  • I said I'd laugh if this was "When Daisies Pied", it is so I laughed. It's such a fun song. I was rather horrified to learn what it was about after learning it when I was 10........Very embarrassing. Joan sang this soo well, especially the cuckoos!!!!

It's the kind of thing one wouldn't imagine her to sing in a thousand years and yet she did :)

  • what year was this? she looks very young...and thats not her 60s hair

  • @skitzo429 In one of the other clips from this programme it said 1961.

  • @MadonnaImperia the hair gave it away

  • @skitzo429 I love her 60's hair - my friend and I lovingly refer to it as her helmet :D

  • When shepherds pipe on oaten straws, And merry larks are ploughmen's clocks, When turtles tread, and rooks, and daws, And maidens bleach their summer smocks, The cuckoo, then on ev'ry tree Mocks married men, for thus sings he, Cuckoo,Cuckoo, cuckoo: o word of fear, Unpleasing to a married ear.

  • Sutherland wil always be the greatest (in my opinion); however, there are some lovely young sopranos making their mark. Sarah Coburn is indeed one; check out Emma Matthews on YouTube as well. Quite impressive in a similar repertoire.

  • THIS is well positioned singing through the mask! Fantastic Sutherland...

  • Arne is a composer that isn't sung enough.

  • Agreed.

  • Where are the lush and flexible instruments like these nowadays?

  • Retired or dead, sadly. :(. There's a new girl called Sarah Coburn who's the best soprano I've heard since Sutherland retired.
