  • @desertranger Hey so my parents are getting a 7 month old bc, female and i think my parents said it was abandond. Will that change a lot? And we already have a austrailian shepeard thats 10-11 years old. Will there be much conflict? Im 15 and active so im hopeing thats no problem. If u respond, thnx

  • you need time and energy to own a border. they need a place to run and a goal to accomplish. if you don't keep them busy, they will find something to get into ... usually not what you would want them to do. Praise is the best reward when training as they just want to please you.

  • We just adopted a 3 year old border collie. He is kind of timid and we suspect he was abused. Currently he is afraid of my horses so I don't think I have to worry about him herding anything anytime soon. He seems to be pretty mellow for a border collie. So either we are not seeing his real personality because of his past or he is an exception to the rule. But I will still be sure to keep him busy. :)

  • my border collies job is huntin down shadows and ceiling fans.whatever you have to do to keep them busy and happy;)

  • Which is better border collie or rough collie?I'm thinking about getting one but I can't decide which kind

  • well a border collie is one of the most active breeds in the world and very smart but being as active makes them harder to own and if you dont stimulate them and there minds they can be destructive a rough collie is about as easy trainable but with not as high of an activity level rough collie are better family dogs and better for a companion if your looking for a dog for looks i would recomend the rough collie but if its a dog for agility or training i would say border collie hope this helped:D

  • also i have a 10 week old tri blue merle puppy her names ellie she knows 7 tricks ive had her for 3 weeks check out ma vids to see more of her

  • @horsegurl1212 Depends. If you want a pet get a rough collie. If you are willing to exercise 2 hours a day, mental training another hour and then give your dog a "job", get a Border Collie. Important thing you should note is that you should get your dog from a reputable breeder and do you research THOROUGHLY about this dog. This is my own opinion: get a dog from a working stock. Not a AKC registered dog. AKC breed their dogs for looks. Their dog's temperament and health are severely compromised.

  • i have a border collie

  • I rescued a boarder collie about 8 months ago. He is ~5 years old and is very sweet but he acts like he has OCD. We knew had some issues when we got him, but hoped they would past when he got to a home. When we took he sheep herding the own of the ranch said he was likely used for bearding, while kept in a cage. He had chowed his K-9s down to nobs which happen when they try to chow up of a chain fence. He goes to the park most days, but all other dogs are just sheep for him to herd.

  • @megaganjaman ps please do not blow pot smoke into ur dogs face or get high with ur dog. Not saying u will but just putting that out there

  • @NightPredator888 Dude I'm not an idiot, and the name's a joke.

  • @megaganjaman my first dog ever was a border collie they are easy to train. Just do research on the breed first and get a list of simple commands. Tip I learned the hard way the first trick u teach a dog is the one they do the most.

  • its funny.what you said about a border collie is the exact opposite with my 8 week one.

  • I've owned border collies for 40 years. I agree, unless you are willing to put in the time to work with a BC don't do it. BCs are re-homed more often than most dogs. Want more BC info contact me.

  • damn. i really wanted a border collie but it would be my first ever dog and I don't think I would be able to train it as I don't have much experience :( shame.

  • My old dog Dixie, was a border collie crossed with a jack russel, size of the russel but looked like a collie in every way. Perfect dog, loving, caring, and heaps of fun for me and my two sisters when we were growing up, she lived for 18 years and a bit more. now we have a full male border collie charlie and he is very loving and a great dog, he is very active and after the first few months of owing him he has settled right down into are home he is also very large.

  • Realistically, a 30 minute walk, is at best, just a warm-up for a Border Collie.A vigorous three-hour walk/jog for a Border Collie is the equivalent of a 1/2 hour walk for your average dog. A BC will not be tired at all after a three hour run. Unless you have serious aspirations for performance training and competition, or day-to-day herding, there are many other breeds that will provide a more satisfying (and saner) home life. Please think first before you commit to a Border Collie!

