  • 70 yeas & 62 nays. This is heartbreaking and such a close victory too. I know gay marriage will be accepted throughout all 50 states, but it is going to take a long fight, one that will undoubtedly be won by the time the next generation takes office. There's going to be a youth revolution, and i will be apart of it. I'll voice my opinion. I just don't understand why you would "no" to couples who want to get married. There's no point behind it. I'm straight, but I'll support gay ppl all the way.

Yes the issues of love and marriage are similar in same-sex versus polygamous marriage, but they are too different to be compared equally. The polygamy arguement is marriage between more than one wife. The real issue is marriage between heterosexual couples vs homosexual couples. The variable is gender. Gender vs number of wives are two completely different variables.

Women gaining the right to vote in 1920 was a "fundamental change" to the country, the right to interracial marriage in the mid 20th century was a "fundamental change" and another fundamental change will be marriage equality.     Woman's suffrage and interracial marriage are two distinct things. One was a Constitutional matter and the other a social issue. Both were not handled the same way. I propose to you that Government meddling in peoples lives, gay or straight, is restrictive to personal liberty. That type of fundamental change, dictating who can marry whom, is a line the government need not cross. It is wrong and tyrannical for the government to tell you who can marry is it not? Yes.

Government has always had a role in marriage and it always will, and soon gay marriage will be included in government marriage. If your church wants to pretend that gay marriage doesn't exist, have at it, because all that matters to us is getting the legal rights.

    Yes it is when there are legal benefits and responsibilities. That said, the way to go about it is to separate church from state (now where have I heard that before?). The government should not recognize ANY religious ceremony but should instead offer the legal contract of marriage (or whatever you want to call it, as long as it's the same term for everyone) separate from religion.

  • They actually already do this. You need a legal contract for the government to recognize your marriage, the problem is that the government is allowing religions to dictate how it operates. That's what's wrong here.
