  • Mind blown. Hauntingly awesome! I think I like the live version better though. The harp sounds so much better

  • holyshit how can andy samberg stil date her omg

  • Reminds me of Daniel Johnston

  • Love the chorusy PEACH, PLUM ,PEAR part....epic

  • Jesus Christ is she for real, this really sucks!!! Sounds like a strangulated baby.

  • @rsalceda shows how much you know about music.

  • Her voice hardly sounds like this in her new album, it's become more 'conventional' I guess. Listen to it! She's amazing all around..

  • Her singing isnt amazing but she has such an addictive baby voice and her lyrics are both relatable and unlike any ive heard. id rather hear her honest voice than an autotuned mess

  • this is amazing

  • Good fucking heaven, this is excessively good. I must be only imagining this song

  • THIS GARBAGE REMINDS ME OF A HONDA AND ITS SHITTY 4 CYLINDER. IT SUCKS. TOO BAD ITS NOT A V8.

  • First of all, this chick is hardly gorgeous. Second, this song is just absolutely awful. I'm not trying to hate. The concept of an indie harpist sounded intriguing, but this just a bunch of noise. How can u justify that this is talented music. The sounds like an 8 year old playing the harp sound on a casino whailing in a basement.

  • @gweiss27 It's called polyrhythm. It means she's playing two completely separate rhythms, one with each hand. You couldn't do it if you had a thousand lifetimes to try in. :P

As for looks, Google image search her name; images 2 and 8 on page two should do. As for talent, she is one of the most universally acclaimed artists to appear in the 2000's, but I suppose you know more than the world's collective music critic community? :P

  • @gweiss27 forgot to mention: while interweaving two different rhythms with her hands, her voice is elaborating yet a third. The beauty of the piece lies in the patterns created by the interplay of these phrases. The reason it sounds weird to you is that in traditional Western music, we are accustomed to the vocals sticking fairly uniformly to the underlying beat of the music, not being used as a rhythmic counterpoint.

I thought the point of art was to *create*. Why want everything the same?

  • I always found something so catchy about this tune.

    Dat harpsichord.

  • I can totally understand how her voice would annoy people but I personally love it. Fantastic song writer

  • Hello, I'm doing a music project and for some research i'd really love to know what Joanna Newsomes TARGET AUDIENCE is or at least what it is mainly e.g AGE GROUPS? I believe music is for anyone but it is a question i have to answer by the book x any answers welcome just need help and dont be worried about sharing your own age, who cares really!!! xxx

  • @jenandthumper

This video is most popular with:

    Gender Age

    Female 13-17

    Female 18-24

    Male 25-34

There's a statistics button next to the view count with more info like this. Hope it helps!

  • @exidorsadoptedson "This video is most popular with:

It seems that guys have to grow up to like this music.

  • She's very musically inclined and she's just gorgeous, but her singing just annoys me so much. I can't help it. It's too fake and theatrical. I've tried to like it and I just can't.

  • she sounds like bob dylan trying to sing opera. wich sounds great, ofc

  • I'm going to admit it her voice can be slightly really annoying, however the harmony, the concept of the song is just priceless, amazing, speechless. If the vocals were slightly different I'm sure more people would appreciate the song. But it's not gonna, so enjoy the beauty that is Joanna Newsom.

  • Awesome song, but I'm just going to point out that at one point in this video a raccoon is on a little girls back. A raccoon. On a child's back.

  • Vocally -- a innovative young woman. Instrumentally -- the harp is quick paced, new instrument, bursting forth with her style. Lyrically -- just like normal music really, it however isn't auto tuned or altered to sound like someone she is not. On every level a masterpiece.

  • What in the actual fuck

  • @ariismyagent Yes. :)

  • @ariismyagent Don't be the Actual moron.

  • @Zephollus Im not a moron im an intelligent person thank you very much. I have an opinion and am free to comment. If u have one you are also free to comment but leave me alone. Im obviously not the only one who thinks this is a disaster so please... don't even go there. If you want to leave a nice comment I'm not gonna reply to it with a 5th grade insult. I respect others opinions. You are going to have a hard time in life if you feel the need to call out everyone who disagrees with u

  • I really really can't.

  • I remeber the first time I heard this back in 2007

  • I made my friend watch this stoned and she's freaking out in the corner. She says "THIS IS WHY PEOPLE ARE SERIAL KILLERS HIS IS WHY PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE"

  • Vocally – a demented she-gnome or the half-idiot sister of a Laura Ingalls frontier family. Instrumentally – the harp is a total gimmick. Lyrically – a "sluttish hullabaloo of words and phrases." On every level a failure.

  • @BscarfaceM that was hilarious, thx needed the laugh 2n-

  • @BscarfaceM He super mad

  • Hey JN fans, im PUPSKI...from Auckland NEW ZEALAND. Check my music out, and subscribe if you like my sound :) help me out...cheers guys xx

  • does that old chick from poltergeist sing this?

  • Better than mainstream "pop" and "rock" that so many listen to today. As I say, everyone is entitled to opinions, but no one is entitled to listen to crap music such as One Direction or Lady Gaga. I'd rather have the wonderful Joanna Newsom than Katy Perry anyday.

