you can't even imagine a voice higher than Minnie's. It would take a machine, not a human voice, she is unbelievable, yes, that's the word, UNBELIEVABLE
Other excellent singers have sung this song after Minnie, but none have the high voice to sing it like her. She is truly the only one from anywhere, anytime, that has sung like this, it's just so good that there is no word to describe it. This can just be called, for lack of a better work, MINNIE
THIS IS THE FIRST SONG TRIED TO SING AT AGE 3! In front of my older sister Judy Kimball(RIP), WHEN SHE WAS BABYSITTING ME FOR MY MOTHER LULA! I miss my sister sometimes! May she rest in peace! I didn't know anything about sex when I first heard this song, I really loved the hook then!

@anohso , Minnie had far more talent and grace than that cheap 'ho' Mariah ever will have. And your right, Minnie properly showcased her talent. Mariah sings uninspiring cheap arrangements and songs
@SpazChat I agree 100%. Mariah is just a fame monster. She doesn't have soul or talent to be compared to Minnie Riperton who was for the art of music but was not supported by her label.
I can't imagine why she wouldn't have been supported by her record label. I just don't get it. I do remember her label releasing quite a few albums featuring her.
@anohso , Isn't that what it's supposed to be about, the art of music? That's why pop music is in the disgusting mess that it is in now. Minnie should have been one of the biggest music stars ever. She made plenty of money on the stage though, which is where the financial longevity is, for any of them.
@SpazChat I guess in those days Labels wanted you to be one thing or the other. Minnie being black was expected to sing black music but her art was too wide to express it in one genre and so she would often blend her sound to mix classical with Soul. She was planning to leave her label because she was not happy with their support but she was not able to do so because of her cancer. But I'm happy she left behind great music to last us forever.
@SpazChat When one possessed a voice such as Minnie had, theatrics fade into the background. It superceded anything that a soundstage, choreographer or stylist could ever hope to have achieved. The sound of her voice IS that presence you speak of.
Her daughter, Maya Rudolph, just had her 3rd child today...it would have been great if Minnie could have been alive to see her grandchildren, but I bet she is a perfect guardian angel over them!
Gotta love how the crowd here is so quiet until she does the "Everytime that we oooohh" part. She was probably the sexiest singer of that era. And I'm female and straight...lol
I love when singer sing their songs live!!!! Every singer should be made to know that this is the true estimation of your talent... That woman was Blessed witha great instrument.

Shanice reminds me of Minnie not Mariah, ever. What separate them is their proper use of their ability.

Not very good with stage presence, but she had a glorious voice. One of only two pop music coloraturas I know of . The other being Mariah Carey.