  • I got a border collie, and she's nothing like a border collie. :/ It's a shame but I love her nonetheless. She's lazy, and loves to just lay in the couch. She's as healthy as can be! I thin kshe's just that one in a thousand that's nothing like the breed's supposed to be. She hates being active, especially in warm weather. :/

  • @cookie4me Mine too, even though she was active when young. We just recently found out she has severe hip displasia in both hips, and that's why her activity plummetted, just after the age of 1 year. :( Just an FWI in case she ever starts whining or barking at you when you want her to come or go to a certain location in the house, even just down a single stair step or onto slippery floor.

  • @DaWhiteWolffie She might not be totally active, bút I'm pretty sure she doesn't have a problem with her hips. She walks the stairs up and down and jump up and down the couch, crate and I even caught her trying to steal from the counter...She's just incredibly lazy! lol

  • @cookie4me Glad to hear it! ^.^

  • Border Collies are great dogs and i pretty much agree with everything you said in your video. I even shared the video on my new border collie site as i think people can learn a lot from this. Thanks

  • I see ALOT more people have FEMALE border collies. Whats wrong with Males ?

  • @DrHooligan312 nothing my gran had a male and he was perfect, the only bad thing is he died of old age 5 years ago and he is very dearly missed, both males and females are perfect :)

  • @DrHooligan312

Nothing. I have a male BC and he's very sweet and completely obedient as long as he doesn't see another dog or a cow :P

  • Collies are amazing but people, don't just buy them because they're pretty. They take a lot of work and a LOT of exercise to keep them entertained. We can take our collie for a 10 mile walk and as soon as we get home he's ready to go again. Be prepared :)

  • border collies are so smart. my dog is border collie mix. but she is some time to smart for her own good. LOl but i love her. and she trys to heard my 7 tear old sister LOl

  • border collies are so smart. my dog is border collie mix. but she is some time to smart for her own good. LOl but i love her

  • I have a border collie/greyhound mix, and he has the brains of a border collie, but the greyhound is more dominant in him. He is colored like a BC but shaped more like a GH. He's very active, but he doesn't seem to try to herd anything. He loves to chase cats though...He baffles me sometimes because I never know when I'm dealing with the BC or the GH...

  • Do they have to herd? Or is there any other activity you can do whit them instead?

  • @gzpow They sure like it, not necessary though.

But if you pay attention, when they chase someone or another animal they "herd" it. And look for shortcuts to get close enough.

My border collie(Saphira) is just 7 weeks and she is very playful, active and intelligent, her father (Cliff) did herd *bulls*(seriously)

  • I had a border collie that would herd me when I was in the swimming pool. No matter where I was in the pool, she would be 180 degrees from me. If I were under water for too long, she would jump in to save me. She would run around the pool until her paws were raw from running on the cement. When that happened, I would have to not swim so they could heal. Nothing could stop her instinct from wanting to herd me when I was in the pool. Amazing Creatures!

  • I have 2 border collie mixes. A border collie/beagle mix (Gage-male 2 years) and a border collie/english setter mix (Cotton-female 1 year). Gage used to try to herd my children, LoL, but he has learned not to do so. My main problem is them jumping all over everyone when they come in the house. Any suggestions on how to train them not to do so?

  • Many of you seem to be doing only a small bit of exercise with your BC. My BC gets 2 walks/runs of at least 40 minutes and then 2 play sessions per day, and free run in the yard, and some work on the farm (she loves herding the water when hosing down the yard!) I think she would like to do more! A BC is not for people who want too just walk their dog and have it hang around! They need heaps of mind work and exercise to be happy

  • The best dogs in the whole world!

  • my 15 year old collie is still awsome and still wants to work but she really cant also she has no teeth cause she would chew on rocks and she would chip he teeth before we could get it out...if you want a good dog that is great with kids get a bordercollie they are really awsome with kids

  • Do most of them bark like other dogs or not ?

MY Dad had one for 14 yrs, she rarely barked. The only time was when she saw horses in the neigbors field. When someone came, she didn't bark, just delighted out of her mind to see them all ! Dad wanted her to alert him to company, but no. She was the most loving, cuddly dog I've ever known, and I've had a lot of dogs.

I loved her so much, I'd like to have one a few yrs old, but live alone, and do need one to bark, that's why I'm asking. Thx !!

