  • Remember watching with the family on sunday nights, great times. Seeing the abc sunday night movie opening brings back the good ol days.

  • This whole video really brings me back. Thanks for posting.

  • That guy was the narrator for the Superfriends on Saturday morning.

  • TV today is not the same. I don't know what it is.

  • @leafyutube " I don't know what it is ". Most of it is MERDE, DRECK, junk, crap, audiovisual abortions that pass themselves off as " entertainment ".

  • Remember when it took YEARS for a theatrical release movie to be aired on national TV? Looking back, it was so much fun because the entire family, relatives, friends would all gather into one home to watch it. THAT is what we lost with the rise of the digital world!

  • @philaman1972 Boo-hoo.

  • They sure don't say "central and mountain" anymore.

  • HAHA i love Gene Hackman's evil wink, he's such a weirdo!! LOL

  • ...amazing how abc was able to split this up in 2 nights. Commercials meant money back then and still does. The irony of the Atari spot isthat video games and the internet KILLED great programming. The hypocracy of it is that I'm on the internet stating this.

  • In 1982, every little kid in the United States yelled out in unison, "Fuck Code Red! I want to see Superman!!!"

  • So.. how can we make the spirit of the early 80's come back?

  • @krakken242 Vote Republican in 2012. I'm not even joking, either. When you think of the greatness of the '80s, you have to think of Reagan. It's like peanut butter and jelly.

  • @LedWhisky69 different spirit, I'm thinking more of the one that was there before the cold war. think more of mtv before the mid 80's happened. the other polarity if you will, the one with a more positive vibe. but whatever, you were just trolling.

  • @krakken242 The hell I was just trolling. I'm dead serious. The '80s were a very hopeful and happy time and the Reagan administration had a lot to do with it. After the dreadful and miserable years of the previous Carter administration, people were ready to be hopeful again and Reagan led the way. The same is prepared to happen again after the dreadful Obama years. You'll see.

What exactly do you mean by saying "before the Cold War"? The Cold War began in the 1940s.

  • @LedWhisky69 I thought you were just being sarcastic. I wasn't assuming you were a complete idiot/bigot. My bad.

  • @krakken242 I can't tell if that's a genuine apology or if you're seriously calling me an idiot/bigot. Either way, it doesn't matter because I know what I say is correct and bigotry couldn't have less to do with this.

  • @LedWhisky69 anymore than politics have to do with trying to get a certain "positive and creative influence" back in the media. ;)

  • @krakken242 I see, so you were serious about it. Well, then you can kiss my ass because you're obviously incredibly ignorant of sociology and history. I mean, you didn't even know when the Cold War began, so that really says it all. You're a joke.

  • Did anyone really use their Atari to ballance their financial budget? if so, maybe that's really what happened to the economy in the '80s.

  • @MadeFromStarStuff me and my brother laughed at that when it came out.

  • @MadeFromStarStuff Yeah, it boomed, so I guess it worked, huh?

  • i remember that ABC played this on a Sunday night and I had to beg my parents to let me stay up and watch it because it ran past my bedtime. Now I own the DVD...

  • "Sue-perman" This guy had pretty good diction lol

  • I didn't realize how much I missed the 80s until I came across the TV promos for "Superman", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", and just about all my favorite movies from that era. I remember my Ma allowing me to stay up to watch the TV premieres of Superman, and how I was sent to bed early so I couldn't watch Alligator and other scary movies being shown on network TV. I missed when network TV had "premieres" of theatrical movies

  • Wow, I remember this premiered and talking about it in school the next day. It was in two parts. EPIC! ABC was awesome back then, now it's worthless.

  • @cheapcape

I remember the samething. Those were special times. I would love to go back to the 80's for just one day.

  • valerie perrine was such a babe....

  • why does he keep saying souperman

  • OH MY GOD!!! ATARI BLEW UP KRYPTON!!!

  • I wish superman were here today so he could reverse the rotation of the earth so we could go back to the eighties again

  • Holy crap I used to watch Code Red all the time when It aired... In it's original time slot... When I was a young kid. I'm old and gonna go shoot myself now. lol

  • Back then (early 80s) there was no internet, no affordable VCRS, no cell phones and limited social options other than bars and skating rinks so yeah watching TV on Saturday and Sunday nights was like a big deal and almost an event.

