I didn't think the movie was that bad for a kids' movie, but it shouldn't have been a kids movie. Still, the Lord Of The Rings got made into a cartoon before it was a full-action epic. But then again, the lord of the rings cartoon was brilliant.
The main problem I have with this is the contrast between the CG of the dragons and draconians and the cartoon hand-drawn style of the rest of the characters and background. It just doesn't work, go all one or the other, not half-and-half.
George R.R. Martins', "A Song of Ice and Fire" series is by far is the best high fantasy I've ever read. I highly suggest it to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

Unfortunately for the DND movie and the Dragonlance movie they hired some very bad talent for directing . I realize the budgets on things like this aren't always so big but i think you could still do a good job with less if you hired someone with a talent and knowledge of fantasy.

I agree. That strange combination of the two looks odd. The 3-d animation looks computer gamish and low-tech, and yet it is modern enough to make the 2-d cartoon seem too simplistic.
Despite that, I have to admit: I'll probably watch all three.

Ive read nearly every single dragon lance book out there, from the test of the twins to the the tale of Huma....and I can say..this trailer made me cry. If they had done it live action, this would have been so much better. Raistlin wouldn't look almost healthy, they wouldn't have horribly merged 3D animations (at least..God I hope not) It actually reminds me of this old lord of the rings animated movie. they could have at least put effort in the 3D merging like with Titan A.E.
i actually quite liked this movie. A little slow at the start, but it picks up and keeps pace. As for the animation and so called "childish" look. I don't think so. A little i guess, but it works and it works well. Perhaps i'm in it for something else. I just like good story with an epic fantasy side of things. I don't really care what it looks like.
i will admit that when i first watched it, i was wondering how old it was. I thought to myself, i thought this was a newer movie. But after that it didn't really bother me at all. I thought for the most part especially in some parts it looked pretty cool. The occational 3D look was not epic in talent but it worked well i thought. Cause it made you second guess if it was 3d, which is what i think they were going for.

OMG,this is awful. I'm not exactly a fan of Dragonlance (or any D&D novel for that matter),but I don't remember Goldmoon being a badass sorceress. In fact that's why I hated those novels,they were too centered on the character of Tanis.
You know, at least someone even thought about making a movie! ^.^ I just wish they would start from the begining. It would have been MUCH better... and much longer.... But still. I think the animation goes with the books becasue this style(excluding computer animation) was about the style available when the book was published.. so it KINDA goes along.

No offense, but I've seen better when Doctor Who was low budget in the past and that was live action, not animated. From what I've read in the books in this series, I can't be happy of what we do have from this animation. Having it done by Japanese animators would make it so much more believable.

I have to agree. The mixture of 3D rendering with the hand painted cells was poorly blended. I've seen people do more with less money. It practically killed the book for me. The draconians sound horrible! They sound more like human thugs trying to be convincing but far too obvious. I think Lucy and Keifer were the best.

I rented this movie and couldn't even make it half way through. I could have dealt with the crappy animation and out of date computer graphics but they killed the story as well. It was way too rushed. I part of my soul died, me thinks.

That's the sad thing actually, money is the problem. It needs to sell for one, or the people involved won't make anymore dragonlance thinking it's not going to make money. It was sad that they cut some of my favorite parts. The wicker dragon made by the First Dragonarmy Engineers (smile), the bar fight with the dracos where Tika bashes one of them over the head with an iron skillet...(bigger smile)
It's not so bad...! I mean the voices, the actors are GREAT, and this is far more important for me than the animation.
As for the story, well, it'd be better if they'd split the book in to movies as they wished, but it's OK, I guess they did their best with such a low budget. The only thing I really hate about this movie is that they removed Goldmoon's song :-(

I hate it sooo much when they make a film where you have these huge things flying around in the background in terrible 3D graphics, and then you have people in the foreground, running around in 2D. THE CONTRAST IS HORRIBLE AT BEST!!!

Very disappointed. How this can open the door for a future live action film is beyond me. Dragonlace deserved much better than this. the story and characters are amazing to behold, unfortunately when new people try and watch it, they'll be turned off before they have a chance to get drawn in to it. Look at it this way: Lord of the Rings was originally an animated movie. In years to come, this DragonLance could be as epic as the LotR we know. It just takes time,.
1. Rename the movie "Dragonlance : Let's See If We Can Make Ralph Bakshi Look Better". (If you don't know who Ralph Bakshi is, find a clip of his Lord Of The Rings animations, and you'll understand what I mean.)
2. Find all of the copies of this nightmare and bury them somewhere.
3. Let someone responsible make a real movie later, after we've managed to forget the terrifying 2-D/3-D imagery.
Even for a direct-to-video release, the animation looks pretty bad, particularly the CGI stuff. Little kids may think it is fun, but that is about it.
Why can't they do anything right these days? I mean CGI or cell animation: pick one and stick with it! This mix-and-match obscenity just looks completely pathetic.
I think live action would have been best, but even animated this could have been a great movie. However, the fact they chose to outsource to an animation studio in Idia tells me they were just trying to cut cost. It wasn't about the story, it was about money.

Character designs are so-so, but Riverwind and Goldmoon look like cliche barbarian types.
And the the 2-D and 3-D animation clash horribly. It looks like two different movies mashed together. Why not just do one or the other?

