You must use a capture ball to capture an enemy and then release it by holding C button (if I remember correct).

Countering beams increases your own beam size. You counter by using your beam against enemy beam and holding rapidfire or tapping shot fast.

This route is actually the canon route, as in the game's ending, it shows the final boss exploding and the heroes returning to their home planet, and the remains of the final boss are abducted by the Belser Forces. This foreshadows the events of the first Darius. So, chronologically, this game is a prequel to the first Darius.
