  • Hey Mike, I've been working on this fill for over a month, and for some reason I cant get the part during the 3rd measure. I can get it when its played painfully slow or when it's played half speed like "1+2+3+a4e+a1e+a2+3+4+". Any suggestions for working this speed up? I love your fills, can't wait for your new one, already got your 5/4 Paradiddle down :) Peace!

  • mike, what's the very first fill you play before you go into the groove?

  • that metronome sound makes it SUCH a groove!

  • Mike is a great teacher, thanks! I love getting lessons from The Situation from Jersey Shore. :-)

  • Mike this sounds really similar to the beat you were playing in your Mike Johnston on the news video, is it the same groove?

  • i know you like paiste, but paiste or sabian, anyone?... i need to decide but both sound amazing

  • @chocolatecookie5 sabian.

  • Hey Mike, I'm a beginner drummer and was just wondering what time signature is this in? I've only played in 4/4 and have just started doing a bit of 12/8 pop grooves.

That's all i need bro, your help will be highly appreciated :)

    Peace.

  • @picwent 4/4

  • Hey Mike what are the sizes for your drums?

  • "Paiste" is finnish and means "shine". (yeah maybe a little meaningless)

  • OMG you're like the best drummer ever.. not including Travis Barker. i'm impressed.

  • @liorez travis barker would tell you that your stupid for comparing them... because mike smashes on him so badly.

  • Hey mike, I see that you have a smaller snare attached to your hi hat stand. What is the purpose of that?

  • I went to 100 BPM ! LOL I'm so happy ! Thanks a lot Mike ;)

  • Throw some peppamint to da kids! Mike johnston is dope! And he knows it

  • Any chance you can tell me what reverb u got goin on on the snare? it sounds brilliant bro. It sounds like you got a slight pitch shift happenin on it too. Man ur drumming is so musical, and the lessons gotta be the best. Just subscribed today. Thanks for whatchu do.

  • MORE COWBELL! :D

  • @DrummaAddict i know right??? what drummer does not think that is atleast somewhat cool enough to have to dislike it? i think all of mikes videos are very education for drummers and he always has some sort of cool new technique or fill that can be incorporated into many various styles of drumming.

  • your videos are amazing and that ride looks beautiful!! deffo subscribing xD

  • i really, really like this!! this is so much fun to practice. you are by far one of the coolest, funniest, and grooviest drum teachers out there and i love almost every single one of your videos! i can't wait to get my kit back and start practicing for real =) please, don't ever stop teaching and definitely keep posting more videos!

  • Appreciating that this guy understands learning enough, and is humble enough, to play this stuff over and over and over again for us slower folks to catch on.

  • Wow £20 a month for 40 minute lessons with frankly a beast drummer, Yet i pay £52 a month for a 30 minute lesson with a nobody drummer? WTF? AM I INSANE? MIKE YOUR THE MAN!

  • Thanks this is a great groove, And easy! Sounds great

  • if you don't know how to pronounce the best cymbal companies name then you are not a drummer, (Opinion, not fact).... but it is true.

  • notation made it easier to learn , thanks

  • Lovin that beat it's the simple ones that seem to stand out

  • What hi hat is that ? It sounds sooooooo good :D

  • dude Mike - have you ever considered putting out some kind of album with a couple of other musicians ? maybe something more drum-oriented ? (if you have already - sorry for the ignorance and WHAT IS IT?! koz i want it!) i mean some of your beats are just slammin' dude!! i dont even play drums! im a metal guitarist - so i might be kinda out of place here! but i dont care! i need to listen to you play drums dude! its too inspiring to miss!

so what do you think, brother? how about some kinda album?

  • Mike Johnston's a beast, so it doesn't matter how he pronounces certain words.

  • Hey Mike! What crash and ride are you using!?

    Thanks brotato! Mr. Raz Naz

  • Hey Mike! Dude I can't say enough about your drumming. I'm a beginner(somewhat), but i can still play some beats that are complicated to some intermediate players, I've come a LONG way in the year I've been playing. But watching you, man, is seriously inspirational. great job for motivating me to be the best I can be! You rock and I'm totally subscribing!

  • it actually is PIE-STEE (Paiste)

  • THE MOST BALLIN' DRUMMER OF ALL TIME!

