Unbelievable, especially that surreal last part about the mysterious new "Market". I wonder how long market forces will take to sweep aside the incompetent leadership crippling the country.
@MrVinnyable1 Watch other Documentaries and they will show you. You need the governments permission, they follow you around, then don't let you talk to anyone, unless they want you to, they arrange everything for you... ect ect.
@AmANoid Probably know. I know you can go in to North Korea with the correct passport for example a New Zealand passport will probably get you in but an American one probably wouldnt.
Their country is so great that they can not self-sustain themselves without outside aid, so much for the glory of their government. What a joke of a country.
Somehow I think serving an 8 course meal would do a better job of changing North Korean minds than bombing it to bits. They're trained to expect hostility and to fight back in war but what propaganda is there to work against a stranger's love and kindness?
This shows how communism has been turned into a bastardisation of the ideal. Deng Xiaoping in China was right when he said 'No matter if it is a white cat or a black cat; as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat' about becoming a market economy. Until a new, more practical form of communism comes forth then there is no point leaving your people in preventable hardship. I wish the Kim Jong-Un would see that.
@Darkflay123 The sad part is, if these people were freed they wouldn't know how to handle it. Look at the missteps in the former Soviet bloc countries. It has not been easy for them. But North Korea is so isolated, so backwards and cut off from normal life. They would be overwhelmed. This country has just been ruined.
This is also only the people of Pyongyang, the best fed and provided for people - 3 million people from the country's total population of 24 million. The horrific poverty of the rest of the country isn't allowed to be seen by foreigners (far worse than that of Pyongyang) nor the concentration camps that imprison hundreds of thousands of people for slave labor.
Keep in mind - this is only what North Korea willingly lets known. Families eating lesser rations is NOT the tragedy in North Korea. The real tragedies in North Korea are the thousands starving to death every year, concentration camps paralleling those during the Holocaust, sex trafficking, and a government that controls the country by fear. There is a serious human rights crisis going on and all the world sees are some hungry people & nuclear weapons. youtube "[LiNK] Montage of News Footage"
Am I strange in thinking one chicken per person per month is quite a lot? And six eggs? Save it for the weekends and turn to your rice and vegetables :D I'm quite serious. They have to live like that for they are largely self sufficent. We have chicken more often because we import chicken feed.
Unless the beeb are being one sided, I can't see anything inherently wrong with North Korea. I did want to shake them at a few points, but they may have had a point about the Iraq invasion.