  • @neiltreloar yeah you're an idiot

  • someone should try telling this to some people i know who own 2 border collie dogs (both whole and brothers). they keep them cooped up under the stairs practically all day whilst they're at work and they get walked about 3 times a week. i own one of my own and he gets walked 3 times in the day for at least an hour a time and once at midnight for an hour. they think im crazy but i just tell them that its what he needs because he's so energetic. not surprising their dogs have behavioural problems

  • I keep my BC busy with a lazer light.

  • Wow thnx!

  • This is the best info i've gotten on Border Collies.......When I can handle another dog i might get a Border Collie!

  • inteelegent my ass i told my border collie to do a trick he grabed the bag of chicken from my hand and ate it then did the trick

  • They are the BEST dogs in the world. Mine will sit and hold my hand through an entire movie. She talks constantly (Grumbeling), cleans her bothers face and grooms him just as I do her (He's a bulldog), picks up the dog toys around the house and places them on the right beds for each dog (We have 2 Bullies and her), does 12 tricks, and recognizes 65 different words. FYI: She was a Parvo Rescue Pup from the shelter. If we hadn't adopted her they would had destroyed. ADOPT RESCUE DOGS!

  • Correction on your video: you dont own the Bordie Collie, he or she Owns you LOL.

  • @440sac you are absolutely 100% correct!

  • @eletendre1 hi there my name is cheyenne and i love dogs

i asked santa to get me one while hes on his way around the world. my mother would alow to have one two and i love border collies.

my grandfather owns one so i talked to him about it like you said he says there very remakable dogs so if this video can help me thankyou very much for makeing the video (=

  • @eletendre1 Also she's pretty underweight.

  • @440sac Happens even outside Soviet Russia

  • @440sac So so true. And they like to give themselves jobs, too.

  • @440sac nope, it is according to cats.. all cats.. don't even try to compare it to the dogs.

  • Great video eletendre, but I have one simple question you might be able to help me out on.

Ive been trying since day one to walk my border collie who is now 4 months old but she wont GO.

She lays flat on the ground and pees....why is she so nervous? Any reply would be great. Thanks

  • @zambonisimcoe Have you tried putting the leash on her and letting her just run around your home daily with it on? Eventually she will get use to it and pay it no mind.

  • I think you hit the nail on the head. I have three border collies that are FANTASTIC, but I do agility, obedience and sheep herding with all of them. I think they would drive me NUTS if I did not work with them as much as I do. Also they are smart which means they learn bad things and ways around the rules just as quick as they learn the good stuff so you have to be consistent and train them what you DO want, if you are a trainaholic then they are FANTASTIC!

  • i have recently got a border collie pup she is really intelligent my cousin got a springer spaniel hes jealous at how quick my dog is learning but i keep telling him its patience time and effort

  • i am glad to see that so many people love Border Collies. most of what is said here is true. They are intelligent and fast. But I disagree with you have to walk them everyday. There are other ways to entertain such an active brain and body. I have raised them for the past ten years. I still have 4 ages 5-15. TRAINING. This is the key. they know how to be fast, teach them to be slow and still. This is mental work for them. Mine live in the house and don't get to run everyday. Enjoy.

  • I know alot about border collies because I have my own named Rocket!!!

  • Great video I walk my Border Collie 3-5 miles a day & once a week I do about 10miles & still he wants more, he hates being on the leash loves to swim & is a joy to own BUT if you are thinking about getting a Border Collie remember they get bored so they need to walk every day don't get one if its going to be shut in they hate it !! ,they are very intelligent & need to be doing things they love people & always wants everything herded together give it love & you'll get tons back

  • HA HA! My boarder collie is always trying to herd everything she sees...when she's playing she grabs my foot making it very difficult for me to walk. She always wants to play but it's difficult to play with her because when we got her as a puppy she always had heart problems...

