I have to tell you that G. Kraft is the best host you can even imagine. I had a chance to go on the Dreams yacht and watch the Sarasota Races. We had a blast with all the gals on the front of the Yacht.
The 1999 APBA Offshore Worlds in St. Pete had about 120 Offshore Race Teams.
YES there were Rich Guys, but most were just like YOU, with their entire family helping with everything. And the risk of being killed is very high. So don't be critical, be proud of these Warriors... because they race for EGO gratification, and the awesome experience involved.
No one has gotten rich racing boats, the Winnings are less than the costs...
SBI/APBA Offshore Powerboat racing is AWESOME, and scary...
None of these guys have money...just like other motorsports, these are just middle class guys scraping to get by but lucky enough to land big sponsorships....NONE of these guys have money!! Are you freaking stupid...know what you're talking about before you open your mouth dude!
Mroffshore, I've been thinking about this and you're probably right. We just have different ideas of "middle class".
Most of my racing has been done in boats or vehicles that cost way less than my annual salary. If someone chooses to participate in racing that costs more, hope they can justify it to wife and family.
Hey, I was just bust'n your chops...that is one of the problems with offshore racing, he who spends the most usually wins. The APBA of the early 2000's made efforts to change that but ruled with an iron fist...then owners took over the classes and then you just have a conflict of interest any way you slice it...Good to talk with you!!
Actually Mr. Offshore, some of these guys DO have money.
Take for instance Bill McComb, former national/world champion SuperVEE. Driver of the Pier 57 Fountain.
Before landing sponsorship with Joe Boxer and Patron he financed his entire team out of his own pocket. I know this because I am good friends with his son and also him.
What you say is mostly true... He is pretty crazy and spent over 3 million a year keeping that boat competitive.
Chris in Hidden Agenda landed on its bottom after striking the side of Tommy Bahama and ripping a long area on her rear side area above the water line. Chris and his Driver were fine... a little fiberglass patchup and both boats continued in future races. hey Chris, howsit? these guys are tough.
checkout my old partner Nigel Hook, I believe that he was there in Norway? Google him, his Lucas Oil Red Skater SuperVee has been defeating my other friend Sir Reggie TEAM, and trust me, Sir Reggie owns all the titles... and since I am a Viking at heart, I wish I was there to see it.
YES, I stand corrected, nice to see Nigel in a great Mike Fiore OuterLimits race boat, TalkStory owned 2 OuterLimits in our time. And Joe Sgro is one of the most experienced Offshore racers in the business, all the best...
I just uploaded TalkStory's OuterLimits passing Joe with Dick Lazzara at the wheel in Key West in 99. Both of our boats were at least a lap ahead of everyone in our respective classes at the time, the video shows how aggressive Dick and Gene were... the next SBI 1999 race was Deerfield Beach where we crashed...
Wow, that was almost a really bad situation, there's some luck for ya!

Dude, I've been the boat biz for thirty yrs, the racing scene for 40 yrs. Miss Geico's owner is a drywaller?
The smaller classes I understand are manned by "normal" guys.
I know how much this stuff costs.
Nice handle, "MrOffshore".
