Actually there aren't all that many similarities between Fuschia and Ophelia. The film enhances these similarities. Like Fuschia didn't actually kill herself and Steerpike didn't actually even toutch the twins' skulls. But i love Gormenghast and you video is amazing. I prefer to think of Fuschia as the Lady of Shallot.
Genius! I love how you switched the original clip from Fuschia watching Steerpike swim towards her, to the clip of him on the horse. beautiful editing.:)
Beautifully done! I loved Fuchsia in the book, but I don't like how she's portrayed in the BBC series (though I haven't seen the whole thing). But with your choice of clips combined with the song, I think you capture someone closer to the character Peake imagined. Nice work.
i'm sorry for being so ignorant but could someone please tell me why is steerpike wearing a mask?did his face get deformed?i only read the first book because the others aren't translated in my language?
Wow; I can't imagine reading Gormenghast in translation. I hope whatever you read does justice to the original. Reading Peake is a singular experience; he's very nearly his own genre.
I don't want to ruin the whole story for you, but Steerpike is wearing a mask because he got burned when he was committing a murder in order to become Master of Ritual.
Very, very skillfully made - and the quotes really aren't that cheesy. I love Gormenghast, and Fuchsia has always been a favourite of mine (along with Doctor P. - good to see him in there too)
I never made the connection between Ophelia and Fuchsia, but it really does work! Well-spotted!
that was crazy good! i always used ophelia as my pseudonym until i got my puppy and started using her name! hate to say natalie merchant does nothing for me, though i can appreciate the song...i've been obsessed with gormenghast and jrm for years, i love how well you tied in a third obsession of mine (i have that millais ophelia painting above my bed!)
Then again, Fuschia shares similarities with a lot of Shakespeare heroines - when she's dreaming on that balcony she could easily be Juliet; as a princess she's Cordelia to her mad King Lear father.
Lovely video - very well put together. (despite the slightly maddening song!)
wish i could read gormenghast....

The scene at the end with Fuscia in the water always reminded me of John Millais's Ophelia painting. Great vid.