  • I love Joanna Newsom. I miss this voice, her old one, before it changed due to the vocal chord nodules. However, her new voice is softer, which appeals to some. I feel so sorry for those who don't appreciate this lyrical genius.

  • wow this fucking sucks wtf is this shit?! I feel like my ears are bleeding. This is a hoax right?

  • This is so awesome...for some reason

  • Every fibre in my being tells me to hate this yet, I love it. Touché Joanna.

  • ooh i love rigid people. tho nothing compares to joanna newsom, her instrumentation and voice;)

  • She's so overrated. If you guys like the way she sings then you should spend a day at my mothers house.

  • @lindemikko

    PLEASE!!!!

  • @lindemikko Guess what kid, people have different tastes. Terrible world it is huh?

  • @Ln192

Yes it is indeed a terrible world but it has nothing to do with Joanna or her fans. I just made the joke the Joanna's shrill is comparable to the sound of my mother singing. The comment was meant to be humorous and not to be taken seriously. But that should go without saying with any youtube comment. Lighten up.

  • @lindemikko ''Lighten up.'' -someone who gets passive aggressive over a youtube comment. So cute ;-)

  • Why do i really like this?

  • she sounds like a witch. any one that actually enjoys listening to her voice must be clinically insane.

  • Love it, great job!

  • :D Sooo..... happy making!!

  • My... ears... bleed...

  • Her songs are like the way Virginia Woolf writes

  • this song is still so, so perfect ugh

  • this is the song our band is built on

    check us out :)

  • Listening to this it's like being in an alternative reality in which Lisa Simpson was real, grew up, and became a songwriter. this is how she'd sound; clever, musical, and endearing.

  • I love her music so much. ..

  • Comment removed

  • @emixorose it's andy......samberg...........

  • "I have read the right books to interpret your looks" - This line alone made me love this song

  • She actually has a really nice voice. I wonder why she doesn't sing using it. Her newer songs stay truer to her real voice. Such a talented musician, pulling something like this. I guess it has a different flavor, but I really would rather she sing using her talking voice.

  • @deathlightning55 This song wouldn't have gotten half the attention it did if she sang it in her talking voice, besides which there's more than enough cookie cutter "talents" out there trying to sound like each other. Thanks God for people who dare to be original, even if only for a single track or album. The radio is absolutely dreadful these days.

  • @deathlightning55 Uh actually... her voice is different in the newer songs because she got vocal cord nodules and it changed her voice

  • I see how she's an acquired taste, but she's definitely my kind of music.

  • omg what is that sample from, ive heard it somewhere i just cant remember

  • my hamster sings along to this

  • I like the lyrics, but Im sorry, her voice just makes my eye twitch. Not saying its bad, just.... It just. Its something you need to be in the right mood and not have twitchy eyes.

  • This made tears. Couldn't tell you if they were good or bad ones though.

  • I love Joanna Newsom, so much!! T-T she is so adorable. Like the most beautiful and best things in this life, she is not for everyone.

  • this video is adorable.

    lovee her

  • Glad it's not "everyones" cup of tea.It gives us that do an exclusiveness into a special club. Welcome to the Joanna Newsome appreciation club...

  • This is hilarious.

  • why do i keep coming back to this video...? haha :)

  • Imagine waking up and having your house be silent and you hear her.

  • Wish I could play the harpsichord :]

  • I will admit that the first time I heard her, I was a little iffy.

And yet here I am again.

All the songs I have heard by her I have so far loved.

  • I can see why people might be put off by her voice. I loved it immediately.

  • Whoa people, just be open to different things, and sounds, don't be so scared!

  • Joanna Newsom is the only artist that I like through-and-through besides Marilyn Manson and Nirvana. All of her albums are her best albums. All of her songs are her best songs. I love her.

  • I thought she was like 100 when i first heard her.

  • I don't understand how someone can sing in a silly voice and be classed as "genius".

  • okay, when i first heard this song, i fucking loved her voice. i didn't have to warm up to it or anything. so good.

  • Does anyone else just have nights where you listen to and watch nothing but Joanna Newsom? I call them weekdays.

  • @Gallas1000 Damn right!

  • @Gallas1000 *weeknights

  • @Gallas1000 I'd call that feeling suicidal, or the music would make me feel that way. o.O

  • @Gallas1000 no, sometimes i want to kill myself though.

  • @Gallas1000

I kind of think I could not do that. XD

  • She is just beyond amazing<3

  • Fuck, I love this song so much...

  • Original and brilliant....

  • reminiscent of kate bush

  • Am I the only one who thinks she sounds like Lil from Rugrats?

  • @jesseEar528 hmmm maybe so but how about Alfalfa ( little rascals)?

  • @jesseEar528 Dude i give you the most insane props. Once i youtubed that, i started cracking up. That was like my child hood and that was hilarious hahahaha.

  • Compelling voice and lovely video. I love the girl riding the tricycle with the racoon on her back, lol. 2:55

  • this is what my cat would sound like if she could sing :)

  • Many may hate it.. But I just can't get enough.

  • nanannanananananananananana nanana na

    I love her thou.

