i found a baby magpie running around a the side of a road in an industrial area, so kept it myself, would peck my head to wake me up in the morning, and when in the garden if it saw other magpies it would hide behind me, if on my hand would grip my hand really tight with its feet. maybe it deserted its nest after mum and dad tried to eat it or somet, the only thing which scared it was other magpies
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha....smirk, smirk :-) very amused at all the 'bird experts' asserting that this is NOT a magpie. Whether it talks or not my three-year-old niece could tell me this is a European Magpie - white and black (blue sheen when close up) , with a long tail. Actually disappointed at myself for taking the bait and reacting to such nonsenseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee... sorry just fell off the chair laughing :-)
Rooney is an amazing looking magpie. I have an Australian pet magpie who is in love with my dog. Quite amazing to see. Please check out my vid...'bird loves dog'
It's a black billed magpie. Their black wings and tail have an iridescent blue-green sheen to them that reflects with light. He has the classic white markings of a magpie. What about him makes him not a magpie? The owner obviously knows what he is. She hand raised him, which means she knows about birds, and you see another mag in the background, so she's obviously raised and/or been around a few. Thank ou for the video ladywhispers, despite Roony's little potty mouth, he's very adorable!
I bet magpies are close relatives to velociraptors(small predator dinosaur),smaller than them yes. But they closely resembles the way raptors appear, moves, and acts in pacs.. same does a Magpie.
.
These birds are clever really, smart actually and solves a lot of problems, they even rocognise themselfs in mirrors and are quite cunning in stealing things..
love them, but they also can really be a noice maker if they like to
I love how Rooney has your accent! My dad's aunt had a magpie. She called it like a dog when it was her baby and it bravely walked up to her. She kept it as a pet and it talked better than a parrot! i love your video!
Wow! I knew magpies were the only bird that can pass the self-awareness mirror test, but I didn't know they could talk! We don't have any in Eastern Canada - used to love seeing them when I lived in the UK.
@Yickbob Interestingly enough all crows (corvid family) can learn to talk. I'm pretty sure a few other species of corvids have passed the self-awareness mirror test as well. Some have displayed an aptitude for tool use as well, particularly the New Caledonian crow.
@Zeanu Rooney just learned to speak, it was a real shock to hear him i can telkl you lol..got some more video of him to upload, so will do that soon x
@ladywhispers European magpies believe it or not have nearly the same amount of intelligence as humans their even smarter than chimpanzees and they know its themselves in a mirror than means their sentient.
@ladywhispers European magpies believe it or not have nearly the same amount of intelligence as humans their even smarter than chimpanzees and they know its themselves in a mirror than means their sentient.
@Zeanu Magpies are sone of those birds that mimic other birds in the wild. You can often hear them impersonating another bird, or even engines and sirens! So it's not a big stretch to assume that because this little cutey grew up hearing people talk to him (and probably heard his name ALOT) he has begun to mimic human speech =)
@GlompoFie i've hand raered birds all my life from indian myners to sulfa crested cockatoos. i've heard a lier bird mimic cameras/alarms/other animals including cats"meow" i've hand raered numerous magies & none of them looked like "rooney" or could mimic half the noises you say they can! lthough i had a long billed corella that used to spit/swear/whistle dixy and even sound exactly like a car starting! so it's not imposable! watch lier bird calls on you tube with david attemborough it's great!
@bradlo308 Um just throwing this out their, Roony looks like all the magpies in my area. You just watched a video of him speaking and imitating noises. So what part of this has anything to do with a lyrebird? Earlier I was referring to a magpie. Not a lyrebird. Yes lyrebirds are excellent mimics and can make many amazing noises, but that doesn't mean they are the only ones who can do it. Parrots for instance are able to mimic many things. It's very unprofessional of you to say i'm full of myself
@GlompoFie you're full of yourself! pull your head out of your backside! you've watched david attenborough lier bird calls on youtube & think you know it all!! get out into the real world and look for your self! a magpie can't make half the noises you say without splitting it's tongue in half! they haven't got the vocals from berth!! THAT"S a vetrenarian bird specialist oppinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@bradlo308 And also, for a self proclaimed 'VETERINARIAN bird specialist" you are very closed minded and don't seem to understand birds very well. I'd hate to have you as my vet for any of my birds. Also i've never seen a professional vet use 37 exclamation marks in a single paragraph, as if it will emphasize their point.
@GlompoFie i never once proclaimed to be a vet. it was "a vetrenarian (bird specialist) oppinion" that "they aren't born with the vocals" I added the exclamation marks in disgust at your original reply!!!!!!!!!!! rude!!!!!!!!!
i know the uk dosnt have parrots and other exotic birds. but it does have some beautiful species. the uk magpie like this 1 and also you'd be suprised how much colour a starling has and yes they can talk/sing too :)
i have an african grey but love all birds and local wild life.
Yeah, Magpies are part of the Corvid family of birds and are great mimickers. They are way smarter than most people give them credit for. Corvids can talk, figure out puzzles and use tools. IMO they are smarter than our supposed cousins the primates.