  • My border collie Max, is AMAZINGLY smart I had him for a day and he learned Sit, and lie down, THAT NIGHT!!! He is so active!! and He herds my horse ALL the time... He follows me EVERYWHERE!!! And when I have to go somewhere without him he crys

  • My last dog Jake (collie) and I used to walk 49 miles a week in all weathers in order to keep him active and stimulated. Thats aside from playing ball and other things to keep him happy. Collies are fantastic dogs but "you have to be a collie person to own a collie dog". How true!

  • my border collie is just a little bit to smart... hes a dam escape artist lol, they havent built a fence yet that will keep him in.

  • i love um..what great dogs, mine always herds the kids on the slide trampoline swings etc, i wouldn't say a great guard dog but there's no birds left on the fields after he's chased them off.. lol

  • When my Bonnie first came to live with me (adopted), she tried to herd me and the cat. lol It didn't take her long to realize that this was not appropriate. She had a big yard (fenced) and her job was to protect anything within those borders. So I do disagree with you somewhat but they are so smart, they are sneaky. lol I even have parrots and she knew to leave them alone. I miss her.

  • Babe tried herding a car. Didn't work out so well for her. nipping at tires.

  • I was told by many people how "crazy" and intense border collies are when I told them I wanted to get one. But the truth is, he's a great fit for me. I'm active and I love to teach him something new everyday. The biggest help I heard in finally deciding to get one, was knowing that a workout is not enough for them. They need and want to be told what to do, all day every day. We do agility, frisbee trick and all sorts of other games to build his character, and help me stay in shape!

  • they're great famly pets. mine used to chase after me when i was little but she wouldnt attack me, thats how loyal they are.

  • @supersandman86 Hehe! So you'd call a dog loyal if it doesn't attack you? If that's your criteria for a loyal dog, i wonder what kind of dogs you are used to. ;)

  • @Manesovaborjegi well whats your idea of loyalty for a dog?

  • lol does it clean the kitchen too?

  • @ssips720 show him how to, and he/she will xD

  • i defintatly wanna do agility

  • My ex boyfriend had a border collie. But no1 in his household could give him a lot of attention. So they give it away to a man who has alot of experience with these dogs and lives close to the woods and to big open flields. Now he can play all day.

And yeah, they do try to herd everything. He tried to herd a scooter once.

  • As an owner of two eight year old collies, many people make the mistake of trying to tire them out physically. All you are doing is making your dog fitter and it will want more every time.

You need to excercise the mind of a collie more than the body. Give it something to do and it will be happy.

  • @Skerne I already have plans =D

run with him, stop at every park I find, do frizbe, tricks, run again to the next park, and same senario. this, 2 times a day. I work every day, but I'am not alone, so he won't have much trouble to be left alone for like, 5 to 6 hours. will have toys and music so he can pass his boredom for the few hours alone. of course, will meet other dogs in the process. I think I have a great plan

  • Hii,, great advice you give,,!! i actually have a two year ols border;; Zora,, she's like the best thing ever happened to me,, =] keep you're thumbs up for us couse we got an entrance exam for agility next week,,!! anyway,, thnx for the video,, =]

  • Wonderful advice. I have 2 border collies and love them so much. What you say is true, they are very active dogs and demand a lot of stimulation! One thing you did not mention, they are also escape artists, when we would leave the house the puppy would be in her crate, by teh time we got home, she would be siting at the door with the older one waiting for us to open it! lol

  • Okay. Thanks for your help :)

  • I have a border collie we put her in a kennel for the first 8 months when we would leave but now we leave her out in the house all day. She is very good but we give her a lot of play time in the evenings. I suggest a tennis ball and racket the racket saves on your arm and you can hit it about 75 yards. She is also is very strong and with a harness she will pull you on a bike for miles it takes a lot of practice though.

  • Oh! I'm so excited. I'm getting a Border Collie x Kelpie on Saturday! Does anyone know how long they can be left alone at home for?

  • My Border Collie/Shepard is alone for 10 hours a day 4 days a week and she's ok but requires lots of attention the second i get in. She need a couple hours of exercise a day, a big area to run, and to play with other dogs. Nothing wears her out better then an hour at the dog park.

  • @ILive4JacobBlack if you leave then inside your house alone for more than an hour, they'll turn it upside down!!!!!!!!

