What's ironic is that Richard's apology maintains a sense of innocence: he claims he simply said what he did out of anger--to him the word _nigger_ is not a word of hate or racism but a word of anger! Yet the blacks claim the opposite and furthermore compound it with the hypocrisy of refusing to recognize _their_ remarks as racist. Richard's, in a way, refuses to admit that racism exists and therefore it ceases to be; the blacks, however, insist on interpreting racism and cause it to exist!

The black spokesmen once again had the chance to be the first to apologize and show that they are the better men--Christian men of forgiveness. Instead they played the race-victim card, ensuring that the boundary between white and black be maintained--the exact opposite of what they pretend to desire. This is not an issue of anger management. Richards made specific assertions which alluded to lynchings back in the 50s. There was no attempt on his part to combat the alleged heckling with some form of comic wit. No talking about the offending party's 'mama' or anything of that sort. What we witnessed during that act was an individual whose deep-seated prejudices spilled out on a whim.

I agree. In Holland there is nothing going on with that word either. We even had an extremely popular chocolate cake for decades we call Negerzoen or Niggerskiss. The word has Zero association with racism in Holland. It seems we never needed people like Martin Luther King in Europe to make the people understand why it`s bad to be a racist. Apartheid in South-Africa was also that clash we don`t expect in Europe between whites and blacks. What a shame there still remains so much hatred in the US.

I've heard Americans of most racial bckgrnds using racial slurs, mostly in the Anglo & African groups. Interestingly, slurs are always labeled worse when coming from Anglos. Blk comedians often portray whites as stereo typical nerdy types that make honking sounds while speaking, pants pulled above their navel, and lacking in the "cool" dept. Anglo comedians couldn't get away with a stereo typical portrayal of Blks a la minstrel. Unfairness incites resentment, widening the gap in race relations.

I can't agree with most of the posts here. Richards calling the guy a "nigger" was bad enough but saying "50 yrs ago you would have been hanging upside down with a fork in your ass" is an obvious reference to lynchings and is waaaaaay out of line. I understand people lose their temper and say/do really irresponsible stuff, but they then have to pay the price. Richards has paid the price; his career is effectively over.
