According to this guys website, it's not the motor that's making all that noise, it's the gear box.

would be very interesting to see what a hardcore unicyclist could do with it. It sounds truly awful, but a brushless hub motor would both look better and be totally silent.

No coasting involved, the motor would power the wheel as you lean forward or backward.
Hopping with this would be unruly, since a motor would add considerable weight and you would have to turn off the motor so that the unicycle doesn't go somewhere.
I personally think it would be a lot of fun. How about making a giraffe? That would be truly unique!
