MGS has probably the worst storyline of any game series ever made. Only hardcore fans know what's going on, and even they don't really have any real clue they just like to pretend. It's like the one franchise that even Hideo Kojima's writing can't kill.
@TheRucati MGS is a stand-out series for story-telling. The problem is: Kojima went for something post-modern with the story of MGS2. A lot of things that left players with questions after MGS2 weren't supposed to make sense or be taken seriously. Fans kept demanding games to prove their theories and give the answers. He had to solve a paradox in making sense of the absurd for MGS4, and the whole plotline went to hell.
@TheRucati He didn't even make a concerned attempt with plot points in MGS4 (not that I can blame him), it was bananas. MGS4 was pretty much written to alienate fans and make them choose between the rest of the series and MGS4; to look for the meaning behind the stories and stop obsessing over details. What you should blame is your Xbox... MGS is to Epic for the Xbox 360! MGS is and allways has been meant for Playstation! And in my opinion Metsl Gear Solid should not be playd on any other system.... just like i would never play say Gears of War on PS3, even if it was ported. YOU SIMPLY JUST DON'T DO IT! Peace Walker was built for the PSP... Playstation Hardware handles it the best.

DSP, I got the ps3 version and the audio was bugged too, when I was in a certain area, and the background music sounded weird, but that only happened once though

Konami are such idiots. Great job on presenting the game so that when somebody shows gameplay on the internet, it looks bad with tons of bugs. Whoever worked on this game should be fired. @justmedawg The thing is, I did play the old games. I played MGS 1 and 2, the first Metal Gear, and I've played every Splinter Cell game. MGS games as of late have bad gameplay and try to compensate for it by using their convoluted plot.

@justmedawg To me, gameplay is lacking in terms of both length and quality. Even if the gameplay was good though, you would have to admit the developers are really lazy when it comes to doing actual gameplay compared to the work they put into their cutscenes and story. Games should emphasize gameplay, even if they are story centric. It's sad that people completely dismiss these flaws instead of trying to get Kojima to develop better games. Is it wrong to want developers to make better games?

@beeyotch23 Hand to hand combat in the game is weak, apparently the ability to move while prone has been taken out, the AI isn't outstanding and seems to have some flaws, and the level structure in the game feels too closed in. It's structured in a very linear way which isn't good for what is supposed to be a stealth game. Stealth games should allow you multiple paths into different areas, encouraging the player to think more like a spy. To me it seems like gameplay was an afterthought again.

Don't judge the combat at what you see from Phil's gameplay, when i watched his Dragon Age 2 video's i found them boring and thought the combat sucked, but after going to my local Civic Video and renting the game, i discovered the combat was actually fun and the story was great. trust me, what you see on a video and what you experience yourself are completely different things...
@resistance1207 My assessment of the game comes from doing research about it using reviews and videos, cross referenced with actual MGS games that I have played. Maybe you disagree with my viewpoints, but telling me to experience something in order to make an assessment is bad argument if you don't consider the fact that it's possible to get some idea of whether a game would appeal to you. If you got every game based on "I have to experience this myself" then you'd be broke, know what I'm sayin?

Yes you can see if the game appeals to you or not from videos and what not, but playing it is different. It's not bad argument at all, i trust more a person who had played the game than a review, mostly because most reviews are fake and are paid off by Companies to give good reviews. That is why you rent games to try them out, not just go out and buy one.

The story line is good and I love that there is always an theme for each game. It makes for great personal reflection. With MGS you have to be ready for long drawn out CS and put your brain at the door.

Metal Gear Solid's atrocious, hilariously stupid plot isn't worth the ridiculously long overindulgent cutscenes the game has.
Mass Effect is a game that gets the story/gameplay balance down perfectly. The story is worth paying attention to as well.

"Appreciating" stories has nothing to do with age, it's personal preference. It's the equivalent to saying that anyone who doesn't like horror movies must be 15 years old, no, some people like horror movie and others don't... it has nothing to do with age. I played through MSG4 but it was painful, each cut-scene was 30 minutes long and the story was shit.

@jerzu97 Those age limits are not there to protect children from watching movies that don't appeal to them. They're there in order to prevent them from seeing content that are not deemed appropriate for their ages group. So my point still stand, your tastes/ preferences are not dictated by your age. For instance, I watched plenty of 18 rated films before I was even 18 and I enjoyed them, likewise, I played plenty of 18 rated games and enjoyed them too I have also despised some games and still do

That sure is intense and incredibly interesting. @justmedawg The thing is, I did play the old games. I played MGS 1 and 2, the first Metal Gear, and I've played every Splinter Cell game. MGS games as of late have bad gameplay and try to compensate for it by using their convoluted plot.
Don't assume I'm all about action shooters when you reply to me next time.

@justmedawg To me, gameplay is lacking in terms of both length and quality. Even if the gameplay was good though, you would have to admit the developers are really lazy when it comes to doing actual gameplay compared to the work they put into their cutscenes and story. Games should emphasize gameplay, even if they are story centric. It's sad that people completely dismiss these flaws instead of trying to get Kojima to develop better games. Is it wrong to want developers to make better games?

@beeyotch23 I've played a bunch of games with both great gameplay and story. MGS doesn't get to be excused just because it has a giant fanbase of idiots who don't care about gameplay. Gameplay is what makes it a game. If that fails, then you might as well have this game be a movie. You want a game with good story AND gameplay? Play the first Deus Ex.

Don't assume these new AAA titles are going to be all about the gameplay. I agree with you though. I like a game with good gameplay and story. Sometimes a game can have a really good story, but god-awful gameplay, but this game isn't one of them.

If you agree with me on the fact that story centric games can work well with good gameplay, but you say arcade games are the only ones where the gameplay matters. Where's the logic in that? Take the fanboy goggles off for a second and really explain what makes this game so special. You like a good story? Deus Ex, Shenmue, Heavy Rain, Mass Effect.

@beeyotch23 Hand to hand combat in the game is weak, apparently the ability to move while prone has been taken out, the AI isn't outstanding and seems to have some flaws, and the level structure in the game feels too closed in. It's structured in a very linear way which isn't good for what is supposed to be a stealth game. Stealth games should allow you multiple paths into different areas, encouraging the player to think more like a spy. To me it seems like gameplay was an afterthought again.

Don't judge the combat at what you see from Phil's gameplay, when i watched his Dragon Age 2 video's i found them boring and thought the combat sucked, but after going to my local Civic Video and renting the game, i discovered the combat was actually fun and the story was great. trust me, what you see on a video and what you experience yourself are completely different things...

Maybe you disagree with my viewpoints, but telling me to experience something in order to make an assessment is bad argument if you don't consider the fact that it's possible to get some idea of whether a game would appeal to you. If you got every game based on "I have to experience this myself" then you'd be broke, know what I'm sayin?

@SlySpy91 Yeah that is true, but you have to play a game to get the real feel of it, everybody knows that. Yes you can see if the game appeals to you or not from videos and what not, but playing it is different. It's not bad argument at all, i trust more a person who had played the game than a review, mostly because most reviews are fake and are paid off by Companies to give good reviews. That is why you rent games to try them out, not just go out and buy one.

The story line is good and I love that there is always an theme for each game. It makes for great personal reflection. Especially MGS2 after what happened in Iran/China, but even though the story is good, it is still very confusing and a silly sometimes. With MGS you have to be ready for long drawn out CS and put your brain at the door.
