I live in the Southern Gulf islands and it was the most snow here since 1916. I recorded a snow depth of 28.5" inches at my place. Although the temperatures weren't that cold, the snow kept piling up. I hate snow!!
i was quite young at this time. i recall being able to crawl on the top crust of the snow caused by melting and re-freezing. it was a paradise for me! i could have made a snow fort anywhere!
thanks for the memories, and for keeping track of our city's history.
I also remember the blizzard of '96 and I also remember that they opened up the one essential service needed by New Years Eve- The Liquor Store! I lived on Richmond, behind Shelbourne Plaza, ans I remeber the grocery store being closed for several days because no food could be delivered, but the 7-11 was open, and although they were out of the staples eg bread, milk, etc, they were giving away free coffee...funny the things you remember, btw, my car was also buried with only the antenna visible
I bought all the sandwiches that they had at the Mac's on Burnside and Douglas because all the things to make sandwiches were old out :) I was offered the New year's Eve shift but I declined, knowing that with the roads only half open getting around in a taxi and trying to make money would be a joke. It turns out I was right...
After having shovelled out the driveway, which took 4 hours and two shovels, the plow came by...I hate when ppl in Ontario whine about that...let THEM try doing THAT after 4 feet of snow! lol
i remember the winter of 96 i was just 8 years old when that happed lol my dad use his shot gun and a little dynamite to blast the snow out of the driveway nothing worked. the best part of al was no school for a month i a tented tillicum school back then now i am 19 and still remember the winter of 96
Last night definitely gave my spirits a lift. I was driving in it the whole time getting fares from downtown to Langford and back... It was most enjoyable and even calming. My stress went away as soon as it started sticking to the ground...
that was awesome, i remember trying to find our car... it was impossible. and watching the plows dump snow over and over again behind our townhouses while we sat inside warm and dry with hot chocolate and baking bread :) i remember walking to the gas station overlooking town... and it was... silent... beautiful :)
Great vid. I remember that winter oh so well. I live in the Southern Gulf Islands and at my location I had a snow depth of 28.5" inches in total. The deepest single snowfall since the Winter of 1916.
Ahh Yes... I remember finally using my snow-blower I'd brought with me from Manitoba, and my SkiDoo that I normally use up on Mount Washington! Police came and borrowed it as I'm not allowed to drive it on the road, but they are??? Hmmmmm
Brings back great memories! Everything came to a standstill. Dozens of people were walking up the middle of Gorge Rd. to get their groceries. It felt like the 1900`s, I kept waiting for a horse and sleigh to go by. Everyone stopped to talk and share coffee or hot chocolate and share stories, it seemed to bring everyone together. Ìt was so quiet too, all you could hear in Oak Bay were the seals barking. Thanks for this!
I believe the snow removal equipment was sold to Nanaimo. They had three dump trucks with plough blades bolted to their undercarriages. The first one cleared the way, the second followed exactly in his tracks, and the third followed in the tracks of the other two. It was evident that they didn't have a clue...
The same thing happens here on Vancouver Island. It's just like the UK. That's why '96 was so special! Back in Montreal it would be business as usual, and I didn't understand what all the fuss was about when the whole place shut down for a whole week...
Heh. Over here they're very appreciative if a cab shows up in the snow at all! Even if I'm an hour or two late they want to hug me and shake my hand! You see, snow doesn't happen often here, and the locals can't drive even on dry pavement, so a plain old Montreal boy becomes an instant hero!
Oh, c'mon it's just a bit of white stuff! I even had customers help push up the steeper grades and they still paid me! I need another three days like that just about now!
@MaddDogg81 The actual parliament building are in Ottawa but in almost every province the legislature is called the parliament buildings.

The snow didn't bother me... I grew up with it in Montreal. What floored me was how so many people didn't know what to do with it...

Is that 3 feet of snow!?!?
SevereTstormFan 3 years ago
4 feet in some places, and drifting up to five or even six!
fehquig 3 years ago
that is amazing, the most I ever got in New Jersey was 2 feet, and that happens maybe twice or three times a decade.
SevereTstormFan 3 years ago
That was our thirty year storm going by people's recollections.
If we get snow here it's usually six inches or less. We did get about a foot in December, but even that is rare...

This piled up agaist our window and made it start to crack. Grandmother flipped out making us dig the snow away off the window.

Hope you didn't crack it some more with your shovels... Entire roofs caved in! My suite flooded, being a basement suite...

Victoria definitely is beautiful! Next time I go there, I want to visit the Provincial Museum and the aquarium! AND my old neighbours!
It was one of those times where everyone is SO GLAD there are cabbies around! Been in the same situation here in Zurich before X-mas 2001.
Was 1996 the year they had "misplaced" the snow-plough?

We have an aquarium?
