For over 1000 years, invading Muslims forged different Kingdoms of the small states into an empire which finally was given its death blow by the Brits. The Brits themselves say it was easy to take over India since there was no concept of nation state or national cohesion in the big geographical mass. Otherwise they wouldn't have ruled the region for 200 years.

Interestingly the Pakistanis are now exporting bagpipes to Scotland as some of the best ones available are manufactured in Faisalabad if i remember correctly.
