  • This band, like so many others, makes me proud of my native NC. We may not top the charts in pop, rock, or hip-hop right now, but we have plenty of great music to keep our spirits up, and I love that the Drops are keeping that tradition going!

  • I <3 Black People

  • My wife and I are going to see the CCDs in a couple of weeks here in Madison WI. They played at a festival in town last summer, but I missed them. I especially like this clip, even though it isn't their best, because of its setting at UNC. I went to grad school at Carolina, and met my wife there. Being young, and in Chapel Hill, in the late 60s and early 70s was a wondrous thing.

  • I wish the video quality was just a bit better, because this is a great performance.

  • This is American Culture, where Country Music, came from. She's usually barefoot. Guess it's too cold. They're great !

  • Cannot wait to catch you in Peekskill at the Paramount Theater! I've been a fan since I heard you first back on WFUV.org!

  • Just heard you guys perform on the BBC .....FANTASTIC!

  • Just seen 'em on the BBC on the Andrew Marr Show on Sunday morning in the UK. Times move on eh?

  • Reminds me of simpler times.. Hot summer days, dirt roads, tobacco barns, and music being played by family.

  • wow these guys are great whole new kind of cool

  • Pure talent, period!

  • They played WMMT just after I could no longer make that long drive down for my show or the jam. Man! I just hate it that I missed them.

  • Love this group. I think some jug parts were ripped off Brisco Darling. "Got time to breath, got time for music...Stevieboy

  • Absolutely love this group, hope to see them soon. ( However, I think the jug player ripped off Brisco Darling on some of this). "Got time to breath, got time for music"

    stevieboy

  • Now that's Music !! True Artist Playin' cuz they have to !! I love Rhianna(sp) !!PEACE JIM

  • I used to hate this kind of music growing up. But now I can really get into this it is great to I KNOW that some young black musicians are carrying on this rich legacy that few Blacks even acknowledge much less appreciate.

  • @tonirob1015

It's funny how this music seems to have become the property of rural white people, but it's a music that came from blacks and whites.

It IS good to see someone black reclaiming part of their heritage.

  • I also heard you on NPR yesterday in the car. Love your sound and the fact that you're keeping this music alive. Will be buying CD right away.

  • I heard you all on fresh air on NPR tonight and had to look you up on YouTube. I truly love your music and will definitely purchase your new cd. Keep up the good work.

  • Raw talent transcends all stereotype. Keep jammin' Chocolate Drops.

  • I can't wait until my CD comes in the mail from these guys!

  • He is blowin the jug you fukin pratt

  • @spencersteak great to know there is jug experts out there

    where are your youtube demos

  • i dont have any yet. i still need to get a camera.i just record on a 4-track.but im in the process of getting one and shooting some videos

  • Wow. Is there an instrument this woman can't play??

  • the girl sure looks cherokee too.

  • If you haven't listened to 'Hit Em Up' please do.,

  • Big ups CCD!

  • GOOD STUFF 5 STARS

  • Amazing and empowering. Very interesting phenomena going on here: young African Americans accepting and appreciating Black American traditions that have been previously viewed as racist steretypes. A similar thing is happeing with 18 year old, Noni Carter's new book, "Good Fortune."

  • Georgia Buck !!!

  • This is absolutely fantastic! Thank you.

  • Great fiddle and singing and the banjo gal delivers a magic, foot-stomping performance on the 5 string.

This is an absolutely 5 star video by the CCD's. Thanks for the post.

BTW what's the name of this tune.... Same as the band ??

  • I must say that I'm not very into country/ southern music, but this is worthy of more than 5 stars. Absolutely beautiful.

  • If you ever feel the need to see a truly great show then you must see the Carolina Chocolate Drops! They will without a doubt blow you away. I saw the at the Bijou in Knoxville a couple weeks ago and I am still smiling and stomping my feet.

  • AWESOME

  • Wonderful! Thank you!

  • they are GREAT !!!!!

