so much for posting. - Paula
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are unique in that they've managed to create their own style of old time with a conglomeration of instruments and sounds that aren't necessarily historically "accurate"....their music has the ability to transcend genre and become something alive and present.
They are completely awesome. My enjoyment of this video was tempered only by my nonstop fear that the banjo player was going to get her eye poked out by the fiddle player's bow!
they came to my school today which is east lawrence midddle school. they will also be coming to the chicken and egg festival in moulton alabama april 19 if your a big carolina choclate drops fan!
As great as they are on video, they are ten times better live. We saw them in concert last night. They combined extraordinary showmanship with dazzling musicianship to deliver one of the most if not THE most exciting concert we've ever experienced. Do NOT miss them when they come to your town!
You just found your favorite OLD TIME band. These folks are in no way shape or form a bluegrass band. That is an affront to both bluegrass and these fine musicians.
I'm not an elitist. In fact I love BG and OT too. This is just NOT bluegrass, which is a very specific genre, and these folks here are certainly not trying to be bluegrass. Know any OT musicians? Ask THEM if this is bluegrass or old time. There's really a lot of differences, and if you want to educate yourself, do some research, there isn't enough room for me to do it for you here.
You are missing my point. I know the difference, but calling them bluegrass, wrong as it may be, is not an insult. I am sure if you called most old time musicians bluegrass that they would explain the difference between their music and bluegrass. It makes no sense to consider it an insult.
Well, I AM a musician, and the only reason I responded in the first place is because I DO play bluegrass AND old time, and players of either of those genres DO make a point about the differences between the two. That includes the father of bluegrass himself Bill Monroe. I didn't create the various genres that music falls into - that was a record exec's doings. Like I said, there isn't room here for educating the masses but there are plenty of online resources to search. I'm done here.
djsilage, the bottle in old days was known as the jug, hence the name jug band, so if a band played one of these they would probably b known as a jug band!
ya'll are awesome......I love the banjo, fiddle, and the jug. I grew up listening to this type of music on Friday and Saturday nights in south Mississippi......I am only 44 yrs old, but we had this type of music for entertainment....clean and fun!!!......thanks for posting this video......will continue to view!!!!!

I was at the Grand Ole Opry when they were there and it was amazing. They are amazing performers! I'm surprised that they haven't dominated the radios yet, because their is a part of their music that everyone would love.
hi/if you have xm satellite radio, they are going to be on xm 11, grand ole opry, saturday 061408, 7:30 pm...i just googled these guys up and i love their music WOW