  • OMG...is that how advanced we were in 1982?

I totally remember watching this...there were 2 parts and part 1 cut off just before he rescued Lois from the helicopter. Ah well that was before home video.

  • I'm blown away whoever did this. The 80's weren't the best but Television was freaking television and Saturday morning cartoons were the best. I had a Colecovision but I love the Atari commercial...DUDE!!! I was there, I watched this promo, I seen the movie, everything...damn this takes me back. Mega Kudos... This was a time when I was innocent and didn't care about anything, now it's kids and their colleges as well as putting up with there crap. Simpler times....

  • @kpreston69 The 80's were awesome!

  • Thanks for sharing this. If memory serves, this is the exact broadcast I saw "Superman" for the very first time as a kid. The Atari promo is a bonus!!

  • Awsome! I remember watching the broadcast and have not seen the extended scenes since then. The ones I remember are where Lex Luthor tries to stop Superman with bullets, fire, and freezing. Another one is where S tries to intercept one of the missles and it dodges him and Superman has to then chase it. And yet another scene I remember is when Otis feeds an unseen water monster in Lex Luther's lair. There are definitely more scenes that I can't remember.

  • If somebody else has already commented on this I apologize, but what's interesting to me is that none of the promos seem to mention that there is any added footage not seen in the theatrical release. It seems like that would have been a big selling point for ABC in terms of attracting viewers and increasing the ratings.

  • MEANWHILE, AT THE HALL OF JUSTICE..

  • Ah, the days when TV was dignified and cool. Awesome stuff.

  • This presentation came on my 12th birthday (Feb. 7), and I waited for a week for this to show!!! As soon as I found out Superman was going to be on ABC (via TV Guide), I counted the minutes until it would show. Like davideternity99 said, I was surprised that they added scenes (more stuff on Krypton for instance). I think we got a VCR the following year.

  • I really, really miss this period. I would trade everything from 2000 on to go back to then.

  • I remember it was like 12 of us watching a 15 inch tube when this aired, the good ole days of TV when it was worth watching!!

  • Heck. Yes.

  • Between this and the Monday Night Football intros, ABC was on some really cutting-edge stuff in the early 80s.

  • Do announcers still even reference "Central and Mountain time" anymore?

  • Dude I remember sitting in my sister's room watching this tv release of Superman, and seeing that very Atari commercial, and wanting a 2600 like CRAZY. The part I remember the most was at 3:48 with the music notes. You recorded a bit of my memory, well done!

  • i remember this that's when it was real cold and times were so simple? i guess

  • Remember when this was the only way you could get to see your favorite films. I remember when it was a big deal that a James Bond film would be on the Sunday Night Movie.

  • I would have been right... about... 4 back then. Yep, I remember how excited I was!

  • I remember that this was such a huge deal, a huge event, because some people have VCRs, but not all, and we didn't. So something like this was a very big event. You couldn't just run down the block to rent out the film. You waited for YEARS for it to reach TV...and when it did you made sure that nothing else interfered and you were home to watch that incredible movie, otherwise you would miss it and your chance was gone. Period.

  • I recall my dad taking me to the theater to watch Superman when it opened.

  • That's Jack Palance narrating the Atari ad.

  • @ 3:22.. No, that's Asteroids Deluxe. People would often confuse this one for the original and I could never quite figure out why.. short memory I guess.

  • Damn, Margot Kidder was such a fox back then.

  • Ah, THIS is what TV was like back when TV was worth watching! Even the promos were entertaining. Compare this to the worthless garbage on the air today. And the show, "Code Red"! I remember that show! I loved it! Was enen better than "Emergency"! It's such a shame we're so hard-pressed to watch anything worth watching on TV anymore.

  • Thankx. I loved this intro best of all. Takes me back to elementary school!

  • Been reviewing much old footage on youtube. Fantastic to see items, I watched as a kid. I remember watching part 1 of this, on Sunday night. I was disappointed it was a two-parter. I had to go to school the next day and wait for Monday night. But, my disappointment was a hidden blessing.

My buddies and I talked about watching it that night. It was the "talk of the playground", all day long. Time of innocence and childhood, was alive and well then.

