@Skillsss123 I agree with on today's rap compared to the past, but you have to dig a little deeper than mid 90's to find the rap you're talking about. If you like Talib check out eric b and Rakim or Afrika Bambata, common, KRS-1 etc. Jay-z is a second hand biggie and no would be nowhere without him, tupac, nas, public enemy, nwa, run Dmc. None of these guys can match the genius of one of the greatest musicians ever, Neil Young. + 2 for being canadian cause 90% of their music is shit.
Unbelievable some thicko adds Biebers better, he will be forgotten in a few years, little twerp. This album is pure gold and timeless unlike so much that is churned out in the charts. Music to make memories to.
This song came out way before I was born i'm 14 and I hate the music that is coming out now a days, there are some nice bands such as matchbox20, three days grace, and breaking Benjamin. Rap is just a joke someone took to far right? I like to think so....
@ElCamino68ss Rap before your time was poetry to a beat. Mainstream rap now is beyond terrible. It glorifies stupidity in a facepalm kind of way. Check out intelligent rappers like Talib Kweli or Jay-Z for some respite
The ol man wasn't thrilled to be homeless, I don't believe he and Neil hit it off. Anybody believe Neil signed over the royalties because he felt bad about displacing the caretaker. As the story goes the ol' man said something to the effect....I've got no place to go and you've written me a song, thanks for nothing. He evidently didn't have a clue
@GarrettWilkins951 Well yeah, could you please tell your generation to stop giving us all the shit that we ear on the radio those day, thanks you very much.
My father was introduced me to a lot of old classic rock songs he likes, and I'm sad to say that he never really liked this one. I love it, though. One of my favorites. I'm fourteen and I love a song that nobody else I know does too..
This song reminds me so much of my brother who at that time was a, 'hippie', with great , 'hippie' friends, but thanks to the 'vietnam conflict', put an end to all of the 'piece, and love' days! Hippies weren't the problem at that time- it was our own GOVERNMENT!!!!!!!
The songs of the day then were 'all' about love- love with our fellow man, red, yellow, black, and white, but our govt. put an end to all of that! Vietnam is proof of that!!!
I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU (CAMHAWESMUSIC011) WE WILL NEVER HEAR MUSIC LIKE THIS EVER AGAIN, THIS MUSIC TODAY WILL NEVER BE REMEMBERED 40YRS FROM NOW, THEY JUST DONT KNOW WHAT MUSIC IS,AND "WAS" WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.
I was a teenager when this was a radio hit. I'm 57 now, and the song is more meaningful than ever. I'm still that young 24 year old man, deep down, still rebelling on many levels. Rebelling against authority and the "older generation", even though I'm old myself.:)
This song comes full circle in a relationship between father and son. As the son gets older, he's becoming the Old Man. I never get tired of listening to this song.
@DestinyVonGrave i'm so sorry to hear that. Spend as much as time went him as you can so he can die happy and accept death easier. My grandpa is also very weak nearing his end. his heart is like a ford t150 trucks engine running on fumes...
It's incredible really, to think this song was written & recorded over 40 years ago and it's sound and words are still more relevent and influential than anything recently, or really most things since.
That's why Neil Young is such a legend. He realizes that a true work of art spans through generations and generations of people, and he has never shamed himself in being anything but himself to make his name seem "current" today.
As his music ages, it becomes better, like all fine things.
@7colored i'm sorry for your loss.. he now knows what happens after life on earth. i'm not gonna say heaven or as atheist say "cease to exist".. he's some where in the universe or some place or thing bigger then that. Humans are unique.
@7colored God Bless you.my husband died 5-22-09.8 of our grandkids called him old man.Two call him grandpa.Awesome song..I am sorry for your loss.Have a great one..
95% of teens these days listen to the same crappy pop over and over again. If you're one of the 5% who still listens to real music, thumb this up, then copy & paste it to at least five videos. Dont let the spirit of rock and roll die!
My father in law passed 4 days ago. Doug and I were alike in some ways and I'll surely miss him! I grew up without my pop, he passed away when I was 6. My son and I are best friends and will always be!!!
I am now 57 years old. Its kind of weird to listen this song now that I'm older, but the song still rings true to me. I'm just sitting in the other chair. I still love Neil's music.
Listened to this song the night my dad passed away, while watching the movie Due Date. The irony between the movie & the events that just happened with my father was unbelieveable.. RIP daddy. 09.29.58-03.03.11 I love you with all my heart & ill never forget all the things you taught me in the 17 years i got to spend with you. </3
I love this song because I always called my father "old man" & he's been passed away since December of 2000. This song reminds me of my old man & I loved him with all of my heart & I still do & I miss him SO VERY MUCH TO THIS DAY that there are just NO WORDS to elaborate on EXACTLY how I feel. you know, as far as "likes or dislikes" i won't go to the trouble of putting out a dis like if the music i'm "rating" does really show some talent, musicianship. talent should be a universal understanding. every song that was as a gargantuan a hit as this one, don't always turn me on, but i'll probably hold off the dislikes out of respect. BUT, face it, the buttheads that feel it they're duty to rate always had a place in shaping future outlooks too. : )

