@mejt223 If they recycle and refurbish them like they plan on doing they'll work. Works fine in my Volt so far, hasn't blown up yet, nor do I expect it to...all the plug-in's now coming out also have lithium. They might come out with some other battery form in the future to replace it though....
I always envision the future of humanity becoming a Steam punk future, where we have harnessed the power of hydro power and have managed to produce things like steel and other technological advances without oil with a more sustainable future but that kind of advancement won't be with our life times and most likely will not be around for several thousand years at the rate we are going.
What will cause American military to no longer be able to enforce the trading of oil in U.S. currency? I've seen a news report that recently India bought oil from Iran with gold. Do you think this will continue? Despite my focus being on preparing for an end to accessible oil, I'd love to have a better understanding of why the U.S. will or perhaps already is losing ability to carry on with military tactics. For several years I've been amazed at the low price of gasoline and the value of U.S. $
Thanks so much for responding to my question! I appreciate it.
Just a clarification though, if gas approaches 5,6,7,etc dollars per gallon anyway, would you still add the tax? The tax dollars could be used to aggressively implement rail transportation and support vital programs, but it could deepen the pain of taxpayers.
@poltoja Yes, I'd add the tax regardless of price so we'd be forced to methodically change away from the cheap oil growth dependent economy we have to a post peak oil no growth future which is more in line with our energy reality... Just $5 per gallon would cripple the states because we are the most oil addicted society in the world and thus have the farthest to fall or need to change etc...
I was under the impression that a vast majority of transport ,factories, procedures that use oil, could be replaced with an alternative, electricity over time by changing the systems in question to accept electricity ( motors in stead of engines for example) . So what your saying is that even if we could magically produce electricity very cheaply through nuclear fusion power plants, it is useless for many things that require oil? you mention medication as one example. darn it , im confused.: (
@rainbowsalads You're not confused, you're getting it. Now you see that, say electric motors, they take oil to make because you use oil to mine the ore, ship the ore, manufacture the parts, heat the metals etc... No one has told me something man made that oil isn't involved in.... find something man made that is in your home that cheap oil wasn't involved in and I'd be surprised...
I would change most of the STOP signs out for Red and Yellow Yield signs. I would also start a trolley system on interstate systems to give people options vs driving their cars. I would also start a passenger license system that was digital with the passengers quirks to promote carpooling. If a passenger has proven to be a sound passenger they should be able to be transported the transporter could get a discount on fuel when they transport passengers in that system.
Ending Sewer and other infrastructure subsidies for new suburbs is preferred to creating new programs for urban growth. Ethanol and corn subsidies need to be eliminated simultaneously. Ethanol subsidies were only intended to give the industry a boost, ending this will test its viability. A gasoline tax would be a ratinoal way of paying for the wars that just ended(doesn't anyone see the connection?) Food stamp recipients could be rewarded for growing their own food w/ a buy back program.
The lithium battery will NEVER work for cars. Do you agree with that Mr.EnergyCzar or not?

@LtSgt5 We'd have to find a way to remove and process minerals from the ground without machines...seems unlikely to do it with electricity....

Would it be a good idea to invest in areas prime for generating hydroelectric power or places with a hydroelectric infrastructure already in place?

However do to the increase in gas if you made it $4.00 all the solar would go up to

Great crop suggestions and explanation as to why the alternatives won't let us continue the same way.
