I've been trying to put my finger on what's wrong with this version-to me-and I think I have it. Peter is of course excellent, but I think the fault lies with the orchestra. It's as if they're trying to superimpose "Eleanor Rigby" on top of "On The Border" and, well, it's a very unique sound, isn't it?! I'm sitting here like, "why is that song so choppy", when I'm used to a smooth, powerful song..it's hard to explain. Strings would have worked well here if done right, I don't know.
@IrisMG Well it is down to the mix really. The strings were supposed to add to the band- yes there is a band playing but you don't hear them. Drums, bass and keyboards.. Look at Al- her is strumming but you don't really hear it in the mix.
So yes it does sound a bit choppy with teh violins so prominent but certainly different and exciting- a nice change from the way we recorded it back in 1976! Peter White
The song fluke soon gets through your system(though it is still a great song) but the guitar playing of this guy is awesome. I have this vid in my favorites. I <3 Guitar musical instrument.

Al Stewart stills in better shape( with more hair and without belly) in this one and Peter great as usually.

You are so right...the strings slow the tempo dramatically.
The simple bassline on the recorded/album version drive the song and allow Als vocal to soar and hit home alot more.
This version is the last thing one wants to hear when we go to a concert...

The guitarists Al Stewart is using these days are very very good, but Peter White is the BEST!

If you ever get a chance to see Peter White in concert, do it. Trust me!!

Modern music sounds so much better with an orchestra. Check out Metallica playing with the San francisco Philharmonic!
