I'm glad I ran across this vid. My dad, Buck Smith, a Sunland, CA Shamrock, was out there racing in those days. He was also Nat'l Cross country champ in the mid to late 50's. I was hoping to find some film of him. I know he's in the Victor's HareNHound video and maybe on one of the On Any Sunday vids. Thanks for the memories!!
I met him about 2 years ago and did not even realizie it was him at the time a group of buddies were hanging around talking about the new honda 450. They just introuduced me to him as J. super cool and humble guy!!!!!!!!!!!
JN Roberts. Another legend! I am so glad I was able to see this clip. What memories. Look at the speed this guy carries!!! Anybody ever tell him where the brakes are and how to use em??? It would appear not! He is so relaxed as that bike is bouncing under him like that. But that's what the bike did! You didn't have any choice but to let it bounce like that. just point it! Greaat!!
@littlefred811 Perfectly put. These kids today wouldn't last 10 minutes in the desert with all their conditioning, training and what ever else, if you put them on a 1970 Huskey with little to no suspension travel. J.N. was a MAN as was Whitey and the rest. They ate what they wanted, smoked and still kicked everyone's ass.
@littlefred811 4 inches of suspension was modified at certain points in time. Around that time Koni was the hot shock (expensive too). then they came out with Curnet's shock. They were able to pull out a bit over 4 inches of travel. Now they have about 3 inches of sag!! I had a 450 husky. What a powerband!
Could you image ridding all out like that for hours on end? Supercross they ride for twenty minutes and then they go into their motor homes and take a shower and rest and watch bugs bunny while eating fruit loops and then come back out and ride for another twenty minutes
JN Roberts was simply the best. When this video was shot, probably around 1970, the bikes were fast but they handled nothing like todays motorcycles. These guys knew how to finesse heavy, powerful, bikes with poor suspension systems and poor handling characteristics compared to the bikes of today.
well he had a lucky number

Yea Guy I see whitey Martino on on any sunday evwerytime i watch it, and the guy was sooo good, as was malcolm, and JN too,
too many thing's have changed over the yrs,
and too nuch tech stuff too soon,
I have an 85 honda CR 250 and its not nearly as much fun to ride as the older two shocker's,
geometry is different and you sit too far forward and not back like the older ones,
I hope this 86 KX 500 will be ok for me too,
Nice Bike but again you sit far forward,

I raced Barstow Vegas twice. J.N. was great. He also was a stunt man in movies.

what bike is he using???? looks like a yamaha 500 or something like that

That bike handles like a lumber wagon compared to today's suspension. Hats off, I can't imagine the beating he was taking.

Holy crap, I'm surprised he managed to stay on the bike... I'd have thought his massive BALLS would have got in the way ;-)

One of my childhood heroes. Think he has the 19 inch front wheel on the 400 there. Remember him well with the football face guard.
