When our Mothers tilt their heads and sing 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries get built and weather we admit it or not White, Black and all in between smile inside and grow.
Sorry, but I am Greek Orthodox, and when I am in church, I prefer to hear a formal liturgy (mass), as this truly brings me into union with God. Otherwise, I can go to a concert.
This song really does something to me. I listen to this and how things use to be in my childhood, me and family in church, worshiping and praising God. I listen to the words and I it explains that we have to stay together no matter what is going on. I listen to this song all the time. This video clip is a classic.
@ JayLa76....Thanks for the upload. I've actually been watching your upload every now and then since I first found it up here on Youtube this past summer....but I just decided to leave a comment this evening saying thank you for putting it up here. This is the only place that I could find Ms. Staples singing this...I really needed to hear this song tonight. Many Blessing To You
Mavis makes me feel this song. The mark of an excellent artist and true conviction. The singer can make you feel what they're talking about because, they beleive it themselves.
I had to download the episode in iTunes $1.99 so I could have the song. I went all through Mavis Staples music and couldn't find the song. Thanks for bringing it to us on YouTubes.
all that soul and nuance in that voice of hers. my students would mock mavis and be embarassed among their peers of other ethnicities if i played this in class for them. melting pot society seems to not want to share their backgrounds for fear of being teased. as a result, kids today are so bland and unoriginal.
This woman is EXCELLENT! I remember watching this episode when it aired, didn't recognize that it was Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers. She is clearly the front woman of the group and blessed by God. Whoo!
I remember watching this episode as a kid and being in awe. My mom was crying and rocking like it was Sunday morning. I asked my parents, "Why our choir don't sound like this?" They laughed and said nobody can sang like Mavis.
I love Mavis Staples! Her voice is pure and therapeutic...like joy after pain...like God touched her throat and said "Sing Child" This is one of my favorite performances