  • This is old time music pre-dates the modern bluegrass by some 50+yrs and more but it's still folk grassroots music. In other words is the daddy of the bluegrass....

  • Bluegrass predates the blues we know and black/white folks borrowed each others songs so there was so much cross fertilisation. The banjo is perfect result of an instrument that was introduced from african-americans

  • Actually Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass, was influenced by the Blues, an American musical genre that came about via gospel/spiritual songs, work field songs and holler songs of black Americans/ex-slaves post-American Civil War. So the Blues were around at least 30 years before Monroe was born.

  • Blues always been around, one way or other.

  • Wow. Just left South Carolina's Boone Hall Bluegrass Festival. Can't say enough about these guys. They are such a rare group of musicians. Trying to give a description of them is impossible as there is nothing I've come across to give a comparison to. One word here folks.....TALENT. They KNOW what they are about. I love we have been gifted with them sharing our unique history of the universal language of music. Many thanks Carolina Cho1colate Drops. You have many new fans

  • How anyone can say that this band is not bluegrass or 'historically inaccurate' is beyond me...this is one of the most AUTHENTIC bluegrass/string bands I've ever heard and they kick ass!

  • Well i have to disagree . Maybe we need to remind ourselves the difference between bluegrass( been around since the 1940s) and old-time fiddle music (around for centuries) They are great musicians nevertheless, I just wanted to get that across

  • Fluff, after hearing the CCD talk about their own music, I realized what your saying is absolutley right....they themselves do not call it bluegrass...really just stringband music....a combination of genre's.thanks for taking me to school on this....

  • You can beat a good fiddle and banjo and the old jug - you don't need a bass fiddle when you have it. I love the old claw hammer style this young lady is using and her banjo playing is terrific. All three of these musicians are great and, as has been mentioned in posts on other videos of theirs, they make lots of music with few instruments. Thanks so much for posting. - Paula

  • The Carolina Chocolate Drops are unique in that they've managed to create their own style of old time with a conglomeration of instruments and sounds that aren't necessarily historically "accurate"....their music has the ability to transcend genre and become something alive and present.

  • Can you explain WTF you're talking about without the bombastic language?

  • please, your comment is the equivalent to the ruining of an erection

  • Yes, who would have thought of putting a fiddle, a banjo, and a jug together?

    Total anachronism.

  • lol. the music is awesome, but (i have to admit) so is your comment.

  • I love this music too! I just don't know why anyone would say that they aren't historically accurate.

  • @screwyou only if you don't know the chronology

  • They are completely awesome. My enjoyment of this video was tempered only by my nonstop fear that the banjo player was going to get her eye poked out by the fiddle player's bow!

  • wish they would come to the u.k,all they got out here are pop bands and manufactured bands that cant even play ,not all though

  • they came to my school today which is east lawrence midddle school. they will also be coming to the chicken and egg festival in moulton alabama april 19 if your a big carolina choclate drops fan!

  • What is title of this song?

  • georgia buck

  • I like her frailing style my kinda band.

  • As great as they are on video, they are ten times better live. We saw them in concert last night. They combined extraordinary showmanship with dazzling musicianship to deliver one of the most if not THE most exciting concert we've ever experienced. Do NOT miss them when they come to your town!

  • Sublime! I love this, thank you!

  • awesome awesome awesome !!!!

  • this is a string band, they are NOT blue grass...they specifically stated this when i saw them perform on tuesday

  • THIS IS THE SOUND! The Carolina Chocolate Drops are Gods!

  • I THis is some good sh*t... I would love to see them live

  • This is fantastic!

  • mighty fine!

  • oh man- never actually seen someone play the jug before. thats unreal

  • LOVE this music - what took me so long to find it? :)

I will try to find album.

  • God I love them

  • They are the best!

  • Id like to learn to play jug, that looks fun, like beat boxing with a jug...

  • Just saw the Carolina Chocolate Drops for the first time. I have not heard a voice with the power of Rhiannon since a young Mary Travers.

Look forward to more of her

  • I LOVE THIS JUG BAND!!! thank you for keeping this wonderful music alive.

