  • Zonrryx dude ur fucking dumb u don't know how hard this is he played it really good

  • Ez nagyon jó. (This is very good)

  • man Dr. Takacs you still amaze me to this day with this song

  • @vysuvius Thanks!

  • Variation 4 literally sounds like two trumpets playing simultaneously...I have no idea how anyone has the air and tonguing power to do that. It astounds me!

  • @UrItalianStallion It's a tough one!

  • и это профессор oO произведение сложное, конечно, но играет он его как-то криво)

  • this is definantly one of the best versions of carnival on trumpet ive heard on youtube. you are awesome. loved it.

  • @mrben772 Thank you very much! Very nice of you to say!

  • Awesome... I play trumpet too, but this is just impossible^^

  • @LezFetz keep practicing!

  • Respekt :-) Super gespielt ich übe jetzt auch schon 2 Monate dran ...

  • hey, great performance!! I specially enjoyed the last variation because I know it demands a lot of concentration :)

  • @xaviercastella Thank you so much for your kind words.

  • @rvzoo23fs Thank you very much!

  • Nice performance, congratulations. For those who detected some (small) mistakes, just try to play it in public... if there is not a high difficulty in the sequence of notes, intervals are sometimes high and the tongue work is exhausting. Playing this *is* a performance.

I'm happy to see that this funny air i learned 30 y ago with my french teatcher in Paris is still played... overseas.

  • @justinallnbob If you have an Arbans book i believe its on page 338. If you dont have one, i would highly suggest you get one as in my opinion that's the trumpeters bible (:

  • no esta mal, pero hay momentos en los que desafina y otros en los que falla en el doble picado. pero buen intento d todos modos

  • Hey ^_^ I know this might be a bit much to ask, but how much does it cost to buy this variation? I've been looking for a good one and this sounds like fun =D so if you could tell me a websight to find an arrangement to purchase I would greatly appreciate it ^_^

  • @justinallnbob If you have an Arban book, you can find it in the solo section near the back. If you don't have one, search a popular sheet music webiste like sheet music plus for it. I bet it's not too expensive.

  • @wjtakacs Thank you very much. I will be sure to look for it :)

  • i will do my best!!:)

  • im working on this right now and it is sooo..... hard!! ~Trumpet~

  • Just keep working! Time and efficient practice will get you there!

  • Wow, that was almost unreal!

  • Thank you!

  • very nice, hey, who wrote this musical work?

  • Thank you! It's by Jean Baptiste Arban.

  • @periosa174

I'm not sure where it originated, because I'm pretty sure it's just a traditional folk tune, but this theme and variations arrangement was written by Jean Baptiste Arban (big pink book dude)

  • Este gringo que estude mais,

  • Wow. Just wow. Amazingly done, my good sir!

  • Thank you very much!

  • credo !!! que som mais feio !!!! alem de feio nao tem nem uma dinamica affff

  • NO ONE SPEAKS FRENCH HERE!!!!

  • Breathtaking! Brilliantly done.. Teach me? haha :)

  • Thank you! Come to WT and I'll be happy to teach you!

  • Dr. Takacs, fantastic playing my friend. Keep inspiring!

  • Thank you very much! I'll do my best!

  • What kind of trumpet r u using

  • It's an Edwards Generation III.

  • would you think that a bobby shew lightweight signature model is better?

  • Haven't tried it. I'm sure it's very good.

  • that solo was absolutely breathtaking! You did such an amazing job. I want to do this one for solo and ensemble in my state.

  • That's very nice of you to say! Thank you! Good luck preparing it - with patience and hard work you can do it. :-)

  • Fantastic Dr W T Best Trumpet version I have ever heard . Your Students are very lucky to have you .

    Bob in the UK

  • Thank you so very much! I really appreciate the kind words!

  • Insanely good. He beasted that song. Seems like the piano player was trying to keep up with him LOL. Excellent tonguing!!!!

  • You are very kind - thank you!

  • he plays really good!

  • One more thin, I noticed you played the whole song. Most people leave out the last couple of movements lol.

  • Im all about the UT band, but I have mad respect now for A&M. Thanx for sharing. You play beautifully. Guess thats why your a professor! Ha!

