Of course there are many great composers but where Dylan is held to be the greatest is the combination between his melodies and the depth and social relevance of his texts. We are speaking of song writers and not those who composed concertos, cantatas or operas which de facto excludes the classical composers you refer to...hymns; now that is an interesting point!

@turockandar I was thinking more along the line of Arias. Anyway, Bon Jovi did a cover of this song once, and he said something similar in the introduction. Something along the lines of this song was written by one of the greatest living song writer America has to offer, and no it's not Axel Rose. I thought that was pretty funny. The GNR version kicks butt though. I say it's one of the few covers that really transforms the song even better, especially for rock fans.