  • lol penny doesn't look too fun. i have a border collie... he's okay. i mean i had a wonderful rat terrier before who died of cancer. didn't want another to remind me of him, but i mean coming from terriers, a border collie is obviously a little less curious and lacking in the personality department, but he's a great dog nonetheless! : D

  • I wish that I had researched this breed more before I let my family buy 3 of them..! lol. I love my dogs, but they tire us out very quickly, while they never seem to run out of energy! They get into a lot of trouble when they're bored!

  • How long can they be alone? I mean people do have to go to work and do things without our pets. Is it better to crate train them or can these dogs be left lose in the house? (I'm thinking the second option only works if you want to return to a shredded couch)

  • If you have to leave your dog in a crate, and don't have a yard, much less an acreage to run around on, I would recommend not even considering a collie.

Ask yourself whether or not you are getting the breed because of aesthetic reasons or because he actually suits your style of life.

I'm no professional, this is just from my exp. of being around multiple dogs my entire life.

Bottom line: if you live in town and aren't a fitness fanatic, please don't buy a border collie!

  • We do have a yard (big enough), we only leave her in the crate for a few hours while she's a puppy, later on she'll be allowed to go in and out through a doggy door. We did get her for her beauty but also because I needed an exercise buddy (our poodles are not very fast runners)

So far she seems happy with the life we're giving her and that makes me happy.

  • Sounds great. If she develops any kind of quirks. Don't think of it as personality, it is probably because she is bored! It sounds like she has some pack company for when you are gone (the poodles) as well. If you stay observant and make sure she is well exercised and challenged, I'm sure your dog will have a great life.

  • how do border collies do in snow and can u put them on a treadmil to give them excercize if theweather is bad

  • If you get a border collie you better be ready to go out EVERYDAY even if the weather is bad! I have a border collie and to have him be less destructive we take him out everyday for about 30 minutes of off leash ball playing and sometimes he even wants to play more. They are active dog which means you have to be too!!

  • @jenthecagirl87 you can always play with him in the backyard where you throw a tennis ball or even a frisbe until you get tire...

  • @jenthecagirl87 i'm considering getting a border collie, but i live in an apartment (pet friendly). i have a running machine (obviously, i'll take it slow and make sure the dog is use to the machine first) and i was thinking a 20 min jog in the morning, 20 min jog in the afternoon, and 20 min jog at night. and then 30 min of obedience in the afternoon. what do you think? is this enough?

(there will be walks outside for depositing wastes)

  • @iplehguitar I dont think so, this breed need be in contact with the nature, and run, and run, and need many work to do. The dog will suffer much frustation in a departament, is just not healthy even for you.

  • @jenthecagirl87 THANX CAPTAIN OBVIOUS

  • @jenthecagirl87 You need to do more, mine goes out every hour of the day, goes to work, she gets sleep time.30 minutes once a day is cruel,1 hour morning,i hour night, minumum walks, but also 2 or 3 times between, ideally, find them an occupation, and let them earn a living.Mine watches the Fishing rod, knows when we have a fish, but I guess we do 10 moles a day minimum walking.more weekings, and that is just as the crow flies.I bet your dog is fat?

  • @neiltreloar you are an idiot mate...

  • @libbertines I may be an idiot, but my Collie cartainly is not,An obsolutely outstanding Dog,the more you put into something, the more you get out of it.Some people should not have Dogs, and some could have many breeds, but not a Collie, they are a breed apart.

  • @libbertines Speak for your self...

  • @jenthecagirl87 LOOL same with my dog exept their a mix of border collie and german shepherd!!

  • ours always did fine... even though they will make you think they are cold... they just want to come in the house. If ours knows your watching him he will start to make shivering motions but as soon as you go inside and he doesn't see you its all normal. winter time, they grow alot more hair than you would think.

  • @traucerboi24 no you cant put them on a tread mill they will get bored and there not getting exercised mentally if you are afraid of bad weather then i suggest you get a smaller dog

  • not to mention the part where BCs are EXTREMELY destructive

  • My Border Collie is 2 years old and she's the smartest dog I've ever owned. Sweetest and most loving dog in the world! Wouldn't want to live without her.