  • Geez Takacs. i've watched this video like a gazillion times and every time I am in awe.

I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve for this year!!

  • Thanks, Rachael! It's kind of hard to top the Carnival of Venice, but I'll see what I can pull out of the hat for this year!

  • That was great lol! I don't go to the school or anything but whatever you do next year or this year rather, make sure it gets on Youtube =D

  • Thank you very much!

  • The best version i ever heard was by david childs.

  • Nobody takes the double octave run at the end. Not that I expect them to, it just seems like more of these phenomenal players would at least try for it.

  • wynton marsalis also does it ..

i think he plays the best version of this song

  • yes :D i have the same opinionm like you ;-)

  • Ruben Samaeo, Italian Child Prodigy, also takes it up

  • well thats how the composer intended it to be so why not.

  • Im Tempo haperts !!

  • VERY GOOD !

  • way to go professor ;) i dont know you but your rocked it pretty good. way to show the piano player who the boss is.

  • Great, great trumpet solo.

But...the piano...oh well. Whatever. Trumpet players are used to having to set tempos. Even in the best of symphonies, conductors can get lost...not unheard of for a principle trumpet to lay the smack down on a few notes to help everyone get back on beat.

It's not an ego thing, either. It's just a very audible instrument, so it does the job.

  • Very well done Bill :) I miss all you folks over there in Canyon...hope all is going well!

  • Thank you very much! We miss you too! Who is this again? lol

  • Matt Scott. Was there your first year.

  • Oh, cool! Good to hear from you!

  • takacs you crack me up. :)

  • Whats he wearing? Haha

    Informal concert.. haha get it?

And i dont like the piano players tempos.. :S confusing

  • Lol my sister went to WTAMU like 9 years ago i didnt even know they had a music program.

Canyon is such a tiny town.

  • 1.Them as can, do - them sa can't, teach!

2.The teacher needs to be just a week ahead of the student.

    3. It would be better with trousers!

    4. Quite a worthy effort though but.

  • great job. the last one is the best to play i reckon

  • nice. other than the pros like vizzutti that is the best I have heard.

  • this is the origional arban version. vizzutti and such do their own version and twists

  • oh yes and it was an amazing live performance i was there as well

  • Always a pleasure hearing your music, im doing this as my solo for this year, btw this is your old neighbor david

  • He's not speeding, he's controlling the tempo of the music that he's playing to help with the way that he would like to express the piece. As the soloist one of the best things you can do it meld the piece to yourself and ad your own flare to it. This includes varying the speed of the piece.

  • and you probably sound like shit. don't compare yourself to a musician like this until you really know what you're talking about. there's so much musicality and nuance to this that you wont be able to do for years. just because the first page isn't really technically demanding, doesn't make it easy.

  • agreed with schultzy

  • yea this guy does an amazing job. and in my opinion you shouldnt add your own style to the piece. the composer wrote it how he wanted it to go. thats how you should play it.

  • so youre saying it should sound exactly the same every time?.....why even bother playing it on other instruments?

  • Not bad at all. Congrats!

  • pinche panzon toca bien FEO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I played that solo. Oh, and I have played on that same stage too.

  • bravo ma niente di che

  • Nice to hear the Arban's version. Everyone seesm to play the Staigers version.

  • Wow that was amazing. Can you transfer to the University of Louisville here in KY? I'd love to take some lessons....the last time I heard this song played this well is when my friend Barry Hudson played it in a DCI individual solo competition when we marched Star of Indiana in 1988. Believe it or not he performed it on 2 valve bugle...Amazing work Dr....5*'s

  • thank you very much

  • Nice shorts.

  • holy crap! my jaw was open like the whole time, this is pimpin :DD

  • Crazy song.

  • maybe it's just the A/V quality . . . but there are lots of dynamics in there that i just didnt hear.

but not bad considering he probably just dusted it off a couple days before playing at that band camp faculty thing.

  • you really nailed it im learning this on baritone/euphonium i have the first two variations they are the easiest though LOL but the pianist could have stopped a true solo would have sufficed but excellent job and great tone

  • Holy freaking crap. That was amazing, especially that last part. If only the audio quality didn't suck... I'll definitely never be able to play this (but then, it's probably way harder on trombone)

  • I remember that, i was there!! it was freakin amazing!!! i only wish i could sound that good on trumpet!!