OMG,this is awful. I'm not exactly a fan of Dragonlance (or any D&D novel for that matter),but I don't remember Goldmoon being a badass sorceress. In fact that's why I hated those novels,they were too centered on the character of Tanis.

You know, at least someone even thought about making a movie! ^.^ I just wish they would start from the begining. It would have been MUCH better... and much longer.... But still. I think the animation goes with the books becasue this style(excluding computer animation) was about the style available when the book was published.. so it KINDA goes along.

They did a good job from what budget they had. Maybe it'll be like LOTR from the bad animated film to a remarkable and unforgetable one.

No offense, but I've seen better when Doctor Who was low budget in the past and that was live action, not animated. From what I've read in the books in this series, I can't be happy of what we do have from this animation. Having it done by Japanese animators would make it so much more believable.

I have to agree. The mixture of 3D rendering with the hand painted cells was poorly blended. I've seen people do more with less money. It practically killed the book for me. The draconians sound horrible! They sound more like human thugs trying to be convincing but far too obvious. I think Lucy and Keifer were the best.

.... and a budget of $200 million US? Some books just aren`t made to be put into film form, and I have a feeling that this one can`t be done unless its at the same scope as LOTR. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to be done again anytime soon.

Your right, the Dragonlance books have potential to be an amazing movie, but all they got was this crap. Well, Lord of the Rings also had a poorly animated movie made about it in 1978, then around 20 years later they made the new ones. maybe in 20 years they'll make an amazing DragonLance movie.

The standard in animation has been set by the Japanese. They should have this made in Japan.
I know there are other non-japanese animation that are also good. But in my community, its the Japanese that are good with animation.

yeah folks! we all know that this isnt what weve expected. i still hope they will made a real dragonlance movie in the future. maybe a compact story line which begins where raist makes the test of hs. i DONT want to see any of the LOTR-actors in the dragonlance movie. johnny depp is an perfect choice for raistlin. drew fuller isnt the right person for caramon. maybe billy crudup with more muscles. also a good combination is chris bale (raist), crudup (cara)

Kinda like agree with your choice. A few actors I can't picture. But come on! Ms Creepy... ahem, Helena B. Carter as Silvara? She is suppose to be the Hopeless/heart broken/tragic maiden. And also sexy. MJF, Parckinson wont help him steal like a kender. Bloom... nah. No more Legolas. As for R. Majere, Benno Fûrmann (Will Eden, Sin Eater). He has it all: disturbing apearence, penetrating eyes, low-rasp voice. Catherine will make a VERY hot Kitiara (nice choice!). For Tas, Tom Felton (D. Malfoy).

I rented this movie and couldn't even make it half way through. I could have dealt with the crappy animation and out of date computer graphics but they killed the story as well. It was way too rushed. I part of my soul died, me thinks.

I agree, but the hobbits animation was actually good for the time. If i remember right torches actually lit faces and such. I liked the hobbit then, and I didn't die a little when i watched the old version like I did this turd.

I HOPE they tried to give it an "old" feel since the books were written in the 1980's. Like an adult trying to replicate the style of a child's drawing. But they missed. Missed horribly. And it's not so bad it's good, it's so bad it's awful.

That's the sad thing actually, money is the problem. It needs to sell for one, or the people involved won't make anymore dragonlance thinking it's not going to make money. It was sad that they cut some of my favorite parts. The wicker dragon made by the First Dragonarmy Engineers (smile), the bar fight with the dracos where Tika bashes one of them over the head with an iron skillet...(bigger smile)

It's not so bad...! I mean the voices, the actors are GREAT, and this is far more important for me than the animation.
As for the story, well, it'd be better if they'd split the book in to movies as they wished, but it's OK, I guess they did their best with such a low budget. The only thing I really hate about this movie is that they removed Goldmoon's song :-(

I hate it sooo much when they make a film where you have these huge things flying around in the background in terrible 3D graphics, and then you have people in the foreground, running around in 2D. THE CONTRAST IS HORRIBLE AT BEST!!!

Very disappointed. How this can open the door for a future live action film is beyond me. Dragonlace deserved much better than this. the story and characters are amazing to behold, unfortunately when new people try and watch it, they'll be turned off before they have a chance to get drawn in to it. I can only pray that something better will come of this.

We're left with three steps to take, folks...
1. Rename the movie "Dragonlance : Let's See If We Can Make Ralph Bakshi Look Better". (If you don't know who Ralph Bakshi is, find a clip of his Lord Of The Rings animations, and you'll understand what I mean.)
2. Find all of the copies of this nightmare and bury them somewhere.
3. Let someone responsible make a real movie later, after we've managed to forget the terrifying 2-D/3-D imagery.

I think live action would have been best, but even animated this could have been a great movie. However, the fact they chose to outsource to an animation studio in Idia tells me they were just trying to cut cost. It wasn't about the story, it was about money.

looks pretty sucky. I've seen crappy little series pulling more detailed draws. and even if i'm not a grand fan of Kiefer Sutherland, I must say, he is by far the best voice actor in this... I would've gone with Julian Sands for Raistlin but hey.... have you heard the rest of the cast? crow, reminds me of those stupid little dubs we used to watch with Visionaires and Thundercats.......
