  • Beautiful song. I was just in Big Sur last week. It looks pretty much the same.

  • what the f&ck is with everybody bowing down before this commie joan baez anyway?jeezus, its like she some kind of queen or sumpin.funny thing is ,within 10 years her and her commie loving buddies became the ESTABLISHMENT their heads full of mush tried to overthrow.all of 'em.THEYRE JUST AS MONEY HUNGRY AND GREEDY AS EVERYBODY ELSE.,except now they dont share their dope! That fraud arlo guthrie still makes money off his fake hippy gig.FRAUDS.ALL OF THEM.HER OLD MAN SHOULVE BEEN IN JAIL,OR SHOT.

  • @fpopee I AM WITH YOU!!!I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER,EXCEPT I AM A VIETNAM VETERAN.I ONLY ASK THAT THE DRAFT COME BACK!!EVERYONE MUST SERVE,IF YOU LOVE AMERICA YOU WILL JOIN THE MILITARY AND SERVE HER FOR 4YEARS AT LEAST.

    THANKS

  • @FlauntussFloyd I was 6 years old and living at Gorda while this was happening. What you are asking for is available every day I head down to the Haight and play with everyone who will play. Get a guitar, carry it with you everywhere and play everywhere you go. This is still available to everyone with a heart. That's all it takes. mchivers_@_tusd.net (drop the underscores)

  • The song is called: A Song for David.

You find it on several Joan Baez CD's

  • I went off to fight for my country.NO REGRETS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • whats that song??

  • thanks for background story @frankie28web :) btw everyone's clothes are so colorful and interesting. beautiful

  • Having been raised on Joan, CSNY, and come to the 2 in the morning hot springs here, this is a special place and I can feel the energy of all who came before

  • The circumstances of the song and the emotion she shows in singing it give this performance a real sense of pathos. I feel for her.

  • I'm amazed at the solace of the crowd. It wasn't like a concert is now. Those people were there to relax and feel good. I understand there will never be a big demand for folks music, but I wish someone would try to duplicate something like this. While it could never be replicated, I think a very relaxing picnic could be organized. I bet some old hippies would be game, let old hippies in free and make younger people pay. I'd gladly pay for an event like this.

  • @imthefrogman It just goes to show you that you cant speak your mind.I am with you100%.I am waiting to get my comment hidden.Like wow.Now i know where the people that will sing songs for my country they hide up their ass!!!!!!!!!Bring back the draft!!!!!!!!!!

  • I am just captivated by her voice

  • joans voice is not of this world

  • Not many singers give me goosebumps.

Joan is high on the list

  • Beautiful song

  • i listened to Joan Baez quite a lot the last few days. I like her very much but sometimes I wonder if she used this vibrato voice thing a little too much.

  • Baez wrote this song for her husband and father of her child, David Harris, who was imprisoned because of draft resistance for 15 month. Some people may be bored, I'm touched...

  • @frankie28web It's sad he later was heard to say that it was worse to be in prison, and that he would have been better off in the service. They split shorty after he was released.

  • Thanks god for this song

  • This is like heaven on earth...

  • Beautiful, self deprecating woman introduces this lovely song as a "mediocrity". Funny and sad.

    We have more mediocrity now.

  • Does anybody know... - if Joan, Joni and Melanie ever performed at the same time?

  • Don't think so: both Joans at Big Sur. Joan Baez and Melanie were at Woodstock, but Joni Mitchell had a TV appearance. Like them all.

  • There was a well known photo showing Joan, Joni, Judy Collins and Mimi Farinia (and I think Mama Cass too) at a later Newport (probably '67 or '68) jamming together onstage, though I don't now what song they were singing, or if whatever they were singing was ever recorded.

  • this melted my hot heart. go hug a tree organisms........

Peter from Germany, remembering my trip from San Francisco to San Diego.

  • Body?

  • Yes, body.

  • Joan Baez wasn't my favorite folk singer but she does have an amazing voice!! She can sing or does sing anywhere she pleases! Such a beautiful video! Amazing celebration this is!

    Great post, thank you!

  • Joan Baez introduces this lovely song as a "musical mediocrity" dedicated to her husband David.

  • A belief that there is no hope, and that the end of the world is coming has existed throughout the ages.(Always some guy foretelling "The end is nigh".) Young people in particular who have not experienced catastrophe and survived it, are prone to this delusion. There is nothing new under the sun. It has all happened before. Just read history. Each generation must pick up its tools and try to deal with the mess left by its parents, however hard that is. This is the cycle of life, not escapism

  • How did we get to the places we've come to in our lives, we boomer idealists? Thanks for posing that question, Johnmcd7. "Through the same troubled waters we carry our times". All the flowers that we planted will bloom. Look at the little boy running in the video, and the babe in its mother's arms. Innocence and hope are reborn in every generation, thank God. Congrats on surviving the tough times. Keep going to those rallies. The stars in your sky are the stars in mine.