We have freedom of movement just for a start, how many people are send to hard labour death camps because they were deemed unloyal to the party? we can tune out from propaganda, to them it's relentless
This is definitely a very 'soft' piece of journalism about North Korea by the BBC. For a more accurate and comprehensive look at life there, I would recommend National Geographic's 'Undercover Inside North Korea' - available on YouTube.
Of there great leader passing away. The N. Korean government literally was in caos. I knew a lady who escaped in 1996 and spoke little English and had a very low level skillset, but yet the stories she told was nearly unbelievable. The things this lady told us was simply shocking. This is also how I can form a view.
Hmmm I see a huge problem with this: Self reliance. If you are self reliant, wouldn't that also mean self accountable? Clearly not in a socialistic ideology. Its also clear N. Koreans are very brainwashed and oppressed. Even the title of there country is misleading. But for anyone who thinks they are better then them don't understand they are spoonfed at birth this propaganda. Unlike here in America they have to eat it or die. Also part of the fathoms that took place was because.....
1) There are food problems today in North Korea, but not widespread famine like in the 1990s.
2) The famine was caused by a combination of USSR collapse and economic mismanagement, not leaders purposely starving people.
3) North Korea is poor/has a shortage in food due to various reasons: relatively inferile soil for agriculture and severe economic sanctions and trade embargoes.
I hope Kim Jong Un does better, but I really hope people can view things about North Korea in a more fair perspective.
Yep, thats how life is in a communist state. You get Rations for the month, and pray you dont make a mistake on resiting the "great leaders" qualities
@kungfufreddy (laughs) Yeah, maybe one way for them to earn some hard currency is to promote in Western countries the "North Korean diet plan--lose 30 lbs. in three months or you get your money back!"
Pyongyang is the city of the nomenklatura. The people there are lucky, the are the elite. Workers and farmers who don't live in that city have a hard time. 1/3 of all people suffer from hunger in North Korea. That evil regime has to go, but even with Kim Jong Il's death that seems unlikely. Kim Jong Un and the generals rule and I don't think that 28 year old wants to stop playing emperor of North Korea.
@jshowa5 These things are valid problems, but people are campaigning against them, and, more importantly, they are ALLOWED to. It is possible to change our ways, the very fact that you are here, on the internet, rightfully voicing your criticisms is testament to something. There are a lot of us who go against the bullshit, and hey, if we keep up being vocal and making sense, society will follow.
The issues you mention exist, but they do not nearly compare to what is going on in NK.
Just a small bit of info, Animal Farm was based on the Soviet Union in Russia. Who took over North Korea and helped them fight against the south? Soviet Union...
Doesn't seem that bad if you are on the top tier of society. But if you are on the bottom you are nothing. These people are not blind to what is going on, they are just trying to live their lives and follow the rules of an oppressive regime.
@jshowa5 If you have a problem with the entertainment industry then don't be a part of it, don't buy a TV or a radio, or be using Youtube or subscribe to magazines and go to concert's. You say you don't want this society but what work are you doing to change it? Your not out there putting across your views to the public, or creating or joining a group expressing your views, your sitting on your arse complaining, if you want a change make it happen.
@jshowa5 "system that allows companies to invest in credit default swaps ... because a person, who just wants to buy a home, is suckered into accepting a ruse by the banks "
The above demonstrates the mess that's in your mind. I am not religious, but I will follow the "Don't throw pearls before swine" advice from the Bible, in this case. Go back to school. Learn some history and economics. Learn how the world works. Then people might take you more seriously.
@jshowa5 "China is pretty much the only example of a somewhat sustained Communist country."
China used to be a backward country with a low standard of living. When it started to embrace capitalism (despite the fact that its leaders are still dictators), its standard of living began to increase at an incredible pace. There is now no equality there, but the conditions of the poor and the average is better than ever.
@jshowa5 Karl Marx ignored incentives. Would you fly a plane designed by someone who ignored the force of gravity? I mean, if not for that, it sounds like a nice innovative plane design.
@jshowa5 Communism ignores the fact that people need incentives in order to work (and increase the size of the "pie"). Without incentives, the victims (citizens of a Commie country) have to be Forced to work. They become serfs. To force the people to work, you need a totalitarian regime. In a totalitarian regime, the leaders are inevitably going to be tempted to take advantage of their power.
@jshowa5 "you're saying that capitalism is the fastest way to improve the standard of living for the poor when I've just told you that 20% of the population holds 80% of the American wealth?"
Capitalism is the fastest way to grow the size of the pie. Historically, 20% of a huge pie proved to be significantly larger than 99% of a tiny shrinking pie. Use your intelligence.
@ps3xpert I think your teacher may have meant South Korea. I really doubt she meant North Korea, seeing as we hardly know what's going on in that country, much less statistics about the students' level of education.
@jshowa5 What matters is not the inequality, what matters is the standard of living of the poor. Capitalism results in the fastest sustainable improvement of the standard of living of the poor. All communism does, is it creates equality by making EVERYONE poor (if you ignore the standard of living of the Communist ruling elite). It is impossible to make everyone rich, but pretty easy to make everyone poor. You may watch Milton Friedman clips if you want to educate yourself further.
@jshowa5 Like you said, all communism states ended up like North Korea (or worse - see Cambodia). All of those states claimed to be trying to forge "a new man". That's because it was clear to the leaders that communism wouldn't work when your population are normal people. You need an army of dehumanized slaves, in order for it to work.
Actually, this is the "good" North Korea. This didn't show the starving kids, the concentration fields, how they handle people who dares : "isn't there a better way to treat us ?" I am happy that this tyrant is dead, but this will still go on.
This is no socialism, comunism or whatever, this is the best and most brainwashing dictatorship I've ever seen. And with their nuclear power, there's nothing outsiders can do. The revolution had to come from the inside, but now is just too late
Some people are saying this doesn't look that bad. This is the show house, this is what North Korea want's to show off. This isn't the typical life, this is the dream they aspire to. To all the others starving in the fields, they're living like kings.
They said the national TV broadcasts 5 hours a day. Is it possible for an outside broadcast to be sent for the other hours. And I would love to see a North Koreans reaction once they get out, internet, high speed trains, 3D movies.
@avgazian Are you joking or do you really not get it. There is no KFC there aren't (at the point of making this) private stores. Just government food dispensaries.
That is the problem with the ideology. This isn't socialism or communism. Happened as christianity, Jesus teach us peace, love but their followers made a doctrine of hate. The same way occured with socialism, this ideology search the prosperity and equality and their followers made a doctrine of hate based in 'hope'.
after writing two essays on the people of North Korea, I think the majority of Pyongyang really believes that we are actively trying to destroy the DPRK. In actuality here in the U.S. most people don't even realize we're technically still at war. I feel sad for the people that accept these lies and even greater sadness for those outside of the city who probably couldn't find a country outside of the ROK, Russia, or China on a map, if even those few.
I have't seen anything bad in their life. They are doing ok.The only thing they did different was they replace jesus with kim il sung.Sung birthday is their x-mas.Each individual has a ration of one chicken a month which is good enough. We don't need toeat too much meat any ways.
Don't like to suggest, but they US should blockade foreign aid to NK, it would mean starving several, but if it could shake the facist regime and cripple it, then things would progress to a democracy for the people and not the phony "Peoples Democratic republic" which they like to suggest
whats stupid is that anyone can make a country look like shit. I can make america look like a third world. let me go downtown to the homeless people and will see how great america is. dont fall for propaganda. BELIEVE ONLY WHAT YOU SEE IN PERSON NOT WHAT OTHER SEE FOR YOU!!!!!
actually after reading about the juche ideas, it would be a nice idea if it wasnt paired with human rights violations and ppl being forced to stay in their country and ppl dying because of "self reliance" (we all know theyre not "really" dying cause of that reason, but u know)
Wonder how the negotiation with South korea to unite the countries would go like if they ever do work out one again. I can't see how South Korea, a country that has prosper significantly in terms of wealth and human rights, ever see a way to unite with North korea again. It's like saying, "Hey North Korea, we'll share you our wealth that we spent decades building while accepting your oppressive policies".
@fuecheeyaj Hey North Korea, we'll share you our wealth that we spent decades building while accepting your oppressive policies"........i dont think that would happen. im sure theyd get rid of that or modify
You know, everything in this vid is stages by the state? Nothing they say or do are they own, the goverment tell them exactly what to do. Its like a movie.
Does North Korea understand there are other countries aside from the "imperialist US" that it could trade with as a means to feed it's own people? Quite a few other countries in fact. These documentaries leave me scratching my head
@andataris1 there are other countries but the US would prob threaten the country that wants to trade with war, the US would prob say that they were helping the spread of communism/socialism, because communism(everyone is equal), socialism(government owns everything) and capitalism(free market) are all completely diff ideas they conflict.
The sick thing is that some people are prefering this live instead of the normal western life and say that North Korea is a brave country standing up against the imperial powers like the US. to those people i say FUCK U! North Korean goverment doesnt give a shit about you or there own people all they do care about is Kim Jong Il.... Thats it.... 1 men 1 voice....
@030terror You honestly believe the North Koreans prefer the life they live? Perhaps, but only because they know no other way of existing and would receive a bullet in the head if they openly question their situation. I think they deserve some sympathy, not a big 'ol FUCK U lol
Usually on tv they have to pretend they are soo happy there in reality tons of families die trying to get past borders :C So for them die staying or die trying.
Unbelievable, especially that surreal last part about the mysterious new "Market". I wonder how long market forces will take to sweep aside the incompetent leadership crippling the country.

