The 2000 acres figure is a lie. Senator Stevens of Alaska wrote into the legislation that the total footprint of the WELLHEADS could add up to no more than 2000 acres. Meaning that any other land use associated with drilling, like roads and support facilities, wouldn't count toward the 2000 acre limit.
