id say the intellivision version is the worst, the vectrex is the best, the c64 version is notable great conversion.
i would not have included the gameboy advanced, since its a such a modern piece of hardware compared with the game i could basicly emulate it rather than convert it.
id have included another version from the same time relative to its release as all the rest, msx, amstrad cpc, texas ti-99 etc
@cant1rac I really wanted to add a few more but was unable to for several reasons. The main being that I couldn't get them to work on the ports You mentioned. It was about 3 weeks after making this video that I finally got the TI99 port to work. But by then it was too late. :(
We have to keep in mind that in the early 80s most programmers couldn't extract the best of the 8 bit machines. Even the atari 2600 could have done better in most of these games, take Fatal Run and compare it to Pole Position. It could have even the road signs. The ZX spectrum also got some great racing games later, and this version of Pole Position doesn't do it justice.
@eklipsegirl When I made these I was using another program. It only outputted them in this resolution. I switched to the Windows movie maker on windows 7 & improved the videos. If You don't like what You see then move on. I do these video's as a hobby. I am not obligated in any way, shape, or form to do any. But 99% of My comments are positive so I will not let Your comment based in ignorance ruin my day. Thumbs down all of My videos. I don't care ! You can't please everybody
But everybody cannot please me. And if You are really that anal about a border around Your view. Then Maybe You should break the Frame off Your monitor & tape it to the wall.
Vectrex takes the pole position here for it's novelty and excellence. Really embarrased by the BBC micro version - the cars have been drawn too flat - they look like pancakes and are too wide. Atari 800 version is very playable - more than the C64 version I know - I had both and put them head-to-head when I was a kid, and it is faster. Intellivision version is worse than the Atari 2600 version, someone didn't do a proper job there. Spectrum version is not bad either.
vectrex version looks great..the trails left behind everything as it zooms past and the speed make it look really impressive and fun to play..the sound is great too..
OK ! Coolness points to whoever can tell me what the hell the woman said at 1:14. I have no clue. The only words I could make out was & I think.. Driving & road.
Wow, had no idea there was an Intellivision version....I can't imagine playing it back in the day with those horrid disc controllers and tiny fire buttons....ouch. And this was one of the few games that benefited from those wonky 5200 analog controllers. Also, was always surprised that there wasn't an NES version of this.
Oh yeah, I loved Mat Mania!! An NES version would have been great, was a big fan of Pro Wrestling for that reason, it was as close as we could get at the time. I miss the original wrestling games with wacky made up characters....so much more fun than the yearly WWE stuff.
@sglider I guess there were some licensing issues with Atari, so Nintendo made it's own version called F1 Racer. Despite some minor enhanchements, is not less accurate than the actual licensed versions with the "Pole Position" name on them. Same story with Sega's Outrun and Nintendo's Rad Racer.
Looking at the different versions the Vectrex and Commodore64 where my favourites; they at least had a sense of speed that the others lacked. The GBA version looked pretty good as well.
I like the 2600 version, dodgy graphics but fun to play. It is often said that the ZX Spectum, while having lots of great originals, was quite poor when it came to arcade ports. For some reason I now really want to play that DOS version, shame that MS-DOS emulation is such a pain in the ass. The Vectrex is to video games, what the DeLorean is to cars.
@MattTheSaiyan If Youdo play the DOS version You'll have issues in dos box unless You have a floppy drive A: If You don't use the smallest thumb drive You can get & change the drive letter to A: Next open the screen & Drag the icon to the DOS box window & it will open right up. :)
The Pole Position version for the current Retro Arcade Featuring Pac-Man Plug It In and Play system is pretty good. Might be really close to the arcade too; I'm not sure since I didn't originally play it that much in the arcade (I do now though; love it!). Past versions weren't as good, as I saw a video on here where the sounds were all wrong (forget which one since there are a ton of these 'plug and play' systems out).
There is an Amiga game called Gridstart which is a lot like Pole Position....being an ANCO game from the 80s though it isn't very good ;o)
Never ever seen an ST version unless ANCO did Gridstart for that too. And only seen Pole Position II on the C64 (Gridstart and Pole Position II are on my uploads)
Why no Atari ST and Amiga versions? Not sure about an Amiga version, but there was an ST version. Would be nice.
Obviously from them the GBA wins, but since it is a generation or more newer machine, not big surprise. From the previous systems, my vote goes to Vectrex and Intellivision.
@Amaranthus616 I don't remember saying that it is better because it is newer. It looks better. If controls or otherwise is terrible, there is no way of me knowing since I don't have the game on the GBA.
@Amaranthus616 yes, from how they look. SInce I am not the one playing the games how else can I compare them but how they look and perhaps sound? Dude, use your brain.
@Trusteft you didnt mention that to start off with, you just said on a new machine its better. and as you didnt say you didnt play it, how was i to know you meant just by the looks? by what you said, it looked like you had played it
@Amaranthus616 Read what I originally said, again. "OBVIOUSLY from THEM, the GBA wins" Do you know what obviously mean? Now, if you do, consider when and where I Said it. I said it regarding a video clip on youtube. Which, as most videos, can only be watched. He didn't review each version, he just recorded a small segment. There is nothing to go by, but how they look, and sound. Dude, just forget it.
@Trusteft by for them i thought you meant by the versions of the game as in out of....meaning you thinking you liked the gba one best. if its my mistake its my mistake, but the post wasnt too clear for me

Why did you spoil the gameplay with letterboxed screen? They ALL are 3:4.
Thumbs down.