He wrote the song after the man who owned the ranch in Canada Neil bought when he first started to come into money. Somewhere in the transaction Neil and the famer took a ride to the property's end talking. The farmer didn't understand how someone that was as young or looked like Neil could have to money or interest buying a Ranch. When asked, Neil replied "just lucky, i guess."
@ojking456 You're obviously about 24, and listen to nothing but rap right? get cultured you fucktard. This song is from 1971 you dope. It's not COOL to have no appreciation for other music besides the crap thats on the top 10 chart today.

@monstermash2011 douche. he was exclaiming his disbelief at how someone could have this song on a site called gaynerds or the fact that there is a site called gay nerds
It is a beautiful song! Its actually not about his dad though. Its about a old man he bought his country ranch from. The man and his wife made such an impression on him that he decided to write a song about them. I am planning on singing it at my fathers funeral though. Its a great dad song.
i love this song. Me and my old man are so alike. People think were the same person. We sound, act, and look the same. He's like my older twin. love you dad
I like this song, me and my dad have fights, but we make up, and as i grow day by day, i see that i am more and more like him every day, Prob drive the same kenworth, and combine wen he can no more, he will work till he dies, and so will I, and carrry on the lessons I have learned to my children from him, Love you dad, as u will see, I am alot like you.
Had a alcoholic friend who used to play this song constantly when was drunk. His dad was also a drunk and had left him when he was little. He would always sing the line "Old Man take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you' and then take another sip of booze. He drank himself to death at age 30 after living under a bridge. Found his body in a ditch with no ID. TV news reported his death as a nameless vagrant. Took a couple of days before family could be notified. Let that be a warning kids.
hahah my dad used to sing neil young to me when i was a kid so i would fall asleep. How whenever i hear neil young i always get tiered great song tho cheers!
My father was a stranger to me.. to everybody... he had some bad guys harming him to where he was no longer among us, thought present physically. The good news? We have a Father in heaven that watches after us and protects us all the time.... He will never leave me nor forsake me.
at least you got to see him after an undertaker made him presentable. i had the intense displeasure of seeing my father in a cooler at a neptune society creamatory. i will spare everyone the details, i very much regret going there and i'll never get the memory out of my mind. i already saw my dad shortly after he passed, why the hell did i have to go there??

It is a beautiful song! Its actually not about his dad though. Its about a old man he bought his country ranch from. The man and his wife made such an impression on him that he decided to write a song about them. I am planning on singing it at my fathers funeral though. Its a great dad song.

My father was a stranger to me.. to everybody... he had some bad guys harming him to where he was no longer among us, thought present physically. The good news? We have a Father in heaven that watches after us and protects us all the time.... He will never leave me nor forsake me.
And he loves you too.

at least you got to see him after an undertaker made him presentable. i had the intense displeasure of seeing my father in a cooler at a neptune society creamatory. i will spare everyone the details, i very much regret going there and i'll never get the memory out of my mind. i already saw my dad shortly after he passed, why the hell did i have to go there??