  • their is no hope, escapism wont save any of us. the end of the world is coming.

  • VERY CLASSY "BATIK" TYE DYING a former 'Counter -Culture' Craft that has apparently been lost...to time. I Suppose,Somewhere(Outside of CHINA...for WAL-MART INC.) Its' Being DONE!

  • Ha ha ha ha u old hippies r funny,in a nice way))

  • I look out at the crowd watching and listening to Joan, and I think I see the faces of so many that I've seen at Obama rallies, and Hillary rallies. I wonder how we got to the places we've come to in our lives, and how we've survived through the years. For me, Joan has gotten me through so many tough times, so much sadness, so many joys and triumphs. Always there, always bringing pure spirit and grace to those moments...

  • her hair looks cute

  • What a beautiful song. She has the most glorious voice. Riveting.

  • Voice of the angels...I've sat on that same deck many times eating breakfast, but I missed her that day. And David Crosby. And Steven Stills. Graham Nash. John Sebastian.

I was probably at home washing my car...

  • sorry, i meant, what's the problem if she was a communist

  • what if she was a communist! this was a music festival, we don't give a damn about the rest

  • If she is a communist, that communist can fucking sing!

  • consumers out of here

  • If there was ever a biopic on her, Julianne Moore no doubt would play her. Or Shelley Duvall! Moore's character in I'm Not There is actually based on Baez, so...

  • I think Jennifer Beals could do a good job if anyone did a Biopic.

  • That's true and it when you consider their similarity she is more appropriate than Moore. She deserves a biopic!

  • yeah she did a great job

i saw her and she started talking and i was like "joan baez"

  • wow, I love this song for so many years ... very surprizing to see great video!! Thanks for sharing Joans song!!!!

  • Fun! My wife was watching this and found a segment of me with my mom! (the little kid with no shirt on with mom scratching my back). Thanks for that memory! Chad

  • Your mom was a beautiful lady.

  • No way! I totally swear that I just watched this again and wondered what might be going on with that kid now. It's just how I think. And here you are, huh? That is so cool.

  • Hold up. Your profile says you are 36 and you just joined last June. That means you would have been no older than -1 at the Big Sur Folk Festival of 1969. That kid looks more like 5 than -1. What did you do to look so much older?

  • Our home in Big Sur was one of those little hot spots where musicians would gather, and someday I am going to write about growing up there...wild...in Big Sur. Joan Baez, or David Crosby etc. and my dad playing guitar until the wee hours of the morning... It was a pretty magical time. It all changed in the mid seventies when I was about 10 and the "Jesus Movement" swept through Big Sur...everyone got "saved" and about 30 families all moved out of BS together to straighten out....

  • So you are not really 36? Your profile says you are. If what you are saying is true, that's really awesome.

  • Nope. Just turned 44. Sorry about the profile, I think my wife did that as a "discretion" thing. We didnt know much about this site or security. But, anyways, yep, that was me and my mom. She is still just as beautiful!

  • I have never heard her sing this song before. Simply beautiful and deeply profound. Thank you for posting the video.

  • Heh! Good question! My wife created our log-in just so that I could comment on this video (we are not big users of this site). She was probably nervous about website security. I was born in 1963 so that would make me 6 in that clip. I remember lots about that festival, including working at a "sand candle" booth and making/selling these weird hippy candles. I am a public school principal now....

  • David is David Harris, her husband at the time. She wrote several songs about their relationship and they divorced in 1973.

Thanks for bringing this concert to YouTube. I saw it very early on a Sunday morning three years ago and haven't been able to find it on any media.

  • Can anyone tell me who "David" is?

and hey! thanks for bringing woodstock to a "afterwoodstockborn" person like me..

  • What a beautiful song, and what a beautiful lady!!!

  • The title of it is "A Song for David".

  • She recorded it on her I LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME album, which came out a few months later, in early 1970.

  • Cool. Thanks. I have a lot of her CD's, but not that one. I want her entire collection.

  • Great song, does anybody know the name of the song by any chance? Thx for posting this!!! :)

  • Joan Baez, you are so incredible!!! You are the queen of folk and of all music! You are the greatest!!!

  • Thank you for posting these videos. They're bringing back many wonderful memories. Joan's voice and guitar playing symbolize that time for me probably more than anything else.