  • The funny thing is, I'd rather rewatch this broadcast of the movie (I remember watching this in 1982) than on blu-ray or DVD. More fun. Remember my WHOLE family came over and we watched this. It was broadcast in 2 parts and it had more footage. LOL at the Atari ad. Wanted one so bad. I finally got a console in 83.

  • @DarthDeez

I remember this too. BTW, a year after this, we bought a new TV, a 1982 Zenith on clearance. We still watch that same TV to this day. BTW, I got a Blu-Ray player for Christmas and now I'm the butt of jokes for hooking up a Blu-Ray to a 1982 Zenith. B-)

  • "SYOOP-ERMAN!" This guy was the narrator for "SuperFriends", wasn't he? I can hear him now, "Meanwhile, AT the Hall of Justice..." Great stuff.

  • When they premiere Superman the movie on tv in Philippines back in 1980's on RPN 9. There is no machine gun gantlet on this Philippine premiere. :-( They using film projectors on tv. And back in 1988 they premiere again. But this time on the vhs cassette tape but this time on Saturday night play house also on RPN 9 but the same thing no machine gun gantlet. Do not worry is out on the dvd and blue ray

  • The 80s ROCKED!

  • Y'all sure know what you're talking about!...great time to be alive....wow...when was the last time you heard "central & mountain" time zone phrase? I guess it varies where you're from....everything is usually pacific or eastern time now...that was a good job of editing KLXT77...nice post thx

  • I'll never for get where they cut it for part one. Louis Lane was falling to her death when they froze her in mid air with "To Be Continued Tomorrow Night" Splattered across the screen.

In those days a movie airing on TV was a big deal. Now if there is a movie on TV you like you only have to down load it from the Internet to watch it uncut.

  • Or just get the DVD. back then, a movie on VHS cost about 200-400 dollars. It wasn't until the late 80's that they went down to 25-50 bucks.

  • why did they air it in two parts

  • Because the tv version had about 45 minutes of extra footage. To air it on one night would've taken 4 hours or so. I've been searching for the tv broadcast version for years. I used to have it on vhs, but it has disappeared over the past 25 years.

  • They added cut scenes like the machine gun gantlet, and an extra long version of Krypton's destruction. I remember this because it was the first time I saw Superman The Movie. I was 12 years old.

  • Yes I remember when this aired on national television, we were all suprised at the added scenes and dissapointed that we did'nt own a VCR to record it, so we used my big brothers cassattte recorder and taped as much as we could, only to play it back later that night.

  • @davideternity99 Awesome story.

Back when something like this was really a big deal and just brought everybody together. And talking about it afterwards. Of course a VCR back then was something from space.

Sure all this technology and availability is great, but it sure lacks that 'specialness' in the way you described (and anybody from that era would remember).

  • God Bless the 80's Especially the early 80's

  • @douglascatti

    I'll drink to that!

  • @douglascatti Kids today would never appreciate what we had as a child.

  • @douglascatti AMEN to that.

  • Wow , now this brings back some serious great memories. Sweet early 80's take me away.

  • I remember one of our local Top 40 radio stations at the time used that explosion for their station ID.

  • Being a computer gek I love the Atari ad! Classic! WOW!

  • This very broadcast was the first time I ever saw Superman the Movie...and they chopped it in half right at the helicopter scene. Talk about a cliffhanger.

  • Kids today probably wonder why a tv movie is such a big deal with DVD, Blu- ray, online downloads, movies on demand ect... In those days you either saw the movie in the theater or waited years to see it on tv. I remember being excited for weeks to see Superman at home. (no VCR until 1987)

  • Yeah, I remember being so hyped up whenever one of my favorite films was scheduled for broadcast. I had a tape recorder and recorded the audio from Jaws. I remember occasionally listening to the tapes and being just as excited as when I first saw the movie. This was WAY before I had a VCR! My cousins had Cable. OOOOO! They were BIG SHOTS! LOL! I remember staying at their house one summer and watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind every night for a week! Ah the good old days.

  • I did the same thing. Good times!

  • Right On!

  • OMG! The freakin' abc song came out of my subconcious, havent heard it in ovr 20 years and it came back to me! I DO remember that the tv version was perhaps waaay too long, they probly added at least 40 minutes of additional footage. But it's amazing how you covered all the promos, intros and cool commercials. Wish i HAD a VCR back then, so many memories!

  • Man I missed those logos as of today's logos suck the others were so better.