  • It's Impossible,WOW!!!

  • That was phenomenal

  • i play this its quite easy once you've practised it !

  • Holy cow! My instructor wanted me to play this!! I'm not even sure I can now. Eep!! Forget Sprite! this is my motivation!!!

  • i've watched this video like a thousand times and every time i watch it i'm just in awe of how amazingly difficult this song is. i was sitting next to ekehart [[geoff]] and i was liking FUH-FREAKiNG OUTTTT. hardcore. seriously.

  • Thanks Rachael!

  • sounds like you missed some notes - or maybe it's just the low quality video

  • Try as I might, I am not perfect...

  • Hehe...I was there. Sitting next to a trumpet player. Hehe...You were rather fantastic.

  • I appreciate that very much. That is very kind of you. Could this be... Santos???

  • uma porcaria!!!!!!!!!!!!!!the chet!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pretty damn good for a guy dressed in shorts and sneakers. Why didn't he wear just a bathing suit?

  • I had a little two-piece polka dot number I was going to wear, but my wife talked me out of it. :-)

  • So did Dr. Cox do the sweet camera work?

  • lol - no, my wife did it on a tiny little digital camera. Not bad for something really only meant to take pictures!

  • I was there when he did this. It was AMAZING. I

'm trying the arrangement for alto sax.

  • Thanks! Have fun with it!

  • well that... was a solid performance. wow. i had the book in front of me... i did not catch any flaws... yea that may seem lame... but im in high school and want to play this- so i figure that listening to the best of the best play it could help... but yea- that was a really good performance :-)

  • I really appreciate the compliment. Thank you very much. With patient, slow practice, you can play it too. Good luck!

  • this may be a stretch- but do you happen to know anybody named sean furilla, joe villanelli, or lee guiessler would you?????

  • Those names don't ring a bell for me...

  • thats depressing- our marching band has associations with the cadets and i thought that you could possibly be friends with furilla- hes the brass instructor there- oh well never mind

  • good.

  • Wat to go Doc! Super! Bravo! Magnifico!

  • thats awesome. its so much fun to play. if only i could play all of it =/

  • Nice "Texas tux", y'all...

  • I wasn't aware that you had to wear a tux to perform a solo.

  • You don't have to. That's what makes it such a humorous comment...

  • that's not what he was saying, but nice try.

  • great work takacs. can anyone play the final variation without mistakes? could arban himself? I have never heard it done.

  • listen to sergei nakariakov play it he does it flawlessly

  • yes, agreed. I could hear no mistakes in the final variation. His playing does not move me, however. It is a bit soft for me. Not bold and forthright. Also, I did not approve of the ending flourish, which does not come from Arban. Finally, the playing of the concertgebouw orchestra was a distraction for me. I prefer a piano accompaniment. Thanks for pointing me to Nakariakov.

  • let me add that for me the finest recorded version of the Arban Carnival of Venice is that done by Gerard Schwarz, former principal trumpeter with the NY Philharmonic and now director of the Seattle Symphony. Unfortunately there are no examples of his rendition on YouTube.

  • Listen to the version performed by Wynston Marsalis, you'll be moved, I guarantee it!

  • Al Vizzutti, Rafael Mendez, Bohumir Kryl,Herbert L Clarke, Walter Rogers, ........

  • im pretty sure wynton marsalis could

  • Great performance! We try to do this piece sometimes but usually end up in laughter after a few notes...

  • I'm working on those variations myself. I'm in 11th grade in Ontario, Canada. I'm having a really hard time with increasing my double tounging speed. I have it to about 60% of the tempo I want it, is there any other suggestions anyone has of how I could increase my double tounging speed other than practicing it on scales? (I do that for about 2 hours a day.)

  • I'd suggest long tones, twisters, and do the twisters steccaddo, and speed them up little by little until you're going as fast as you can. After all that try to push yourself a little faster each practice.

  • triple tounging

  • Bill, that's pretty sick dude!!

    nicely done,

    by the way go canes

  • the outfit is cool 8) :D

  • lol - yep, it was a casual performance, to say the least!

