ok, am I the only one who used to find this clip absolutely creepy and disturbing as a kid?? I don't know what it was but it seriously used to scare the shit out of me. It still gives me a weird feeling LOL
I wish people would stop trying to give me fliers and polluting my snail mail box with junk. Not only is it bad for the enviroment, but its more work for me to manage.
I've been looking for this song skit, for I don't know HOW long!!! And I never knew it was called Willie Wimple. How about those red delicious apples!!
Yeah, now I know why the RW picks on Sesame Street. They'd rather pump their children full of religious cartoons. Then they grow up and don't know a darn thing about science, much less corporate pollution!
Hey, cut Willie some slack. Obviously his parents were Leroy and Loretta Lockhorn, and they weren't exactly good role models. We're lucky he didn't wind up as a serial killer.
OMG! So sad! It reminds me of when I used to live near a lake, and it was polluted with garbage, including old tires. I felt so sorry for all those poor fish and water fowl who inhabited in the lake. It makes me wanna cry...
Wow, I am 37 and I finally found this video. I too have been looking for it. All I could remember was the part "If every kid did it, can't you see...etc." I think I remember this coming out in 1974 or 75. It was around the same time the I'm just a bill cartoon came out.
Kids of the old school Sesame Street who watched this probably grew up to be the same ones we meet at the recycling center today. These Willie Wimple segments certainly made me more conscious of things like not polluting!
Wow, that takes me back. I'm 35 now, but I still remember this from my early childhood. For a long while I had wanted to find these clips, but could only remember the theme, not that he was "Willie Wimple", or that it was on Sesame Street. So I searched for "anti-litter PSA cartoon", etc. to no avail. Then the other night I remembered that last line, "what an ugly, messy , no-fun world" etc. and Google took me here. Thanks for posting this! Do you have the other 2 Willie Wimples, by any chance?
this one always bothered me as a child and even today. i wish i never saw this clip in the first place. very disturbing. i get the idea why there were made, but man it scares me.
The only thing on this video clip that scared me when I was very young was when they showed the very messy planet Earth at the end and the chorus said "Yuck." The reason it scared me was because they said "Yuck" a little too loud for me and it was hurting my ears.
the YUCK and paning out to Earth were the only parts that i always remembered. i didn't know anything about the name willie wimple or that were were other cartoons. i do regret searching for this clip again. now it's going to take another 20 years to get the song out of my head. lol
I always remembered the Earth and the "Yuck" parts too. I also remember when I saw this Willie Wimple skit from Plaza Sesamo (Sesame Street in Spanish) on the television, instead of saying "Yuck" at the end, the Spanish speaking chorus people said "Blah."
@afriendofbean They wanted to leave an impression & they certainly did! My siblings & I always laughed at the "yuck". I hate litter & pollution of all kinds!
@SnowbirdFlock I agree, they did leave an impression. Maybe if the chorus said "yuck" a little quieter when I was very young, I probably wouldn't have been scared to watch this skit since they said it too loud and it was hurting my ears. I also hate litter and pollution of all kinds.
These sketches first aired in 1972. Environmentalism was a huge issue in the early 1970s, and the image of the blackened Earth at the end of these skits was no doubt inspired by the first few images of Earth taken from space, which had been revealed to the public just a few years earlier in 1969.
I think boys associated themselves with the "good" kids in this, esp. the one who dives in what he thought was water and almost gets seared on the broken glass and garbages.
That and what a depressing folksy song. Really gets ya. Gets me to this day.
Shit, I wanna kill Willie Whimple still! I'd throw him in the fucking filth he created.
Thanks. But I'm 34, I bounce at a bar and I still won't watch the thing again, Sweetie. Bothered me for weeks. Dunno why. Just did. Maybe it's the liberal in me.
Disturbing but effective? I remember being saddened and angered.
Yeah, I remember getting so bothered by this that I wanted to reach through the TV and beat those kids who were polluting - and i was NOT a violent kid.
Then again, I never littered afterward and always respected the environment. So, I guess it did its job. Thanks for all your honest comments guys.
OMG, this brings back sad memories! I used to be inconsolable after watching this... there's another one too, where Willie Wimple goes a'walkin and destroys the landscape. Very 70s. Reminds me of "The Lorax" too.
It sure is great. I never thought it was scary, just that it sent a very powerful message across to SS viewers. If SS didn't have to compete against Barney and all those ridiculously PC shows, Sesame Street probly would've still been as good as it used 2 b
Thanks for re-posting this! It got pulled months ago. I hate the way segments blend into each other. They started that crap in the early 90's. I miss the days when segments would simply cut into the next one.
