By the way, the reason the USSR's 'Venera' space craft never came back is because it landed on the surface of Venus...and that is one hell of an accomplishment - 90-100 Earth atmospheres, hot enough to melt tin and sulphuric acid clouds.
Personally I think a joint Russian, American space mission would be the best of both worlds.