  • This is such an awesome group! They were great on the Grand Ole Opry playing this song.

  • I think I done found my new favorite bluegrass band!

  • You just found your favorite OLD TIME band. These folks are in no way shape or form a bluegrass band. That is an affront to both bluegrass and these fine musicians.

  • They are old time but I think saying it is an affront is overspeaking, it's just a mistake. A pretty common one at that.

  • I stand by my statement. I believe it IS an insult to call this bluegrass, mostly to the CCD and Old Time, less so to bluegrass.

  • What's wrong with bluegrass? I love old time and bluegrass. I have never encountered an old-time elitist.

  • I'm not an elitist. In fact I love BG and OT too. This is just NOT bluegrass, which is a very specific genre, and these folks here are certainly not trying to be bluegrass. Know any OT musicians? Ask THEM if this is bluegrass or old time. There's really a lot of differences, and if you want to educate yourself, do some research, there isn't enough room for me to do it for you here.

  • You are missing my point. I know the difference, but calling them bluegrass, wrong as it may be, is not an insult. I am sure if you called most old time musicians bluegrass that they would explain the difference between their music and bluegrass. It makes no sense to consider it an insult.

  • if musicians worried about semantics as much as yall do they wouldnt be able to play nothing.

  • Well, I AM a musician, and the only reason I responded in the first place is because I DO play bluegrass AND old time, and players of either of those genres DO make a point about the differences between the two. That includes the father of bluegrass himself Bill Monroe. I didn't create the various genres that music falls into - that was a record exec's doings. Like I said, there isn't room here for educating the masses but there are plenty of online resources to search. I'm done here.

  • Right on.

  • If you know the lyrics to the song, please someone post them. I can get some of it, but I would really like to know all of it. Thanks.

  • ive ordered the album after watching jools, w hmv would not post it!!

  • saw these guys on the jools holland show very impressed

  • SO right!

  • steve from London just loves u guys and your music

  • djsilage, the bottle in old days was known as the jug, hence the name jug band, so if a band played one of these they would probably b known as a jug band!

    says brother jbbutterfield

  • GREAT!!! 5-STARS

  • I too saw this group at the Ryman and really enjoyed them! GREAT JOB GUYS!!

  • Just saw you all at the Ryman Auditorium ( The Old Grand Ole Opry) Great Job! Kick Ass!

  • Just saw you guys on Grand Ole Opry! AWESOME!!

  • sorry for appearing ignorant, but I can't work out what that bottle is for? What sound is it making???

    thanks

  • The jug is playing the bass line. Sounds like a "Voomp" and hard to make out on this recording.

Man this is such a great group.

  • the jug is sort of hard to hear, but it's making a "swooshy" kind of bass sound. I love jug bands and these guys are my favorites!

  • disregard that , i now know

  • does anyone know the name of this tune?

  • "Georgie Buck."

Old-time tunes are often known by many different names, but "Georgie Buck" is the name that I am most familiar with associated with this tune.

  • ahh thank you for your response, i found out though by illegally acquiring this tune..shame on me

  • actually i think its something like "went back in and got shot"

  • that line sounds more clear on a couple other versions

  • i think its "he walked in and got shot"

  • Can someone translate the third verse for me?

Here is what I have so far:

    Right on this spot

    ?????????? and got shot

Right at this bar room door

Oh Lordy me, Oh Lordy my

    Trouble I'm goin' see

    Mike

  • it's, "poor black annie got shot"

  • That's cool. Don't hear too many jug players anymore.

  • ya'll are awesome......I love the banjo, fiddle, and the jug. I grew up listening to this type of music on Friday and Saturday nights in south Mississippi......I am only 44 yrs old, but we had this type of music for entertainment....clean and fun!!!......thanks for posting this video......will continue to view!!!!!

They are unbelievable in concert, they play the old instruments and pass on the old music. Also, they try to introduce the original musicians who wrote, played and performed this music to the public. Thanks Queen for an excellent share! Nancy
