I agree completely with many of the comments here that Monster was hugely underrated. Wasn't it said at one point that it was written in response to Cobain's death? Well either way, great record. It also warms my heart to see Bill Berry. When he left the band you could feel the absence, in my opinion.
i think monster is very under rated. a lot of people go on how they went down hill as soon as signed for WB but i think the run of automatic, monster, new adventures and up was their best run. All were totally different sounding records but each fantastic. although id say murmur is my fav id take these albums over any other IRS record.
This is a Beautiful powerful statement the band made here, Thumbsup to you guys, also the actors in this video played their parts PERFECTLY to emphasize the point of this song and I agree, it pains me that such things happen
*edit* Awesome Air guitar there at 2.10 - gotta be buck right?

Two fun trivia facts about this song: Stipe has said several times that he is "meant to be singing as a girl." Also, this was the song R.E.M. was performing when Bill Berry had his on stage aneurysm on the Monster tour. One of my favs.
Fans of this search Strawberry Jam NeonDCL, a song by a then 14 now 15 year-old girl(who i reckon has never heard this song and prolly is pretty much unfamiliar with R.E.M. in general) with a kinship to this song, this ain't no spam, i bet Michael himself would be a fan if he ever heard it.
This reminds me of high school in 1994. Being a nerd who kept to himself and being both envious of my friend who was sexually active and at the same time spin-tinglingly disgusted by the various horrible girls he was sexually active with.
I'm disgusted that Tongue isn't a more popular well, known song. If it had been released in the 1960s it would have rightly been regarded as a classic of the decade. Why it isn't known and loved by more people is a mystery. It's both sincere and yet also fitting in with the themes of Monster as a whole.
@andyowl76 I have been a fan of R.E.M. since Reckoning. I bought it when it came out because my local radio station played Pretty Persusasion. I was one of those who poo-pooed Monster. I have finally begun to get into this excellent album. I think now that they have called it quits this album will be re-evaluated as better than most remember. I think it was such a departure from Out of time and Automatic. In any case this is one of my fav's from the album. And great promo vid as well ...as if..

...that sad, epochal roller-rink feel is threaded throughout 'Monster'... it's like wistfulness with a pulse

Is the video footage of the band performing & singing from the "Road Movie"? Sure looks like it, but haven't watched the DVD for a while.