  • You can always use more cowbell!

  • Absolutely great video as always, youre a true inspiration. I was just wondering, whats the pattern in the fill at around 7:39, as it sounds pretty nice? Thanks, and keep up the great work.

  • @Ybis96

    sticking: RKLKRKLKRKLKR

    drums (S = snare, K = kick, H = hi tom, L = low tom): SKHKLKLKLKHKS

played as 32nd notes. pretty damn hard to get those 6 kicks in a row and coordinated cleanly ;p

  • Mike, i just got the 2-4-5-1 maples stick in the mail when i got home from work and was so excited to open it, and i have to say i totally love everything about the stick, thanks for a great stick, i will be buying more soon!!!!!

  • LOL Mike is like "If we had this option, we'd be monsters right now." Mike, trust me you're a monster. Killer lesson as always.

  • The undisputed king of the "less is more" theory of drumming, NO ONE lays down this kind of sick groove with so little to work with. Great stuff

  • Heyy your a great teacher and i was wondering is thier anyway i can get the sheet of the groove so i can practice site reading and playing at the sametime

  • doesnt mike use super 2s on his toms?

  • that snare drum sounds unreal

  • Actualy paiste is a an estonian word witch means shine in case you didn't know! :D

  • i started playing this lick when i was jammin with some friends and my buddy said "waoh what was that?" i said thats a little papamint for the kids! when you start talkin like mike thats a sign you probly watch just a LITTLE too much lol

  • its pronounced paste not piesty!

  • @andrew130794: Unfortunately you have been lied to my friend, lol. The easiest way to find out how a company's name is pronounced is to call them and see how they answer the phone. When they say "Godd morning, Pie-Stee America, how can we help you?" then you say "Thanks, that's all I needed"

    Hope that helps bro,

    Mike Johnston

  • @drumteacher76 Hahaha. Yes, I had this same debate with a friend years ago and I emailed Paiste just to clarify. They said it's pronounced like "FEISTY".

  • LOL I thought at first that Paiste was pronounced "paste" too. I guess that's people's way of determining whether you've been drumming for long or not.

  • @drumteacher76 I didn't know it was pronounced "goDD morning". lol. Just kidding. Keep up the great work and great spirits Mike. Love your vids.

  • @andrew130794 do you really think Mike Johnston doesn't know how to say paste?? dude he's probably endorsed by them...

  • @andrew130794 It's not as if he is sponsored by them eh?

  • Hey mike you should show how you tune your drums cuz I absolutly love the way your drums sound. I would love to have my drumset sound like yours cuz your drums sound amazing.

  • "you could always use more cowbell" xD those little comments Mike always makes are what make the videos fun to watch [other than the actual learning of new techniques] GOD BLESS YA MIKE (:

  • what drum mics do you use? please answer!!

  • yo mike you are my favorite drummer on the entire planet. you really enspired me to become a better drummer. i was wondering how much rudimental time you put into rudimental and bass drum practice when you were younger, or now for that matter, and i was wondering what the age limitations are on your drum camps. thanks

  • Dude i love your grooves. I actually listen to metal/hardcore, but i really enjoy groove stuff. My biggest influence in metal right now is blake richardson, but dude your seriously a grove machine,\\.....freaking love it. What time are your live lessons? Oh and whats your opinion on custom drums. I fee like all your paying for is the name and the brand

  • why do you always take your lessons down? i wanted to check out the video that this one came from and was extremely disappointed to not be able to find it

  • I want to become this good.. although I started play drums at the age of 13 I still might have a chance! I hope ;-)

  • hi mike i love the sound off your snare can you do a video on tunning and mixing on it

  • MORE COW BELL!

  • your videos are the reason i started playing drums, i have spent the past 10 years playing guitar and bass in bands, but recently purchased a gretsch 7 peice kit without coming across your videos 6 monthes ago i would have called it quits on playing music altogether, thank you for inspiring me, i now practice 4 hours a day!

    keep kicking ass

  • It is so inspirational to see this guy being successful...

  • hey mike, for the last 3 sixteenth notes have you ever thought of adding a six stroke roll? i was playing around with this groove today and added the sticking RLLRRL with the singles on the snare and the doubles on the toms. it adds an odd syncopation i think you would appreciate.

