I assume you thaught english there? Do you actually need to be a native speaker to teach english in Taiwan or is fluency sufficient?

@elgagalari They're quite determined that you speak English as a first language. Just because you've got to know all the spelling and grammar rules and they love the American accent for some strange reason.

@kameelperdkol thanks for your reply! Actually I am Swiss citizen and have got an american accent since I have been working for a US company for a while. So it would not be a visa requirement to be native speaker? And what are the chances of getting accepted without actual teaching diploma, but with the cambridge proficiency diploma? I just married a Taiwanese girl and I consider moving from USA to Taiwan with her. I have done a lot of "google-ing" and "youtube-ing" about Taiwan and it seems like an awesome place. Many foreigners live there and they seem quite happy.

Hmmm... the Paragliding was done in Taitung county. It's about 1 hour drive out of Taitung on the East Coast. It's gorgeous there.

Yeah. We got a number of construction workers from Thailand and Indonesia. Some phillipinos, vietnam work in factory here. I wonder if you are from these countries. If you are a English (or other "major" languages) native speaker, you may find a translation job in Taiwan.

If you're married to a Taiwanese you can get a marriage visa (JFRV). Then you can work anywhere. But construction pays poorly. For translation you'd need a good level of Mandarin (and a qualification) and for editing you'd need some experience and/or qualifications.

Might be difficult, but it's not impossible...

thanks for the advise. i dont mind teaching if i live in asia but id rather do part time teaching. and i used to study woodwork so id like to carry on with this job. even if it is low wadge.just as a hobby,for health as well. it would also help me learn mandarin in this environment. could it be possible to help out a carpenter for cash in hand work, if im not marrried? what you think?

Yes it's quite true that Taiwanese people treat foreigners better than their own people. The whole world could really take a lesson from them in at least this one respect. They value the type of knowledge that comes from exploring cultures and the world, a natural inquisitiveness that is missing from many Americans. (I know less of other countries, but I assume it's not only Americans who are like this though.)

I moved to the States from Taipei, Taiwan 8 or 9 years ago and haven't gone back since. I've pretty much forgotten how it was like living in Taiwan. All I can recall is the humidity and mosquitoes :S