@hamneggwich The ideals of communism are admirable.
However it's implementation has been awful, and it lacks an understanding of human nature.
The result is the horrors we have seen over and over again throughout history.

@jshowa5 Compare the standard of living of the poor in North Korea and South Korea, and in East and West Germany. Think hard, retard. Anything?
Billbauer222 1 month ago
@jshowa5 Having said the above, I don't get this - are you trying to use China as an example of Communism being a workable system?! LOL!!!
Billbauer222 1 month ago
@jshowa5 "China is pretty much the only example of a somewhat sustained Communist country."
China used to be a backward country with a low standard of living. When it started to embrace capitalism (despite the fact that its leaders are still dictators), its standard of living began to increase at an incredible pace. There is now no equality there, but the conditions of the poor and the average is better than ever.
Billbauer222 1 month ago
@jshowa5 Karl Marx ignored incentives. Would you fly a plane designed by someone who ignored the force of gravity? I mean, if not for that, it sounds like a nice innovative plane design.
Billbauer222 1 month ago

Use your intelligence.

ps3xpert 1 month ago
@jshowa5 What matters is not the inequality, what matters is the standard of living of the poor. Capitalism results in the fastest sustainable improvement of the standard of living of the poor. All communism does, is it creates equality by making EVERYONE poor (if you ignore the standard of living of the Communist ruling elite). It is impossible to make everyone rich, but pretty easy to make everyone poor. You may watch Milton Friedman clips if you want to educate yourself further.
Billbauer222 1 month ago
@jshowa5 Like you said, all communism states ended up like North Korea (or worse - see Cambodia). All of those states claimed to be trying to forge "a new man". That's because it was clear to the leaders that communism wouldn't work when your population are normal people. You need an army of dehumanized slaves, in order for it to work.

This is no socialism, comunism or whatever, this is the best and most brainwashing dictatorship I've ever seen. And with their nuclear power, there's nothing outsiders can do. The revolution had to come from the inside, but now is just too late

In actuality here in the U.S. most people don't even realize we're technically still at war. I feel sad for the people that accept these lies and even greater sadness for those outside of the city who probably couldn't find a country outside of the ROK, Russia, or China on a map, if even those few.

I can't see how South Korea, a country that has prosper significantly in terms of wealth and human rights, ever see a way to unite with North korea again. andataris1 2 months ago
@andataris1 there are other countries but the US would prob threaten the country that wants to trade with war, the US would prob say that they were helping the spread of communism/socialism, because communism(everyone is equal), socialism(government owns everything) and capitalism(free market) are all completely diff ideas they conflict.