  • Neo-Nazis clearly don't approve of Newsom.

Yet more confirmation of her brilliance.

  • she's magic

  • She sounds like Snow White, and I mean that in the best way possible.

  • I'm speechless, but not in a good way.

  • @florestiner12312 ...Why?

  • its definitely not 'bold like a horse'

  • I love her but she sounds a little like Olive Oyl in this song. I still love this song :) She sounds different now though doesn't she?

  • She has a beautiful voice, if only the music were better written.

  • Everyone hates this song until they listen to it about a billion times... but that one billion and first time you hear it, it is love. <3

  • ugh, i love the music an the songs are written so well. and i know this has been said a million times, but i just can not stand her voice. i keep giving it chances and i just cant do it.

  • what kind of music is this? its definitely new, but by an old soul. there is some old-world in this. its good, but im afraid i cant listen to it. its too sad. just one listening and i almost started tearing up.

  • @todtubetod She's definitely neo-something, not sure what, but I can't stop listening. Someway she manages to sing sad/funny at the same time.

  • I never thought of her voice as being all that weird or unusual, I just thought of it as hers. Then again I listen to some bizarre stuff, like ... .

  • she kinda sounds like Shirley Temple!

  • oh my god flash backs! i used to LOVE this song. and i still do!

  • Her voice is so high, it can only be heard by angels.

  • @hadeninae And wonderful people who appreciate it.

  • @hadeninae So by saying her voice is high, you're saying you can hear it, so you're an angel?

  • @mdonoyan1 Yes. No I have no idea. I'm trying to make a comment that refers to Joanna Newsom as some sort of higher being AGH

  • Beautifully written

  • sauce on video matched to the musack, pl0x'n'thnks?

  • It's a nice song, but I really wish she'd get someone else to sing it. It's like being on a bus with a five-year whose mother won't tell her to shut the hell up, because she wants her precious little angel to express herself

  • @marmadukejones There's a very nice cover by a dude with a violin, however, her voice is ONE OF A KIND. So wether you like it or not, respect it, at least. :)

  • @FreddieMercuryOwns Owen Pallet. Its a beautiful cover. :)

  • i aint even arsed if i get called hipster douche for loving her.

  • i get the feeling like..if i was in a house..being stalked by a killer..she would be singing la la la la laaa la...just standing in a hallway by herself.

  • @soldierlopez Thanks for the nightmares.

  • @soldierlopez Haha! Possibly the best comment I've read about her voice. I love her music, but this is so true.

  • try it at 2x speed LOL

  • You know what I really hate? When people hear me listening to her and automatically start bashing her voice. Like really? Just shut the hell up. Who the fuck cares? Have you ever LISTENED to the lyrics? Do they not mean anything to you? I feel like her voice, even though now it's changed quite a bit, is enchanting. I love it. I don't care if it sounds "weird". She's awesome.

  • WHY is she dating Andy Samburg!!?!?!?!?! She needs to date me..

  • why are so many people scared to admit to like this song??... scared to be different that is..

  • Sounds like snow white...

  • i like sprout and bean better. the strangers brought me to it lol

  • where am i

  • Her voice is cute aha

  • Wolf Gang.

  • @HeyImNicky what does that have to do with joanna newsom?

  • @vibronicz Nothing. I hearts Joanna Newsssom. Her new album is much better than mild eyed mender.

  • i'm in love

  • This is just awesome :D

  • Why does she sound like Betty Boop?

  • why do i like this so much?

  • weird and brilliant

  • she is not tonedeaf :) she just has a different voice. pretty!

  • @Lilyfloss

Who said she was tone deaf? That's hilarious. God, I wonder what color is the sky in that person's world!

  • @PoorRichardSaunders i dunno :P doesn't mean that somebody said if i say that she is not tonedeaf.. it was a compliment so sorry..

  • i don't care if I'm not supposed to love it! SHE ROCKS KITTEN STYLE!

  • her voice is like a witch's O.o

  • Why... is this... so... addicting...???

  • I love her voice.. its so different! KI love Joanna, never change

  • <3

  • When I first heard newsom, I couldn't bear her voice. But gave it a few go's and really listened to the lyrics and they're so good they're just on a complete different level to anything else out there. Now when I listen to her music, I just can't imagine anybody else singing it. The beauty of the lyrics is intertwined with the uniqueness of her voice.

  • i love the lyrics but yes her voice kinda kills it for me. she obviously is making her voice sound that way. i cant see how that's her natural singing voice. if she was more natural about it and didn't try to sound like olive oyl she could probably get a pretty good following. i do enjoy her music but yes an acquired taste.....

  • @gypsygraffiti Hahah that's how I feel about Cradle of Filth. Yes, I have diverse music tastes...

  • She can't sing, for god's sake. What's wrong with people?

  • @therealsweep If you can get past the odd vocals, the songwriting will fucking blow you away. Anyways, her voice is much better now; listen to her recent stuff.

  • I didn't know lisa simpson had an album

  • first time it was strange but subtly good, 2nd time ITS FUCKING AWESOME

  • 539 people dislike this, and i respect their choices. its an aquired taste.
