He refused to sign because then his name would be associtaed with this bad stigma--as they thought of it at the time--and would affect how his decendants were treated. Obviously we see today the accusers and judges names were tainted through history and the accused are viewed as innocent victims.

I KNOW that this isn't supposed to be funny in context, and, in fact, it isn't, but I remember watching this movie in my English class (we were reading the play), and I actually winced at this bit because of how embarrassingly over-the-top it was.
