esta pelicula es muy buena y la verdad me recuerda a todo lo que se sufre para poder estar en este perro pais, no me puedo quejar porque estando aqui puede encintrar el amor de mi vida.
We watched this film in my Spanish 4 class. My teacher says that the head hanging at the end is Arturo's head. Such a sad movie. I hope Enrique didn't give up and got what he'd dreamed about!
@Boudosaved I don't believe the director "chose" to end the film that way. That's the story ... in a sad sense, the father's death and sacrifice was in vain. In "the end" his son travels to El Norte and in spite of everything remains just another pair of arms to do the work of the rich, just as in Guatemala. It shows the futility of this too common story and cycle. But it doesn't have to stay that way.
Just watched this film and learned Zaide's panic attack in the rat/sewer scene was real as she had a phobia of rats. I loved this film and only wonder why the director chose the film to end the way it did. I'm not saying he should have ended it more upbeat. I just want to know what it is supposed to mean as I have heard in Latin cinema the hanging of a decapitated head suggests suicide. Is that what the brother does?
@Boudosaved He was rememebring what his father told him about the peasants always seen a a pair of strong arms..no matter where they go.. HE realizes that after the long journey.. He's just another pair of strong arms to work.
we watched this in my spanish class and the relationship between the siblings is just ridiculous. there was definitely some incest going on behind the scenes.
@kriss502 So why don't you just watch it then? Stagevu . com has it, for free. I just watched it. BTW, the film has some interesting background. @ 1 point, the film set was basically "invaded" by machine gun toting police & the crew was forced to bribe their way out of Mexico. Finished film had to be smuggled out of the country. Police kidnapped the films accountant & held him for ransom, etc. Pretty freak'n crazy stuff! Anyway, the movie is where I said it is. Check it out. Great film!
i watched this is in spanish class and i am in seventh period so everyones so crazy and is misbehaving but when my teacher showed this like almost everyone was just sitting and watching.
I watched El Norte and Sin Nombre. El Norte was much better imo (Even though this movie is much older), and more sad. One could have more sympathy for protagonists in this film. The ending of this movie is depressing. Sin Nombre was just another entertaining film, that didn't stick to me, imo. Both movies are good though.
You guys have to understand that this movie was made 26 years ago. I bet if they made this movie now that it would be ten times better than Sin Nombre!!
@unlbob1 : what makes you think El Norte isn't better than Sin Nombre???? I've heard they're both just as good. Most people I know think El Norte is better.
@207032 "America" pretty much describes all of the continental lands in the western hemisphere....derpface. So calling it america is rather not specific at all.
with all the Arizona BS thats going on I highly recommend this movie, just watched it with Mr. Khalili... saw it when it 1st came out with my Mom @the Olympic (downtown) in the 80's...
i only clicked on this because in my spanish class they made me watch it and i was kinda wondering if it was actually real

@lingo1208 Thanks. I do recall the father telling him that. I think the ending is more realistic and less "Hollywoodized".
