I'm pretty sure the Combine came through the same rift caused be the Resonance Cascade and took over earth while the U.S. was occupied with Black Mesa.
I thought that Nihilant was an administrator, as Breen in Half Life 2, so the combine controlled him. And that xen was a place to teleport to other places, so the combine used this as a means of communication to the planet earth. I think that the Alien Slave, Alien Grunt, Garg, Alien Controller, and Nihilant were not from xen.
In portal 2 Cave Johnson did not have dispositive to travel in time or something?.

I feel something important was left out. At the end of Half-Life 2 and at the beginning of Episode 1, the scene where the dark matter reactor was imploding, G-Man saved Gordan. He managed to hold on to him and stated it wasn't is time yet. However, we see countless vorts break the hold of G-Man (in which he was sincerely pissed off about) and free Gordan from his hold and explosion placing him at the base of the tower. G-Man doesn't want Gordan dead. He would already be so if he chose.

Scientist knew Xen existed as they were taking specimens I think Nihilath was in control but not in a bad way. He had a small army and was in defence of the combine. This leaves out the very important ending to the Half-life 2 - Gman pulled Gordon out of the fight right at a specific moment. It was the purple vortigaunts who pulled Gordon back in, and out of Gman's control. Because of this, it's really hard to imagine Gman wanted the Combine destroyed, because he pulled Gordon out way earlier than that. The Vortigaunts want the Combine destroyed. Gman only wanted you to blow up the Combine portal. This makes his actions much more ambiguous.

IT looks as if G-Man is removing all powerful figures from office. Maybe to gain ultimate power? Or maybe it is his job to remove tyrannical leaders of great power. But as G-Man, he can't do it himself. He can't affect the physical world and that's why he needs Gordon Freeman to do the job. After seeing what Gordon could accomplish in Half-Life 1 in Black Mesa he knew "Gordon was the right man for the job." Odessa says this as well. Although that is only because of Gordon's reputation.
I don't think Gman would of killed Gordon at the end of Episode Two, because he would need him alive, to fight the Combine, otherwise I don't see Gman turning on them without Gordon. Considering Gordon gets knocked out at Ep2, Gman may share his reasons about Eli's knowing right then, until assuming Alyx wakes him. How else would they start the game otherwise? The other thing is, I don't think Gordon can actually do anything to Gman, and not until the Combine are out of the way.

@hujo545 Well, Gman probably sold Xen to the Combine. Knowing the Combine's habit of.. combining Alien races to form an unstoppable force.
Gman clearly profited greatly by this and is probably using this payment to somehow manufacture Gordon as the ultimate weapon. When Gordon destroys the Combine, Gman's unidentified group will probably take its place. And with their power, they can destroy Gordon due to their owning of him. That's why Nihilanth is needed.

@Tharandomgamerz Well, I assume he is in a group because he mentions that he is handicapped by restrictions. Gman is most likely working with the government even though he is an alien; a lot like a Roswell negotiator (conspiracy-type stuff). Also, remember that Shepard is not canon to the Half-Life universe. I think G-man is trying to make something powerful out of all this, whether it be his group, employers, or another alien race. It's all so cool -- I love Half-Life too :)

Remember, Xen was basically a socialistic rendezvous for all alien fugitives to escape the overwhelming rule of the Combine. With the Combine on Xen's position, they planned an assault on Earth with the help of Gman's tip of a free and direct portal to a new world to shelter.

I feel something important was left out. At the end of Half-Life 2 and at the beginning of Episode 1, the scene where the dark matter reactor was imploding, G-Man saved Gordan. He managed to hold on to him and stated it wasn't is time yet. However, we see countless vorts break the hold of G-Man (in which he was sincerely pissed off about) and free Gordan from his hold and explosion placing him at the base of the tower. G-Man doesn't want Gordan dead. He would already be so if he chose.

Scientist knew Xen existed as they were taking specimens I think Nihilath was in control but not in a bad way. He had a small army and was in defence of the combine. Meaning G-man had his as one of his employers. He got gordon to kill nihilath wich destroyed the army and scattered what was left and were completetly inslaved by the combine.

This leaves out the very important ending to the Half-life 2 - Gman pulled Gordon out of the fight right at a specific moment. It was the purple vortigaunts who pulled Gordon back in, and out of Gman's control. Because of this, it's really hard to imagine Gman wanted the Combine destroyed, because he pulled Gordon out way earlier than that. The Vortigaunts want the Combine destroyed. Gman only wanted you to blow up the Combine portal. This makes his actions much more ambiguous.

Nihilanth says "Thieves, you are all thieves", meaning the survey teams unrightfully took what they took from Xen. However, Gman delivered the ustable crystal that caused the resonance cascade.

IT looks as if G-Man is removing all powerful figures from office. Maybe to gain ultimate power? Or maybe it is his job to remove tyrannical leaders of great power. I don't think Gman would of killed Gordon at the end of Episode Two, because he would need him alive, to fight the Combine, otherwise I don't see Gman turning on them without Gordon. Considering Gordon gets knocked out at Ep2, Gman may share his reasons about Eli's knowing right then, until assuming Alyx wakes him. How else would they start the game otherwise? The other thing is, I don't think Gordon can actually do anything to Gman, and not until the Combine are out of the way.

Gman clearly profited greatly by this and is probably using this payment to somehow manufacture Gordon as the ultimate weapon. Gman is most likely working with the government even though he is an alien; a lot like a Roswell negotiator (conspiracy-type stuff). Also, remember that Shepard is not canon to the Half-Life universe. I think G-man is trying to make something powerful out of all this, whether it be his group, employers, or another alien race. It's all so cool -- I love Half-Life too :)

Remember, Xen was basically a socialistic rendezvous for all alien fugitives to escape the overwhelming rule of the Combine. With the Combine on Xen's position, they planned an assault on Earth with the help of Gman's tip of a free and direct portal to a new world to shelter.

So I really think its a character yet revealed and or a plot twist with someone like Alex... she seems to know who he is and it seems G-Turd has some interest in her too.
