@FayTodd16 you mean the first bit of this clip? It's an old irish song called "An Maighdean Mhara" which means: "The Memaid"... it's roughly about the legends of selkies, you know the seals that can turn into humans when they shed their skin. Clannad has done another interpretation of this song, maybe you can find the lyrics this way :)
oh, sorry, my bad, you meant the monks :) well THAT I think is a fake latin gibberish... to make it sound mysterious. Someone correct me if I am wrong!
wow i didnt know the full meaning of the story, i heard it once when I was little by my greatgrandmother but i couldnt remember. I love this work, i used to take classes and got pretty good at it until my knees gave out
I'm a teacher of ancient studies, including history, mythology and languages. I even met Michael Flatley years ago and he helped me on my Celtic mythology thesis.
The love interests of the Lord of the Dance represent Cerridwen of the Dagda or the Moon Goddess. Danu or the Mother of the Gods. Last but not least Morrigan or Macha the Great Queen, patroness of priestesses and witches. Sexuality is her strength over males. The Little Spirit is perhaps the most powerful deity in the show. She is the balance between good and evil. She is the Tuatha De Danaan. Lord Dorcha is Arawn the King of Hell or the Night, he is vengeance, terror and war.
I actually had a year of premed when I attended the University of Cincinnati, then I joined the Marines. After that, I lost my desire for medicine and decided to focus on ancient history and languages (my second love next to the sciences). I attended UC for 5 years and now I work as a teacher and interpreter. I think you would make a wonderful doctor and you can always learn ancient history and languages on the side.
@kalimaganeshshivan wow sounds very good! I love history and always have done but I love biology and chem. and phy. too. I want to treat people and I have that kind of caring instinct. I am doing a latin GCSE and really enjoy it so it can still be a passion. Thank you for saying I would make a wonderful doctor, thats really kind!
@HighonBoots I can't remember their names. I had a major crush on Gillian though. That dark hair and beautiful eyes made me want to rush the stage! I had to keep myself in check!
@kalimaganeshshivan Sarah Brightman is a singer, most famous for her role in the original cast of the Phantom of the Opera as Christine. Gillian reminds me of the way Sarah looks in her earlier days
@HighonBoots the blonde is Bernadette Flynn .. amazing dancer! she's still doing Saoirse in troupe 1 for lord of the dance (: and she married the man who now does the lord of the dance, damien o'kane :D
@crimsonclover87 The monks represent the early Druid priests of the Celts, however to some people, they may also represent Christian monks, depending upon their mindset.
@kalimaganeshshivan thank you! i think it's kind of both because a lot of modern catholicism is a combination of old druid beliefs adopted by the catholic church to "convert the druid savages". thanks again, though. i like learning about all the different cultures and what various things represent
@kalimaganeshshivan quick question. is it also possible that Colleen and Morrigan's rivalry could also be pulled from Swan Lake and the struggle between odette and odile?
@crimsonclover87 You have to remember that Colleen and Morrigan are flip sides of the same coin or the double goddess concept (triple goddess if there was a crone (elder witch) involved). Odette and Odile in Swan Lake are to separate entities. Odette has been put under an enchantment (transmogrification into a swan) while Odile is being used to beguile Prince Siegfried disguised as Odette. Morrigan is bold and flaunts her sexuality for "The Lord of the Dance" while Colleen is demure & shy.
@kalimaganeshshivan true. i just meant the dichotomy of the characters. it seems to pop up in myths and stories that are heavily rooted in the Hero's Journey. there's one woman who's good and pure of heart and truly loves/deserves to win the hero's heart and one who is more sensual and uses her promiscuity to control/entice the hero. it just seems to pop up a lot to me, that's all
@crimsonclover87 Yes you're right. In the Arthurian legends, you'll find the same rivalry with the goddess Min (The Lady of the Lake) and Morrigana (Yes, the same Morrigan in "The Lord of the Dance"). You even find this same theme in modern stories such as the James Bond novels.
@kalimaganeshshivan i did catch the Arthurian reference with Morrigan's name. i must admit, it is pretty cool to see that Mr. Flateley did his homework when he created this. i think that's part of it's appeal. everyone can watch it and wonder where they've heard about/seen this story before
The High Priests represent the Druids or ancient Celts who basically kept the faith. In this case Beltane. The Lord of the Dance is Cernunnos or the Green Man who is of the Wild Nature but is also a Sun god. He is represented in some way or form throughout Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa and Asia. In India he is called Shiva Nataraja which also means Lord of the Dance. He is also Lord Krishna in South India and in Greece he is Apollo or Helios. Flatley did his homework when he created this.
@kalimaganeshshivan it seems that you also did your homework.... For us in Hellas (Greece for the ignorant) Apollon is a northern God.He is blond with pale skin and every winter he withdraws to norhtern lands untill the coming of spring when he comes back to us, to teach us the fun of singing, dancing, drinking and the reincarnation of earth and her elements....
@elnam32 Thank you. The very traits that you mentioned are also attributed to Dionysus from Hellas to the Eastern lands as far as Persia and India. Singing, dancing, drinking, merry making and the Fall/Winter harvest celebrations from the ancient times until now (Halloween,Christmas & New Year) are all related. Soon my family and I will be celebrating Nowruz, which is the Ancient Persian New Year. It has many elements that were taken by the Christianized Easter and Christmas celebrations.
If anyone is wondering why this act is just like the beginning act. The first act represents the morning dawn, with Flatley's character representing the rising sun. This act represents midday. The last act represents Flatley's character being sacrificed to the night or Lord Dorcha, before he is resurrected as the rising sun once again. The Lord of the Dance is mythology based on the solar and lunar deities. The Egyptian Book of the Dead with Osiris and Seth or Cernunnos and Arawn.
