His book "the Use of Haiti" is a very interesting and infuriating work about the history of colonialism and neocolonialism that have plagued this country. Anyone who wants to understand Haiti should read it.

does anyone know why haiti is so brutally impoverished and bereft of infrastructure when the dominican republic (who essentially shares half the island with them) never seems to be in such bad shape? it would seem likely that the two nations would share much of the same natural resources and hence similar ability to generate a decent GNP.