  • Excellent!!!

    Great memories!!!

  • The anonuncer's voice for Superman, he reminds me of the old Superfriends cartoons! What is his name?

  • William Woodson. He did the Supefriends cartoons from 1976-1984 and he did the opening narration for the Ruby Spears Superman Cartoon in 1988.

  • The first announcer for the Superfriends was actually Ted Knight from the mary Tyler Moore show as well as playing Judge Smeils in Caddyshack.

  • Awesome! I was about 12 years old when this aired. Code Red, Today's FBI and That's Incredible were some of my favorite shows. Atari Systems...I loved the home games and arcade games. Technology has come a long way! Great job! Thanks for the memories!

  • Interesting that it was sponsored by Atari... which, coincidentally, was owned by Warner Communications at this time.

  • I would be born 9mos. after this aired. The three big network "movie nights" remained a staple throughout the decade. I love how they promoted them with this heir of excitement.--and those movie night themes...Jeez! The best things to ever happen to analog television. Classic! The 80's rocked so hard, man! What a great time to grow up. :)

  • I used to love this guy's voice, he did the voice over for the old Justice League cartoon

  • Yo! the justice league was the best thing going on Saturday morning.

  • I Loved it... Especially the Atari Ad... To think how far we have come in the last 25 years...

  • wow, thank you sir, your editing has transported me back in time 27 years

  • Those were the days. If you missed a movie at the theater, you has to wait three of four (in this case) years until it showed up on tv. Now, miss it at the theater, you can own it in three months.

  • for real!

  • Wow, I was a year old when this aired. No conscious memory of it, obviously.

  • It's funny, this premiere was such a big deal that I forever associated the Sunday Night Movie intro with Superman (the color scheme obviously helped).

  • Ted was the announcer in 1973 but Bill took over in 1976.

  • He says "SU-perman" differently. I remember it being "SUperman" (emphasis on first syllable but no pause) on SuperFriends. Or was that Ted's version.

  • Ted said sooperman in the 73 series, Bill Woodson said SUperman. Look for the Ruby Spears version of Superman from 1988.

  • It's Bill Woodson (announcer of the Superfriends Cartoon from 1976-1984) and the Superman cartoon from 1988 on CBS.

  • i remeber watching this when it aired on television for the first time! brings back memories.

  • It's great to see this familiar Atari commercial in context.

  • First off by far the bumper thing with the stars which opened up to the movie presentations was awesome. Awesome way to do their promos with it.

  • What I loved about the network opening theme for their "Nights at the Movies" was that that music was your cue that you better drop everything and get to the TV or you're going to miss the beginning of the flick.

  • The announcer on this promo sounds like the announcer from superfriends.

  • Holy crap!!!! This is good quality for something recorded in the 80's! My folks didn't record much stuff back then, but when they did, it was in EP mode, so it's barely watchable now. That's why everything I record nowadays is in SP mode, better quality and lasts way WAY longer :)

  • I am in shock!!! i remember this opening like it was yesterday!! Thank you for posting!!!

  • I wonder if your recording of Superman has the scene where Superman tries to stop the nuclear missile by flying in front of it to catch it but the missile intelligently flies around him.

  • OMG.......That preview of Code Red with Adam Rich really cracked me up!

  • This must have been a two-parter or they cut a lot out of it.

  • never mind, i see it was a two-parter

  • "Tonight's special presentation of 'Superman' is brought to you by... BOOM!!!!! Atari."

  • The Channel 13 logo in this clip is similar to what WHBQ TV in Memphis used for over a decade during 80s and 90s.

  • This is awesome!!! Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • Your all right, the abc opening is classic, I still have mr.mom and some other movies with the abc promo on tape. We would tape them on vhs and watch them as a family at night. That was when vhs players had a cord attatched with the remote. My dad would sit from the recliner and cut out commercials. I used watch the supermans everyday after school. Yeah, it's all too simple today, just pop on the dvd. It's great but it's not special like it used to be. At least we have the memories.

  • Yeah I remember this when I was only 12, and my sister was 4, the good ole days

  • Those were the good days. KLXT77, were do you get those great intros? Thank you KLXT77

  • Hi optimusjs,

I recorded these when they originally aired (mostly horror and sci-fi stuff), and have been digitizing and archiving them lately. Fortunately, the tapes haven't aged a bit.