  • i get border collie =D border collie so cute

  • I had a Border Collie for ten years. He was incredibly smart. He had the most intelligent eyes I have ever seen on a living thing; including people. He tried to herd me for ten years. he herded my other dogs, my cats, bees. He was very bossy and argued with me constantly. But he was also very affectionate. I could reason with him. You can't reason with Muslims, liberals, or religious zealots; but you can reason with a Border Collie. They're smarter.

  • @StephenB58

    stereotyping is good reasonig?

no wonder the dog had the most intelligent eyes you had ever seen on a living thing,

    fool.

  • i have a mixed pikingese and japanese chin. 2 most spoiled, house dogs u cud imagine. yet he plays fetch, runs around the local parks and is SO smart. its not the dog its the owner.

  • me too lol

  • Border Collies should NEVER be in an apartment. Just being in a city is hard on the dog. They will herd ANYTHING, sheep, cows, cats, children even. They are usually smarter than their owners. I know, I grew up on a ranch and my Dad had one. She would herd either sheep, cows, or both together. These dogs need room and lots of it.

  • wat dog should i get if i want somethign obedient, don't regulary need excersie, can live outdoors. any suggestsions?

  • why get a dog then? live outdoors and not need excercise? u need a stuffed animal then !

  • LOL

  • Try rescuing a good sturdy mutt from the animal shelters, I suggest. They're in need, and you can tell by their persona instantly of they fit your lifestyle. As far as some good out-doorsy yet loyal: Mastiffs, Goldens, Basset Hounds, Georgia Bloodhounds, to name a few. But they still need at least a short walk/stimulation every day. And they're all notorious chewers. NO such pet exists that needs a low amount of care. FYI ALLLLLL Puppies are hyper at first. Even the laziest breeds.

  • pug maybe?

  • I dont think that you should have a dog. I totally agree with "ohaaaaySkylax3"

    Try a cat or something.

  • Eh, If by outdoors you mean a large patch of land I openly suggest a Labrador Retriever, especially if you have some water on it.

  • Dogs that live outside tends to be the ones that need a lot of excersise to be honest :/

  • I'm getting a Border Collie soon I've wanted a dog of my own for a long time I really want a companion allto myself.

  • same here ve wanted a dog 4 so long x

  • An english teacher would have a heyday with you.

  • I got 3 yr old dog from Humane Society. I would never have thought border collie... he is white with cream markings. He has been a CHALLENGE. Had DNA done and voila... he's border collie/whippet. That explained alot. He is calm inside (unless he sees the vacuum cleaner) but outside he reacts to motorcycles, bicycles, and (OMG!) skateboards. He's better about the first 2, but skateboards I am afraid will always be a problem. He is extremely smart, but also extremely easily distracted.

  • lol just remember they learn things very quickly bad as well as good xx good luck too ya

  • take home a glorious lab or a clever poodle sorry for the preach xx

  • monty python on acid x Oz is the joy of my life but i had to work at it and if you have any doubts do not own a BC they are sooo clever and wonderfully mischievous i get that, if you don't your in trouble and thats the reason they are one of the breeds most likely to be abandoned & needing re-homing. I could write reams on how wonderful BCs are and thats why i am saying please make sure you do your homework before you decide to have one and read all the bad stuff, know the breed accept if not

  • Comment removed

  • ....... with patience and positive confirmation (and believe me i could have so strangled him at times!) i just brushed off the naughty and heavily praised the good and now 18 months later i have a beautiful, loving, mostly obedient best friend i ever had but please, please, please do not even consider a BC unless a) you have time to spend b) you want just a "dog" and c) you have a slightly twisted sense of humour (or at least more than your collie lol) think family guy on speed crossed with

  • The man is correct you do not own border collies they decide on you they are the only dog breed i know who do this lol my collie oz came to me from a rescue centre at 9-12 months old and he was a complete nightmare hyper and nothing was sacred he tested me to my limits and made me cry with frustration and anger on too many occasions he chewed/damaged/destroyed my world ! but

  • There are show versions of this breed which has breed out the hyper activity, they are really nice looking and are still smart as!