  • I love the bit with the high twiddly bits followed by the accented low note. you played it fabulouytoo. :D

  • a bit too fast for my liking....but then again, he's just enjoying himself!

and...that's the most important thing about making music = )

  • Don't forget to site the composer Giovanni Bottesini. Del Staigers was the arranger. Bottesini wrote the Opera, and wrote a variation of it for the Double Bass (standup) his instrument. One of the greatest bassist of all time. Good to give credit where credit is due

  • Excellent. This Arbans is much harder than Clark or Steigers, and you maxed it. Congratulations

  • sick dude

  • I like his outfit:-D

  • you rock out loud man! dododo dum dee dum lol it's harder than piano...

  • Ah, yes, memories. Trumpet prof. Dr. Frank Elsas UT Austin was our guru/mentor/idol (up w/Rafael Mendez)at band camp circa the 1950s. Thanks Dr. Takacs!

  • Otimo

  • Great job!

When I heard the speed of the first theme, I noticed it was faster than what I've heard Nakarikov, & Marsalis play, but even though you took it up, you still did a great job!

  • its all personal preference...........

  • dood. takacs is freaking hardcore. i can't wait till band camp next year when i have my braces off so we can actually improve something wiht my playing, not just play awesome duets. AHHAHA that one piece that i just could not play. haha..gooood times

    I LOVE DR.T!!

  • I was very lucky to see this performance and it was amazing. I just sat in my chair in total awe from your performance. I'm a clarinet player yet I once tried to play trumpet. It is not easy and for a person to be able to play this is totally mind blowing.

  • dr. takacs was my trumpet teacher at band camp this year both for private lessons and sectionals and trumpet ensemble and the biggest thing that i admire about him is how down to earth and willing to help he is. dr.t if your reading this, you truely are an ispiration to all young trumpet players and we all love you soooo much!!!

  • Wow, I think that is the nicest compliment I have received in 12 years of teaching. Thank you so much - it is really appreciated. I absolutely love teaching and I am very fortunate to work with such great students!!! :-)

  • awes, I never told you that? <3 badass takacs! you need to write some badass takacs etudes. For real. Call it that too. I'll buy several copies and sell them to trumpet players in my band. Tell them, I studied from this man. :D

  • lol - that's hilarious! I'll get to work... :)

  • woaaa Dr. your students love you, what a nice message!!! , i love the fact that you were there to enjoy just the music, and you are doing a lot of love with the music....BEST

  • I concur, he was part of my applied lessons (I had the professor half time), and Dr. Takacs was awesome. Besides that he's an awesome trumpet player (my personal favorite was his performance of the Enesco Legend... a big man fit himself into his trumpet and brought the music to life!), he was also genuinely concerned about the future of his students' trumpet playing. Practice, and strive for your full potential, and he'll be pleased. Don't be a slacker like me! ;X

  • takacs is a stud.

    the live performance was amazing.

  • I WAS THERE!! i think everyone was blown away buy takacs! i'm totally going here for college..i <3 wtamu!

  • yay band camp. i saw this performance. dr. takacs is the BEST

  • i was there!!! dr.takas was great!!! why dont more people post videos from band camp??? that would be so cool if they did!

  • Dude that was totally awesome i was there woot woot go band camp!! :]

  • I was there, Loved it! Great Job!

  • i was totally there on the front row! sheesh it was jaw dropping i lvoed it! haha

  • I was at this performance. It was spectacular!

  • Ahhhhh, memories of band camp....this one time..well,nevermind. Great playing!

  • Nice job - but on trumpet ??? For shame for shame. Now get that cornet out. And don't forget the deeeep mpc. :-) :-)

  • BAD...ASS...TAKACS! :D

The piano part is a bit weird. The low parts are so thick, it sounds a little muddy on this recording. I'm sure it's just the recording.

  • I see now. I didn't recognize it on the piano for some reason. Great job though!

  • Awesome performance!!

  • Strange piano part, I have never heard that version before.

  • It's the Donald Hunsberger arrangement, as heard on Wynton Marsalis' "Carnaval" CD, except with piano of course. :)

  • Fantastic, i liked the tempo and that double tonguing on the last movement was excellent.