  • Back when seeing a hit theatrical movie on TV was a big, big deal. That ABC "Star Tunnel" intro never failed to get me pumped up.

  • lol I love how the women are "Oh My God that's Superman oh my goodness my clothes are falling off oh no!"

  • You said it man! Perfectly, man I really miss those innocent days... what I wouldn't do to feel excited like I used to when I was young. We are too spoiled today, we get everything instantly... You want to watch Superman right now??? Go on Netflix Watch Immediately and in 1 minute you'll be watching it. All the anticipation is gone, my kids don't know what it is to wait either. As soon as we seen Wall-E he wanted me to get it on DVD, lol! He was upset when I told him he has to wait 2 months!

  • also ABC did make it an Event-Richard Donner went and did a special tv cut..very good stuff added in

Now the networks hardly even show films-unless its some Hallmark tv movie.

  • who is that narrating the Atari ad? It sounds like Jack Palance.

  • I was 7 or 8 when this was on tv and it was the greatest thing ever!!!

You hit it right on the mark!

    JB

  • I saw Adam Rich in that Code Red preview, looks to be around his 8 Is Enough years.

  • KLXT77 Is there anyway I could get copies of these Superman movies and some of your others on dvd? I have other ABC movies and specials with commercials to trade if you are interested.

  • I wish I had more, but don't have much of the films themselves, just these promos and opens.

  • "Meanwhile, back at the Hall of Justice"...

  • Yeah, exactly! And you know what I just realized? I don't think it was a coincidence that Bob Woodson did the v/o for the promos. As I stated below, he did the narration for Super Friends, which aired Saturday mornings on...ABC!

  • Sunday Night

Superman the Movie Part 1 on The ABC Sunday Night Movie

    Monday Night

Superman the Movie Part 2 on The ABC Monday Night Movie

  • Thanks for advising of Mr. Woodson. Now I know to listen for his voice on other promos. Was Ernie Anderson off, perchance, given that both were West Coast-based?

  • Interesting possibility. Perhaps Ernie Anderson *was* vacationing at the time, though I'm not sure they'd give him time off during a 'sweeps' month.

  • Or perhaps Mr. Woodson's voice had more of a cadence conducive to "Superman" than Mr. Anderson's? Sounded more like the opening announcer of the 1950's "Adventures of Superman"?

  • No, VHS tape was at a premium back then, so I didn't record much of the film.

  • 1:37 for a split second- COOLEST 13 LOGO EVER.

  • So "Superman" aired Sunday and Monday night?

  • Yes indeed. Long story short...this was the extended 183-minute version that originally aired on ABC in February, 1982. This was derived from an even longer cut prepared for television by the Salkinds in order to charge for every minute of air time. This version is not officially on video, although 8 of the 45 added minutes were incorporated into Richard Donner's 2000 restoration.

  • Niiiiiiice!

  • Sponsored by Atari!

  • Bill Woodson is the voiceover!

  • Mystery solved! Thanks.

It also sounds like Dick Tufeld (of "Lost in Space") on the "Code Red" bumper.

Any idea who does the tags on the first two promos?

  • For what, I ask? Someone who actually worked at ABC and wrote the tags advised that it was East Coast-based Joel Crager who V/O'd most of ABC's movie shows through '83. (And I've heard various "other" samples of Mr. Crager's work.)

  • P.S. 'ruarc2077'.

  • I was thanking 'heine71' for his identification of Bill Woodson. I'm still not sure who voices the tags on those first two "Superman" promos. Joel Crager voices the open itself, but not these promo tags. It's likely an ABC/KABC West Coast announcer, but the voice isn't familiar.

  • And I would appreciate being apprised of what Mr. Woodson did voice on this clip. I seem to recall he was West Coast-based.

ABC's West Coast announcing staff, from what I recall, included Len Beardsley, Mike Laurence and Dean Webber. Possibly Mr. Woodson as well.

  • According to 'heine71', Bill Woodson is the announcer on the first three promos included here.

  • The same person who narrated the later versions of "Super Friends," was it not?

  • as always, great quality

  • It sounds like this was near the end of Joel Crager's long run as "ABC Sunday Night Movie" announcer. But who did the V/O's for the promos at the start of this clip, I ask inquisitively?