  • I have 2 pure border collies one is very active (Elvis) the other is god damm lazy (The King) they are litter brothers, anyone interested can check my youtube page, I have videos of both there. The thing that I think is important about the Border Collies is that is not enough to exercise them fisically (I mean for an active one) I can play fetch for hours with Elvis for 3 hours and he'll keep on, he needs mental exercise to get really relax, but they are both very calm inside the house!

  • I have a smoothed coated border collie pup and OMG he is never stops and is so cute. You have just got to see my youtube video of him at 9 weeks. 'Border Collie Puppy Shuggie 9 weeks old'

  • Intelligent is not the word. I'm sure my Collie trys to trick me. I think he is probably smarter than me :-(

  • @Phillthy59 AMENN!

  • I'm trying to talk my daughter out of getting a Border Collie. Both she and husband are gone all day. My granddaughters get home from school before parents get home. I can just see them letting the dog out of the crate to play with, their friends come and we'll have a herding disaster in the making. The BC needs a lot more attention, training and exercise than they are capable of giving.

  • Tadpole - It really depends on the attitude of the border collie you're getting. I wouldn't recommend one with a strong herding instinct, but at the same time farms have children too.... Train the dog properly and it won't be an issue. Lots of walks/run/play, and proper training and just about any breed will be fine with a family.

  • Thank you. I got a rescue a couple of weeks ago. I have had many dogs over the years, this border collie is the sweetest, most well mannered dog I have ever had. She is about 3 years old, totally confident, alert, but also very calm. I can take her in the yard and play for as long as I last, or take her to the dog park where she runs and plays for an hour or more. In the house she is completely calm. Yup, not your typical border collie.

  • I got a German shepherd X Border Collie and this guy is right! You do need the time and energy for it. No joke! I'm glad the GS side calms him down a bit.

  • Please only get a border collie if you are at home all day or someone is home, and if your have the time to train it and walk it, if you dont have this time i recoment you get a small easyer dog.

  • My brother owns a border collie-She is the sweetest and smartest dog that i have ever known...she's 9 years old and I just want to know how long do border collies lives?

  • Usually between 12-14 years without any health issues. I have a 10yr old BC and he is more active and can outrun any dog half his age.

  • I had a Border Collie for ten years until someone poisoned him. He would try to herd anything; my other dogs, my cats, bumble bees, me. And he would argue with me and sass me all day long. He ran my life. He was my master. He was so funny, and so smart. He had the most intelligent eyes I have ever seen on a living being. He was incredibly smart. You could reason with him; much unlike reasoning with liberal politicians. He was smarter than most people. They can be very bossy.

  • That is so sad someone did that

  • I loooooove border collies, but my yard isn't big enough!! :(

  • ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON ADVICE - Ive lost 2 stone in weight in 8 months since i got a Border collie, and if i had enough land, id fill it full of them, a wonderful pet and my best friend

  • congrats on loosing 28lbs

  • I have a border collie and she is 3 now. When she was a puppy she would always try to bite my feet my sisters feet or any ones feet as long as they were sorta short. She would herd us all to the middle of the yard. Check out my videos. Some of them have her in it

  • amazing, i plan on getting a border collie when i have my own house, if ithas a big enough yard =D

there sweet and adorable, and i definatly understand how much excercise they need.

  • Very accurate description. I have 3 border collies, 2 of which were rehoused because the original owners couldn't cope with them!!! One had been caged all day whilst it's owners were at work. It's taken us a year to settle him down, but he's a great dog now. Potential owners need to be aware that they will have to put in a lot of work, but you do get a lot back in return and ideally you need a lot of garden space!!!!

  • your awsome ;)

  • My border collie/aussie mix is not how you describe, but I guess mine is not the norm. I haven't noticed any herding tendencies. She just loves to chase squirrel, raccoon, deer, possum like most dogs. The best thing we did for her was getting another dog, a pup, they play for hours, running and tackling, and it gets all their energy out.

