The best thing to do is to always render as pictures.

If your pc crashes, it's no problem at all, just start rendering again, no frames lost.

I use the .tif format.

When you rendered all your pictures, just use blender to save them as a video by using the build in video editor. Add Images -> Make your render settings -> Hit render. Done. This will take only a few seconds, because you already rendered all the pictures.

You can even change colors and stuff in the video editor, too.

dont just click render with blender, this video's very old, but just in case! Go to render settings and where it says "JPEG" or whatever, click that and change it to something like "Quicktime' or "AVI RAW" But avi's are very big so...
