@LovesTetris while it probably was the shards or spiritual pressure, there is also the possibility that the raw force of the attack cut ichigo, as is shown in future episodes, that for some people just the swing of a zanpakuto is enough to destroy a building, and being one of the strongest attacks in byakuyas arsenal it could definitely be one of the attacks to fit that description

before the hollow got involved ichigo was untouched, slowing down from misuse of his own power, but still far faster and easily capable of ending it if he stopped playing with byakuya. after the hollow got involved ichigo and byakuya were wounded. then in the end they simply opted to put all their energy into one attack, making it a simple contest of power, which ichigo won with his own power. clearly, the hollow was at best irrelevant

@waldoman7 i disagree. byakuya wasn't serious and underestimated ichigo and his bankai's abilities. the real fight started when byakuya used Senkei. as you can see his sword skills are better than ichigos. 1.30 - 1:37 there you can see a direct hit. ichi wasn't faster and easily capable of ending the fight, check 1:46-2:08.

when byakuya is serious he is stronger than ichi, but not against hollow ichi@this arc.
