Yeah, for some weird reason, none of the other characters was ever really concerned with the fact that there are HUGE gouges in the ground around the whole city, making travel into and out of, impossible.

While the monsters are definately freaky, the fact that tons upon tons of rock just suddenly disappeared- INSTANTLY at that- is much more disconcerting.

The character could easily say "Oh, these monsters were made by a mad scientist." But NOTHING could explain the roads.

I'm just saying- a lot of stuff can be explained away, even by people who are in extreme denial, but interestingly enough, the endless holes, the missing roads (and indeed missing pieces of the whole city), the myriad of locked doors, are the things that can't be explained. The monsters MIGHT be explainable, but not the changes to the actual town. That's just my thought though.

I think that the gouges in the road were kind of symbolic, like the towns were "ripped" out of the world that we live in, and placed in a different world. The holes and locked doors could be lost memories... that's actually pretty good! I never thought about it like that before. Also, in a way, Silent Hill helps people remember things that they've forgotten i.e. James killing his wife or Alex accidentally killing his brother.

Lol I love these 'small' big towns. They have amazingly everything. I lived in a small town with a population under 2000, all we had was two gas stations, grocery store, a liquor store, a garden store, a cafe, a fire station, a lone church, and a small school. We had one policeman, no parks, a pathetic cemetery (that one looks like the one in New Orleans), and no court house. Seriously, Silent Hill had a bloody amusement park and a hospital, but was considered 'small'.
