That's because most Americans are stuck up the cul-de-sac in an SUV and towns are designed around the use of the motor car. Take a map of your local area, and plot where your house is, then plot your nearest school, shops, train and bus stations then figure out how far it is to walk, cycle and drive. I'm lucky in that where I live, just about everything is within 3 miles of my home so I only use the car once a week where I have to travel about 20 miles late at night.
