If you are 4 wheeling and a wheel loses traction while climbing an obstacle like a rock where you are exerting alot of power, the sudden lock has to destroy the rear end. I'm sure it works fine under low power, but under high power it will fail.
had one of these in a k5 stock. did pretty badass in the mud untill it broke going down the road. still drove but made terrible noises it broke and basically made a locker hahaha.
Had the exact same thing happen to my 73 K5 about a month ago, installed a powertrax, completely different world. worth it on an offroad truck. I should warn you, you have to have an open differential carrier to use a powertrax.
oops, make that ten, this one was a winner, case busted, i had to cut on f the spiders apart to the the cross shaft out, $1400 job because these things are so awesome!!!!!
so where is the animation of these things gutting themselfs and wiping out the ring and pinion, shooting the crosspin through the cover and busting the bearing caps off of the housing???????
toasted mine last weekend at the track. knew it was going to happen, but still a shitty night. nothing was left...spider gears all mangled and ripped up, locking pin sheared off, cross shaft had deep scoring, gears were chewed up. it happened while i was brake stalled, so i wasn't even moving! don't ever think you're safe with a g80...
I just bout a 00 z71 factory and it has posi track rear end, it never slips n and out it spins both wheels no matter wat ne one else have one of these trucks??
@thomas9781 You probably have a standard limited slip differential. They are tougher to break but they don't lock up 100%. The easiest test is to drive up and incline until one of your rear wheels lifts off the ground. high range 2wd is best for this test. If you have an LSD the tire in the air will spin and the truck will stop climbing. If you have an Eaton, the wheel will spin, then lock, then you can drive the truck right onto its side of you want. ;)
@GerryK61 Well, its a safety thing, or GM trucks will be doing the Exlporer thing on the highways. And IMO, if you are doing over 20 mph, you clearly are not stuck yet.
And if you doing less than 20 mph, but using that kind of wheel speed, you deserve to have it not work. :p
@GerryK61 lol, actually, I used too and I enjoyed watching idiots use wheel speed to dig themselves a grave. My friends dad had a great story of a guy he knew with a big block N20 1/2 ton on 44's who hit the button and buried himself to his rockers. My friend's dad drove right up next to him in his v6 CJ on 33's, waved, and drove on by. Man, the guy was pissed.
except they like to BREAK when you do any hard launching or bolt on anything that creates more launching power and have tires that stick. G80 goes BOOM
Better than a clutch type dif but still not as good as a selectable locker or an automatic detroit locker. Then again it is head and shoulders above any traction control dif!
it's funny the gov lock on my 10 bolt is the only thing i haven't broken yet after 2 rebuilds

@85BMW745i It will not engage if the wheel speed is too high. Also, how fast are you climbing rocks? I've never seen any high speed rock climbing.

Seems like it would work if you didn't have to spin one wheel into a hole to lock the other.

Someone needs to dub Saliva "CLICK CLICK BOOM" over this animation.

@thomas9781 look in your glove box for the RPO code G80 to see if you got the G80, cuz i got an 01 Z71 and its got the g80

Kind of defeats the purpose if its only works below 20mph. What good is that when your in deep mud or snow and need full power to get through!
GerryK61 2 years ago
it will only engage below 20 mph, but it will stay locked above 20.....

@l337pwnage
I take it you don't spend to much time off roading through deep Mud & snow.
If you did then you would undertand my earlier comment.
The G80 diff is only good for A&W offroading in a parking lot.

@l337pwnage Sometimes a little wheel speed is needed, but most people use way too much and don't know how to control their throttle
And, even with a G80, you can lock it at low speed, then get on it and it stays locked for long enough to get out.

i cant believe the same people who made the 12 posi also made this piece of shit . mine stopped working at 30 thou miles

Agreed! We just blew one out of a 2005 Silverado from a work truck.
Replaced it with an Eaton Posi and Richmond 3.42's

An Arc welder is cheaper than a G80, and does pretty much the same thing, its just instantly locked :P

its actually just temporaary lock not full time lock. so it disengages riight away...i think

Hence many people referring to the G80 as the Garbage 80 or the Grenade 80.