  • Is that the DW EQ snare? or whatever its called

  • Love this. Thanks for adding the written music. That helps a lot.

  • any Modern Drummer appearances any time soon????

  • Wassaap Mike,

I'm also a drummer, I have a great interest in cymbals I was wondering where I could buy the 16" Paiste 20 series regular crash & the 10" Paiste 20 series splash?

    Thanks again!

  • Hey Mike, I have been trying to buy some of your Vater 2451s for several weeks and I can't find them anywhere?? Any stores carry them yet?

  • @DoctorWa: You have to ask the store to order them from VATER. The official release date for the sticks is Dec 1st. On that day I will give you guys a link to order them online and have them shipped to your front door :)

    Hope that helps,

  • Thumbs up if he should do a series of lessons for double bass drumming. Not one footed but two.

  • I LOVE THIS. I'm definitely gonna use something like this for the song I'm working on, thank you Mike!

  • Mike!

While watching this video of this tasty groove (oh yeah, it's tasty) I noticed that you aren't using your Mike Johnston signature snare. What happened to that? Oh and I'm liking the sound of that ride. Really awesome video as always! Thanks!

  • MORE COWBELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P

  • @stinkymlinky come on u cnt believe dat....i mean for extreme tempos u jst cnt play with one foot u need the second one also...using double pedals where u cn play with one foot is for kids though

  • i have been following mike for some time...y doesnt he do double bass lessons (with 2 feet ofcourse :D ) you know just something for the metal heads :D

  • @ttanmay because i remember him saying that 'double bass pedals are for kids' and doing double bass with one foot builds your strength loads :D

  • Every drummer on earth should send Mike AT LEAST $20 a month for the LIVE lessons. He's a beast AND he's humble! I bought a ton of his lessons and downloaded them to my iPod and he has made me a MUCH better drummer in waaaaaaaay less time than ANY other person or method. Thank for doing what you do Mike!!! :)

  • What kind of metronome is that???

  • Great lesson! Dope that you added the notes in the buttom of the screen!

  • Love that you put up the sheet! Helps me a ton; hope you're able to continue including the musical notation in your lessons.

  • YES! Something with no fast left hand movements! I swear I'm learning this tomorrow, I've been looking for a good use for my stack. Thanks!

  • Man, I love that Dark Metal Ride. If any single cymbal would convert me to Paiste, it would be that one.

  • i would kill for that drum set! sounds amazing!

  • Thanx for the "pepamint" Mike! I learned it in a few tries, now I'm just trying to move it around hitting whatever is on my way (even people) cause I'm not as cool as you to have a crash on top of a ride =P

  • thanks for putting the "sheet music" there to be seen...that helps me so much.

Also, "we'd be monsters by now!" What??? let me give you a clue...YOU ARE!

  • thanks for putting the "sheet music" there to be seen...that helps me so much.

  • What was that tom fill? That's the PEPAMINT!!!!! Break it down Mike!! Love your vids and congrats to your success!

  • "we'd be monsters right now" - you and benny ARE monsters! :)

  • ah i wana c the crash crosover over fill again

  • mike was that triplets in the first part of the video when you were doing a fill

  • Do you have a teen drum camp? Or do your campers have to be a certain age?

  • This is what I love about this guy. He actually listens to what people are saying, which is why we have an explanation of this fill. Learning something new should be a mutual process between the one giving instruction and the ones receiving it, and Mike's got that down.

I've gotten so much better because of these lessons.

  • im seriously considering joining mikes lessons seeing as my teacher can no longer teach me......sad face........And I really want to continue my drumming :/

  • Thank you so much Mike for putting these free videos on YouTube. I know they probably cost you money in the long run, but they really help us all out. Thanks again, Mike!

  • @DXpac20 Are you kidding? Youtube is Mike's primary source of exposure, as far as I know.

  • Mike and Benny are NOT monsters?

  • Very tempted to take lessons...

  • @earthalien77

You should. I've been playing for over 12 years, but have learned more in the past year and a half with Mike than ever before. It's definitely worth it. Hope to see you in the lessons.

  • Мужик, ты крут, спасибо за урок! :)
