Americans decided in their wisdom that consumer escapism was the answer; that while they sated their every whim the profit motive would take care of all else. There was no need to think about how to keep an Independent Well-Funded Press to monitor govt in an age where serious journalism can no longer be sustained by the old model. Now all they have is a bunch of hacks, flacks, and internet wing nuts disseminating all manner of silliness in the name of "news". Govt is now virtually unaccountable.