  • I guess its cause you have a mix

  • Here's a tip for exercising your energetic border collie: Take an old fishing rod and tie an old glove to the end of the line. Take your dog to your yard or the park, and cast and reel the glove like crazy, while the dog chases it. It doesn't take very much effort on the human's part, nor does it take very much space, but you can exhaust your pooch and they LOVE it! It's easier, more effective, more space-efficient, and plain-old more fun than fetch or just letting your dog run loose.

  • Thanks!

    I will try that :)

  • Excellent warning to people who are not well-suited to border collies. They are my second-favourite breed (after Jack Russells) and it breaks my heart to see so many people acquire one of those breeds, without really being prepared for what they're getting themselves into. It's sad for both the dog and the humans. Some folks shouldn't be getting much more than one of those horrid little Shih Tzus or a nice, dumb Labrador!

  • rude! i happen to own a Shih tzu! thats very insulting, my dog is a lovely dog and he is incredibly intelligent, and caring, they're great dogs as well as border collies. AND labradors.

  • Call it "rude" if you want, but it's true. A labrador or a shih tzu is an adequate dog if that's what you want, but they are a pale reflection of the personality, physical ability and intense intelligence of a border collie or jack russell. For the VAST majority of dog owners, labs and STs are the perfect pet. However, if you are a full-throttle dog lover with the time and energy to devote to a BC or JRT, you'll see what I mean. Those breeds are sweet and cute, but also MUCH more than a lapdog.

  • You can't lump a small lap dog, and a sporting dog in the same category as a border collie.. lol There's a vast difference in intelligence of the breeds. they were bred for different things.

  • Border Collie's make extremely good dogs. I have a B.C. mix and she is very intelligent and very loving. They require lots of attention though are are very jealous and controlling dogs when it comes to other dogs in the house. I would recommend just having one dog if you choose to get a border collie. Excellent dog though!

  • I have a BC mix too! Great dogs for anyone looking for an exercize partner. If you ask them to dog somthing they willingly do it. I agrre, they can be very jealous and controlling.

  • I have a border collie and you are right he is VERY jealous of our other dog. He`s got the sweetest personality in the world and so gentle but he just can`t stand it if we give our other dog attention even though he loves her very much. Our other dog is a BC mix and she also tends to be jealous and possessive but the full blooded BC is worse on the jealousy side.

  • I agree, border collies are not suitable for every household. They are very demanding and will require a significant amount of time and effort and the owners behalf.

I recently adopted a border collie. While, he is a very gentle dog, he can be very motion sensitive and will at times try to herd birds that fly over the field in front of my house. This can be quite a nuisance as I'm worried that he may be shot by the farmers for chasing the livestock.

  • thanx

  • I have a border collie. Her name is Maggie. We think she was the runt, because she isn't very smart.

  • i have a border collie x husky (3/4 border collie) & he is good with cats he sometimes tries to play with them bt doesnt hurt them or anything, ive heard that huskys arent very good with cats im not sure if thats true... i think its how u raise them if their bought up with cats they will lyk them.

  • Your pup must have been raised with cats because our husky hates them :)

  • husky will be nicest to cats i think, but they have SERIOUS fur shedding, but i think thats theyre only prob, lovely dogs!

  • i dont know which dog to get

a border collie or a german shepherd, or a siberian husky, and which one of those dogs will be good with cats? someone please help me!

  • I think of the three choices, a german shepherd would be best -- but for my choice, I would get a standard poodle - athletic, as smart as a border collie, and very little shedding.

  • Hmm... My agility instructor's BCs are couch potatoes. My JRTs are couch potatoes when not doing agility or hunting. If I flip the switch, they are ready for action.

Mind you, we are active with our dogs but once they know their routine, they become couch potatoes

  • I have A Border Collie/Blue heeler & he's energetic yes, but he also doesn't mind relaxing w/ his buddy every now & then.

  • Im glad you posted this, its true BC's are not the dog for everyone!! If you're looking for a quiet dog to lay by your feet, this is not the dog for you! But if you are a highly active person who enjoys spending lots of time with your pooch, then they are great!

  • I'm getting a Purebred Border Collie pup next Satursday and im like running alot so its the right dog for me :D