oh yer and what some one said up there people eating the poor boggers when they go on there jollys, its the same with the poor old fox were does it go now we have took all its land, they were here before us,we chucked the poor buggers out,god what the next water ship down will be like i love all gods stuff .
all the birds you say are dead now are mans doing and only mans doing its cause all that spraying in all them nice fields and you all blame a bird lol.ok. iv been looking for years and seen the change and the crops die out,the bird magpie dont touch crops much so the numbers build same as other birds will we have unequaled life as is stands.
This is how they really look like. :) It only depends on the lightning and the angle from where you're looking at them. It has almost have like some chameleon colour on some of it's feathers which makes them look blue, black, greenish etc. Very common bird here in Finland and I see them every day. :)
i take it back, just saw the 2nd part. yeah corvids can mimic .. but still, i shoot magpies on site, they are a vicious corvid, and when they work together in pairs in spring along a hedgerow, they can clean an area of songbirds!!
You are correct flanum and nobody ever takes a second to read about what these birds do when not looking cute for the camera. They will wipe out all the nestlings of a songbird in minutes. Some say that's just nature but it's not that simple due to humans putting these birds closer and closer than they used to be now the songbird populations suffer. Same problem humans have created with cowbirds and that's another bird to read a little about.
There is doubt about whether magpies have any effect on the songbird population. I'm no expert, but I believe the reasoning is that the number of young produced way exceeds the food available. So if 1,000 are born, and there is food for 100, 900 must die. It they are not preyed upon, then they starve. I accept it is distressing to see a magpie swallow a baby blue tit whole, but evidence suggests the crash in songbird numbers is due to higher numbers dying in the nest through lack of food.
I've been active in birding for 25 years and crows/magpies are famous for eating nestlings and plenty of video out there of this or they eat the eggs. The lack of food for songbirds comes from more aggressive species being forced closer and closer to songbirds nesting areas and eating the available food that's why the food isn't available.
Yeah, they'll clear an area of songbirds whilst marauding; in towns they flit about in big gangs. And they leave behind them empty songbird territories. Which fledglings from neighbouring territories can fill. The population of an animal is governed more by the food supply than predation. Songbird numbers are declining through lack of food. This may be due to our changing gardens. Instead of grass, flowerbeds, shrubs and hedges, we have fences, paving and tongue and fucking groove decking.
That magpie sounds like a little kid who's enjoying a new forbidden vocabulary, haha!
I wonder if there is a breeder that specializes in magpies? Out here in the U.S., it's illegal to own native crows, but there are breeders that sell foreign corvids like African pied crows and white-necked ravens.
Corvid Ranch's got a video of that here on YouTube.
i love all birds. i hate the fact a while ago people were hunting magpies due to their nature of killing small birds like sparrows. if you don't want sparrows to became extinct, don't bloody eat them like the greek do!!! that might be why the numbers are so low....god i hate thick people
@voiceofreason1000: That's your personal opinion. The same you can say it to all other animals and humans. Just like: I have horrible experience with a person, with a dog, with a cat and so on... If a person is bad to you, then it doesn't mean that all humans are bad.
Rooney is a lovely magpie and I'm sure he has learned some manners from his/her humans. So, please don't think in such a conservative way to say a kind of animals is bad or good. They are all great!
Those birds are very intelligent. Generally speaking i don't like magpies because they have the reputation to attack and kill little birds, and they are very noisy. I prefer ravens, i love ravens. But i have to admit this specimen is nice !
I made the mistake of buying sparkly custom jewellery from the mall. I know, it was an impulse buy. A gang of magpies attacked. The person from the market must have known they were hanging about the area. Maybe it increased his sales, I dont know. I now have a 3 INCH SCAR, lost my necklace and have been of work, long term sick for stress because of this.
"You fucker!" ... and you wonder why the bird knows rude words... :P

i love all birds. i hate the fact a while ago people were hunting magpies due to their nature of killing small birds like sparrows. if you don't want sparrows to became extinct, don't bloody eat them like the greek do!!! that might be why the numbers are so low....god i hate thick people
Cla900 2 years ago
i love birds as well :D *high fives*
i wouldn't mind the magpies and crows eating the house sparrow chicks where i live though...

Man, good thing you weren't wearing sandals while you were filming this.
Do they make bars of soap small enough to wash it's mouth out?

These birds arn't as cute as they look. I had a horrible experience witha magpie.
voiceofreason1000 2 years ago
@voiceofreason1000: That's your personal opinion. The same you can say it to all other animals and humans. Just like: I have horrible experience with a person, with a dog, with a cat and so on... If a person is bad to you, then it doesn't mean that all humans are bad.
Rooney is a lovely magpie and I'm sure he has learned some manners from his/her humans. So, please don't think in such a conservative way to say a kind of animals is bad or good. They are all great!

Rooney is such a lovely little character, & really cute.
